Smith Has It, Reynolds Doesn’t

In a piece called “The Movie Star,” Grantland‘s Bill Simmons, the sports guy who writes brilliantly about movies every time he steps up to the Hollywood plate, says there are 24 male movie stars right now. The article is basically a two-parter that compares the careers of Ryan Reynolds vs. Will Smith, and how the latter is perhaps the only real movie star around and why Reynolds, for all his likability, good looks and talent, may never get there.

The Big 24, he says, are “Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Robert Downey, Christian Bale, Tom Hanks, Denzel Washginton, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Russell Crowe, Jeff Bridges, Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Mark Wahlberg, Ben Affleck, Jake Gyllenhall (“It kills me to put him on here, but there’s just no way to avoid it,” Simmmons writes), Justin Timberlake (“…who became a movie star simply by being so famous that he brainwashed us”); and, amazingly, Kevin James.

“All of them can open any movie in their wheelhouse that’s half-decent,” says Simmons. “[And] if it’s a well-reviewed movie, even better.

“Look, I like Jeremy Renner, Josh Brolin, James Franco and Jesse Eisenberg. I really like Paul Rudd. None of them are not movie stars…at least not yet. And neither is Ryan Reynolds. But you knew that already.”

The Smith stuff is great.

“Will Smith [has] no interest in stretching himself, just printing money,” Simmons observes. “After his early alien movies, he spent the next 12 years running the Hollywood equivalent of Dean Smith‘s ‘Four Corners’ offense. He made an “action hero who gets framed and has to spend most of the movie sprinting” choice (Enemy of the State), another wacky science-fiction choice (the excruciating Wild Wild West), a sappy period choice (Legend of Bagger Vance, also excruciating), then a calculated ‘I had to get in incredible shape for this biopicc’ choice (Ali, which should have been great but never got there, although I blame Michael Mann more than Smith). That was followed by Men in Black II and everything else above.

“In [a] 2007 Time magazine feature, Smith freely admitted to studying box office patterns much like Theo Epstein studies XFIP and BABIP, saying that he and business partner James Lassiter got together every Monday morning to look at ‘what happened last weekend, and what are the things that happened the last 10, 20, 30 weekends.’ Later in the feature, he unwittingly describes why the movie industry sucks so much:

“‘Movie stars are made with worldwide box office. You put a movie out in the U.S., and let’s say it breaks even. Then the studio needs you to go around the world and get profit. Being able to get $30 mil in England, 37 in Japan, 15 in Germany is what makes the studio support your movies differently than they support other actors’ movies.’

“Again, totally logical…and totally depressing. Will Smith hasn’t taken a chance since 1993′s Six Degrees of Separation — his first major movie, by the way — and only because it doesn’t make sense for him to take chances. He studied a system that spits out a certain outcome, then rigged his career to benefit from that outcome.”

Here’s what I said in my 3.10.11 riff called “Rich Coward”: “What has Will Smith done since the failure of Seven Pounds? Nothing, which is another way of saying he hid for two years and then boldly reemerged last year by committing to Bad Boys and Men in Black sequels. The man is basically George Lucas, talking a diversionary game about wanting to make non-corporate, content-driven movies while doing nothing except going for the safe ‘brand’ money.”

  1. I’m glad Simmons is at least on your radar — he’s pretty awesome. Pretty excited about his new site, too, although I hope they realize they’ll need to update it a little more frequently to be truly successful.

Klosterman’s actually far-and-away the best writer on that staff, IMHO, but he’s more of a music guy than a movie guy.

  2. I’m neither a lover or a hater of Smith. But implying that playing Muhammad Ali is “not taking a chance” stretches credulity (No matter what you think of the movie). However, I’m a bit of a Michael Mann whore, so maybe I’m wrong. But playing the most charismatic man to ever walk the Earth doesn’t seem all that easy. I also liked Enemy of the State (although I agree most of his perf was about running), and I was stunned by how much I enjoyed I Am Legend. I haven’t liked much else (especially the comedies). However, I do think he can be capable and on occasion a little more than that.

  3. Klosterman’s dissection of the Zeppelin video on that site is genius.

The more intriguing part of the Simmons piece is his observation about Smith’s almost Sabermetric approach to his career. Smith may be the closest thing there is to a modern Irving Thalberg in figuring out exactly what people will pay to see

  4. I feel like that’s a pretty solid list of 24, although I might quibble with a couple of the last “borderline” spots (offhand, I’d rank LaBeouf & Franco ahead of Timberlake…there’s no denying he’s popular, or even an “SNL star,” but a movie star? Hmmm…).

Carell’s the only one I’d throw completely out upon first glance — is this still based primarily on 40 Year Old Virgin?

    Carell over Carrey?!

  5. True, JLC. Cruise used to have that, too, at least for a solid 15 years (incidentally, that’s about where Smith is right now if you count ID4 as his Risky Business).

