Donald Trump‘s response to the White House’s release this morning of Barack Obama‘s live birth certificate was frankly my own: why did they wait so long?
With all the idiots out there claiming President Obama was born in Kenya plus that huge block of Republicans who right now believe the Kenya scenario, what was the upside of not producing this document and putting the issue to bed once and for all?
The certificate was physically obtained in Hawaii at Obama’s personal expense and flown back to Washington, D.C. yesterday.
From the HuffPost‘s Sam Stein: “Last Friday the president himself wrote Loretta J. Fuddy, the director of health at the State of Hawaii, requesting ‘two certified copies of my original certificate of live birth.’ Fuddy complied. Shortly thereafter, the president’s counsel, Judith Corley of the firm Perkins Coie, flew to Hawaii to pick up two copies of the form. The trip was not taxpayer funded but, rather, paid out of the president’s personal account.
“Corley returned on Tuesday at roughly 4 p.m. with the copies. The White House announced a “morning gaggle” for reporters shortly thereafter. One aide explained that they did not want to “hold” on to the documents for release on a later date.”
It’s because it’s answering a “Have you stopped beating your wife yet?” question. There’s nothing important on the long handwritten form that isn’t on certified digital copy. As had been explained at length previously, the COLB is the only legally recognized document. So there’s no legal or rational reason to release it.
The longer the better. I wish he had let the lunatic fringe that has moved to the center of the GOP walk even further out on this limb before sawing it off.
Really Jeff, you think this will “end it”? Do you think the evidence for citizenship that was already released was unconvincing or inadequate?
I’ll tell you why he hasn’t released this before now:
1. These idiots will keep feigning disbelief and moving the goalposts.
2. By caving to these wackos, he’s implicitly acknowledging that the burden of proving citizenship is far, far higher if you’re black and have a funny name. No white president would ever be put through this bullshit.
Until a hot needle is lowered into a dish filled with his own blood, the president will always be suspect to me.

This is not egg on Trump’s face. He’ll take credit for propelling closure on the issue, and throw his next shit out there to see what plays. Trump’s only regret in the whole thing is that no one famous called him a racist, a typical attack against birthers. That was his hope, and would have played right into his wheelhouse to retaliate against.

The President played everybody for fools. Period. Once this became an issue– over TWO years ago, when Hillary Clinton’s staff (NOT the GOP) introduced it– he could have released it then. He chose not to, for whatever reason: it was silly, it was beneath his dignity, what-have-you.
But soon after that choice, the President and/or his advisors must have realized that this sort of thing *could* pay dividends: if enough people, especially on the Right, believe this Birther stuff, then it’s an easy foil to discredit EVERYTHING they believe in, i.e. “See, they’re Birthers, you don’t have to listen to their Medicare proposals or tax reform plans.”
Thus, why release it? The Democrats clearly thought it *helped* them.
Of course, it took Donald Trump all of fifteen minutes to convince a far larger swath of Americans than the Birther fringe that Obama was hiding the birth certificate. Carnival barker he may be, but without Trump’s incessant barking, Obama would have NEVER released the birth certificate, ever, preferring instead to toy with the conspiracy nuts out there.
The biggest loser here, as usual, is the media– the media who ignored this issue for years, eventually believing (or inventing!) excuses for why the President couldn’t release the birth certificate– a COLB was the birth certificate, the COLB was all there was, a COLB was enough, nobody could find the long form, nobody had legal standing to request release of the long form, etc., etc.
It was all bullshit, all bullshit from day one– all the President had to do was release the dang thing, he had that power all along but chose not to do so.
Actually, scratch all that: the biggest loser is LTC Terrence Akin, who got to serve six months in prison because he questioned his Commander-in-Chief. How nice that an issue that could have been made to disappear in a moment wasn’t, and thus resulted in the end of one man’s career.

And his diploma from Columbia does not indicate he graduated with honors, therefore one can infer that Obama had at most a B+ average coming out of undergrad. Why won’t Harvard release any of the law review articles Obama wrote? Why are these being kept under wraps? To serve what possible end?
