Big & Classic

I don’t really need the TCM Classic Film Festival (4.28 to 5.1) to see venerated older films or wallow around in old-movie sentimentality — I can do that at home. But I am interested in seeing classic movies on big screens with presumably optimum (or at least signficantly better-than-average) projection in the company of large enthusiastic crowds — to me that’s special. So I’m feeling moderately cranked about this festival, which is now in its second year, and which I’m fully press-credentialed and ticketed for.

I have to hit the 7 pm Fast Five screening so I’ll finish this later, but dozens of extremely worthy older films are playing for four days. The question is “how good will they look and sound?”

  3. Guy Hamilton worked on “The Third Man” and “Outcast of the Islands” and directed a bunch of Bonds, including beaucouply awesome

    “Goldfinger” and other genres’ goodies and actioners.

    Worst night of adolescence: teen hormones screaming to see “Goldfinger” and me my pal Jay and his dad Howard got to Fox Theater in Riverside and it was sold out. We had to go see “Mary Poppins” instead.

    Angry ever since.

  5. I’d be more excited about this than Cannes. In fact, if they transplanted this to the south coast of France, it would make the perfect film festival.

    And Gaydos, I share your pain about Goldfinger. However, even though it was Mary Poppins, Julie Andrews was in her beauteous prime. Your teenage hormones should have at least gotten something out of that.

  12. Can’t wait for the weekend, it’s gonna be a great time again.

    There’s nothing BUT new movies playing at the theater. It’s refreshing to have the opportunity to go to this fest with great crowds. I’m sure it’ll be another great experience.
