No Ignoring

Hollywood Life editor-in-chief Bonnie Fuller has written an emotionally effusive girly article about Lady Diana Spencer for CNN.com. I’m not challenging Fuller’s personal observations, but I don’t see how anyone can write about Diana without at least touching on the basic fact that she’s dead, and not from sheer happenstance. A tree didn’t fall on her.

The former Princess of Wales essentially orchestrated her demise due to her atrocious judgment in choosing a profligate immature asshole — Dodi Fayed — as a boyfriend. Fayed was just foolish and insecure enough, jet-setting around with his father’s millions and looking to play the protective stud by saving Diana from the paparazzi, to put her in harm’s way. It came to a head in Paris on the night on 8.31.97. Fayed told his drunken chauffeur to try and outrun a bunch of easily finessable scuzzball photographers on motorcycles, andwe all know the rest.

I was working at People when Diana started seeing Fayed in July 1997. Two or three of us were asked to search around, make some calls and prepare a file on the guy. Within three or four hours I’d learned that Fayed was an irresponsible playboy, didn’t pay his bills on occasion, lacked vision and maturity and basically wasn’t a man. Very bad boyfriend material, in short…and yet Diana overlooked this or didn’t want to know. And that’s why she’s dead. How do you write even briefly about this woman without at least mentioning the tragic turn?

  1. In the world of HE takedown obits, you may have outdone yourself. Now pardon me while I find safe cover from which to watch the fireworks.

  2. I kept waiting for the part where Jeffrey uncovered the treasure chest of rohypnol, child porn, and dead drifters buried in Dodi’s backyard. Didn’t pay his bills on occasion? Are you fucking kidding?

Given Dodi’s and Diana’s mutual crime of enjoying public attention, I consider the judgement of death on them somewhat harsh.

  3. Dodi also brought us F/X 2 and was partly responsible for Hook and Demi Moore’s Scarlet Letter. Gotta give him that.

  4. I didn’t understand it in 1997 and I still don’t understand it, how a planet full of people can mourn the death of a Royal. Or maybe I do understand it and I just don’t care. I only have so much compassion. I’d like use what little I have for the people I love.

  5. So what if Jeff worked at People? Being a writer/journalist is tough. Sometimes, you do what you have to do to pay the bills while keeping an eye out for something better. I know I’ve worked at places I’d rather not have before, simply because that was all that was available. You keep your head down and push through, all the while looking out for something better and more in tune with your sensibilities.

    Seconding the above.

  7. “you worked at People Magazine? That’s just a half-tick away from the tabloids!!!”

Yeah, they probably PAID HIM with MONIES and everything.

    Christ.

  8. They were both immature, and ultimately paid a high price. That’s an accurate capsule summary of what happened. I heard a similar observation from, of all people, my mom. When the news broke, all I remember her saying was “stupid woman”. What she meant was Diana made choices and behaved in such a manner as to cause her own demise. It happens every day to regular folks. It was funny to hear that from my mom, when 99% of the women I knew were sobbing for days.

  9. Also, my best friend from high school still works at People Magazine as a TV critic. It must pay the bills, he’s been there for years.

  10. This is true. My daughter died the same hour as Princess Diana. I will always have that connection but I loved them both before that day. and let’s remember is there anyone on the planet that was more publicly dumped? That can destroy you, too and can result in poor choices being made just to have someone care. She was genuine with not only her children but those she came in contact with – even on the day of her wedding when one of the children fell down – it was Diana who comforted her.

Back off boys – you have no idea at all.

  11. I always felt it a tad hypocritical that the same people who enabled those paparazzi to harass Di by buying those rags suddenly chose that moment to start turning on them.

  12. I’m a wholesome diet regime fan, I am positive the Best Diet Plan is the best, I prefer it really significantly. If you’d like to turn into more slender fine? So hurriedly action!