I wonder if that’s what attracted him to Scientology. Pick apart Cruise’s brain/philosophy, and then bolt for the door when things started get too wackily religious.

If it’s ever revealed that was his actual plan, my respect for him would skyrocket.

  6. Yeah, there’s some odd omissions in that “24,” some of which Simmons at least explains in the article (Willis, Foxx)… but come on: No Nic Cage, no Vince Vaughn, no Matthew McConaughey? All those guys have had hot streaks and can open in a movie in their wheelhouse…

And if you’re gonna rag on Ryan Reynolds so extensively, someone could write a fucking novel out of what, say, Jason Bateman’s deal is–30 movies a year, some hits, some bombs, most of them supporting, some leads, then a zillion cameos and TV spots and shit.

    As for Will Smith:

I think some (ie, all) of you guys downplay or underestimate how awesome it is to MAKE MONEY.

  7. I like Vaughn a lot — undoubtedly more than most here — but I’m going to have to dispute the fact that he can open a movie by himself in 2011. If this was a 2004/2005, I think we give him the benefit of the doubt as a Gyllenhaal-esque entry.

But today? Wasn’t The Dilemma considered a pretty big disappointment? I don’t know; I guess I should really follow the B.O. a little more before weighing in.

  8. I buy it all except for the part about Kevin James being a movie star. No one goes to a movie because it has Kevin James in it.

  9. Weird choices. Bale doesn’t open anything that isn’t Batman. Might as well put Hugh Jackman on there too if you’re going for ‘popular superhero actors’.

Jake Googlehell, really? Prince of Persia was a dud. Source code, love and other drugs, and Brothers all made weak money. I mean, Limitless made more than those three, so why not put Bradley Cooper in there?

How is Timberlake even on the same list as Smith and Cruise when he hasn’t once played a lead in anything?

Weird choices. Might want to pencil in a spot for Daniel Craig, who has three “potential” blockbusters in the can. If Dragon tattoo is a hit, he’s at least as viable for a spot on this list as Bale, no?

At least he acknowledges that Kevin James brings the coin. BLART POWER!

  10. Hate to disagree on this, arch, but Kevin James does open movies. Hitch made people pay attention, Paul Blart is proof, and as bad as Zookeeper looks, it’ll be more proof. (I figure we credit his movies with Sandler to Sandler). And I think The Dilemma not really succeeding says more about Vaughn than James.

I love Bill’s writing. His draft blogs are hilarious.

  11. I love that in Zookeeper, Leslie Bibb and Rosario Dawson are fighting over Kevin James. I desperately want to live in the world where that happens.

Also, is there anything more semi-tiresome than ragging on Jake Gyllenhaal. Guy RULES.

  12. I think its much less than 24 but not confined to just Smith — Depp, Sandler, Pitt, Downey, Cruise, and Galiafanakis can all open and guarantee a solid worldwide gross. And I would add Jolie and Bullock to the list. Di Caprio, Clooney, Damon, and Bale need more support from the director or the material. Washington’s Unstoppable and Crowe’s Robin Hood and Next 3 Days disappointed while Vaughn’s Dilemma didn’t even make prod cost. The other names are a tier below.

  13. Also:

    Avatar: Domestic gross 750 MILLION.

Clash of the Titans: Domestic gross 165 MILLION

Terminator Salvation: Domestic gross 125 MILLION

    WORTHINGTON POWER.

  14. “Depp, Sandler, Pitt, Downey, Cruise, and Galiafanakis can all open and guarantee a solid worldwide gross.”

I think I’d ease back a notch on including Zach Galafiniakis among 20-30-year vets who’ve had dozens of big movies. Why is he in the 24, any more than Bradley Cooper? The guy’s funny, but he’s about ONE YEAR removed from making DTV movies like “Frenemy” and “Operation: Endgame” and bit parts in other people’s movies.

Just odd that Simmons goes into these explanations why Bruce Willis ISN’T a star, but the “wacky guy” from three hits is like some box office LEGEND already.

  15. Yeah that’s pretty weird. Galfiananananakis hasn’t *starred* in anything, he’s been part of a trio and then co-starred with Downey. Bradley Cooper was front and center of Limitless and carried the whole thing, so he seems more worthy of inclusion to me.

And really, why isn’t Shia on this list? Even if you remove Transformers and Indy, Eagle eye and Disturbia were both hits that he carried.

  16. It is interesting to note that while some of these movie stars can act there are many that I would not consider real actors. And some can no longer be considered movie stars even if they can act.

Also of note – with the exception of Christian Bale they are all Americans. I do not take this list too seriously.

  17. True about Galifianakis. And forgot that Dinner for Schmucks didn’t do very well so he can get demoted and join the lower tier.

  18. His choices are a bit of a quibble– we all have our opinions– but overall, that’s a pretty decent list.

What’d I’d like to know is, how come a sports blogger wrote a piece on movies that good?

