I'm saying right now that I'm not especially looking forward to Jean Pierre and Luc Dardenne's The Kid With The Bike, which is playing in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. For one thing I don't like movies about red-haired kids with high-pitched voices who wear red T-shirts. I don't much care for movies about kids, period. I once had a place in my heart for this kind of thing but no longer. Especially with kids like this in the lead. I'm just being honest.

I have news for all young kids dealing with absent or abusive parents. Life is hard so you may as well grim up and deal with it and stop trying to make me empathize with your plight. I can tell you stories about my own messed-up childhood that'll tear your heart out.

Haven't seen the film Jeff but your statement about kids with absent and abusive parents is, frankly, beyond insensitive. I suppose I take this personally given that I am full-time raising a 13-year-old immigrant whose parents are both losers, and whose mother abandoned him at age 11. The last thing you tell a kid in that situation is to "grim up and deal with it.' No need to take more of a kid's innocence away before life does it for you. Telling a kids to deal with it when parents are abusive? They will be for the rest of their lives.

I come from an abusive childhood and somehow I got through it without becoming a druggie or an alcoholic or an abuser myself. My late younger brother didn't fare as well but life has never been a breezy walk in the park for anyone. I'm mainly saying that the trailer and particularly that red-haired kid turned me off and I'm really not looking forward to this film, although I know the Dardennes are master filmmakers and that it'll probably work on its own terms, etc.
