If White Likes It…
In the view of New York Press critic Armond White, Larry Crowne “is the humanist opposite to Hollywood’s self-congratulatory snark. It’s irresistibly friendly, shot in vivid tones by Philippe Rousselot and, most importantly, is non-toxic” — which characterized, White feels, Charlie Wilson’s War, the last costarring vehicle for Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. And then comes a classic Armond White line if I’ve ever heard one: “Larry Crowne‘s lack of cynicism requires an audience that doesn’t hate itself.” Well, that lets me out!
This is the kind of film that appeals to my wife. I cringe everytime I see the trailer. She’s a fan of Julia Roberts, who, in her opinion, is always wonderful. Tom Hanks has done some great work. Even Julia Roberts has made a fewgood films. But … this looks like crap!
You know that’s actually a very good review, and something that kind of makes me want to see it.

This blatantly out-of-touch multimillionaire’s warped fantasy of what a true down-to-earth recession story should look like? This pandering pander-fest from panderville? This?

I am one of the people that Armond White is referencing. I hate myself. I really do. I hate that my name is not Darryl. I hate that I live in a one bedroom apartment with three kids and that there’s not enough room for me to sleep anywhere but on the couch. I hate that I can’t keep a straight face during the Cop ‘N Whore role-playing game my wife. I hate that I go two weeks without drinking anything but Mexican Coke. I hate that I pretend to like the collected works of Borges. I hate that Holocaust movies make me feel good about my life. I hate my car. I hate that I can’t stop at my local gas station without buying a Cherry Slush Puppy and I hate that I make sure to slurp all of it before I get home so that I don’t have to share it with my kids. I hate that I think Savage Steve Holland is doing a really good job with directing episodes of Big Time Rush. I hate any man of comparable age and demographic who makes more money than I do, which is about 90% of them. I hate having to ask my dad for money so that I can pay my kids’ health insurance. I hate my job. I hate that I have monthly cravings for Clifton’s Cafeteria and I hate the way I feel and the things I think when I go to Downtown Los Angeles. I hate Glendale. I hate film scores. I hate my profile and my shadow and the sound of my own voice. I hate that I lie about hating the sound of my own voice. I hate that I lie about almost everything except for the things I should lie about. I hate Armond White.
Two weeks worth of your Mexican Coke budget would easily cover your kids’ health insurance.
Girl I work with knew NOTHING about “Larry Crowne”. She saw the billboard ad. Tom and Julia on a moped.
“That looks cute. I wanna see it.”
That’s who the movie is aimed at.
I almost always refrain from repeating myself on these boards, but I thought I had a pretty good response to this in an earlier thread when I said that:
While Larry Crowne may very well require an audience that doesn’t hate itself, Armond White clearly requires one that does.
Yeah, this flick is definitely not aimed at people see Hanks’ moped, and automatically wonder if it transforms into something “badass” (like a reverse-botox needle for his face).
Slight rewrite: “Larry Crowne” is a movie for people who don’t hate what Mort Sahl calls “1939 America.”
The tragedy of this film is that no one has the smarts or the balls to fix the two things wrong with it. It needed a more defined/developed love story and it needed an actress willing/directed to do a character part.
Fix those two things (easy to do, with the will to do it) and you have a lovely French film that celebrates resilience, hope, life, youth, wisdom, friendship, community and work.
Many, many beautiful small details in this film.
So, in the words of that great baseball legend, “Can’t anybody here play this game???”
So much to say, such heart at work here, so easy to fix, so easy to knock now that it’s widely viewed as wounded prey, it’s my tragic Hollywood Studio development/production story of 2011 (so far).
I have a feeling that for all my pre-release ragging on it, I’m probably going to like this.
NO WAY is it less than a 3-star movie. Isn’t it in 2.35? That’s worth three stars right there?