Can we get more of these pieces here, please?

  19. For better or worse…Keanu Reeves is a movie star that should be included.

Nic Cage. Again, for better or worse, put him in the right vehicle, its a going to be a hit.

And it pains me to say this but Robert Pattinson is a movie star. Water for Elephants made over a hundred million worldwide. Breaking Dawn pt.1 & 2 are going to be huge.

  20. The ‘Nu (I’m trying to coin that as a nickname, come on everybody) is certainly more worthy of a spot on this list than Gyllenhall. He brings in the overseas box office.

Pattinson? Possibly a future contender, but at the moment, he has zero ‘guy’ appeal. Stick him in an action flick and see if he floats. (Jeez, if Abduction makes money, there’s the terrifying prospect of Taylor Lautner being a bona fide star).

  21. The issue with being the type of star that Will Smith is, and MAKING MONEY is that Smith’s inoffensive, pedestrian brand has NO MILEAGE. When you go vanilla for too long, the collaborators stop coming, and the money stops rolling in. Smith has already alienated plenty with his multiple writers on every project, and he rarely ever acts with other “acting heavyweights” – he simply hasn’t diversified to the point where he can survive a few major bombs and return to the top.

Maybe he stays megahuge until he turns 80. But a few more ill-fated God-complex dramas like Seven Pounds, or no-risk timewasters like Men In Black III (which couldn’t possibly cover it’s massive budget) and I doubt Smith will be able to recover.

    Also, dude is BORING.

  22. I love it when straight guys diss Jake Gyllenhaal because he’s incredibly talented and stunning to look at, every straight woman and gay guy is in love with him, and great directors offer him plum roles even though he’s not box office.

Galifianakis is a third banana on an HBO show who also happens to be a third banana in a hit movie franchise.

Excluding Vince Vaughn from this list is insane.

  23. I love it when straight guys diss Jake Gyllenhaal because he’s incredibly talented and stunning to look at, every straight woman and gay guy is in love with him, and great directors offer him plum roles even though he’s not box office.

I’m gay and wish he and his sister leaves the movies altogether.

  24. “Nightmare on My Street” = unofficial NoES4 rap theme POWER.

Gabe — what you say about “Big Willy” may be true. I’ll tell you one thing: he would be crazy to turn down Django Unchained at this stage in his career — that’s exactly what he needs to do to stay relevant.

If I were him, I’d be having my agent calling Quentin 24/7, staking out the New Beverly, keeping tabs on every coke-filled bathroom stall in foot fetish clubs in L.A. — whatever it takes.

  25. Also worth noting: No Harrison Ford?

Yeah, right, Simmons, Justin Timberlake is TOTALLY a “movie star,” but that Ford guy can’t sell a ticket.

Where does a guy like Kurt Russell land? Come to think of it, where the hell has Kurt been for the last half a decade?

  26. LexG is wrong about a dozen times in this thread. Good job, Lexg.

    @rashad

“I’m curious where’s the article about George Clooney’s lack of ability to branch out?”

    In the fiction section.

  27. Is there an age cut-off not stipulated here? Jack Nicholson could still open a film (if he had a film). Same applies to Clint (if he un-retired). Isn’t Liam Neeson a newly christened “movie star” star person?

I call Ryan Gosling earning a slot fairly soon. Daniel Craig sooner. I’d like to see Michael Fassbender and Idris Elba as movie-opening stars, but I don’t see it going that way.

  28. Imagining the Happy Madison pitch meeting for THE ZOOKEEPER: “Okay, it’s a little bit like NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM with zoo animals and a lot like Rob Schneider’s THE ANIMAL, but with Kevin James imitating Schneider imitating animals!”

  29. Buk come on. I like the guy, but his ultra cool suave thing is what he’s been getting by on his whole career. Yeah he’s a little more brooding in The American, or more goofy in Burn After Reading, but it’s the same stuff. I don’t even mind it, but whenever you hear the criticism that guys are “playing themselves” he’s never brought up.

  30. @rashad,

Well, first of all I disagree that he’s been giving the same “ultra suave” performance throughout his career. But aside from that…

I don’t think Clooney is a guy with God-given-Daniel-Day-Lewis type range. He just isn’t. But he does more, acting wise, with what he has than Will Smith ever has. He also chooses better movies to make than Smith does.

  31. By the time MIB III drops, Will Smith will not have been on screen in four years. A lot of these guys take it easy and then put a few together, like Clooney or Pitt. But four years is an amazing break. And I’m sure it’ll open. True star.

  32. Where’s The BEEF? The Beef opens movies.

I agree Liam Neeson is doing better recently than certain names on this list.

Ryan Gosling? I dunno, he’d have to put in some serious time doing a string of blockbusters, and he doesn’t seem interested in that kind of thing.

  33. Don’t get at all how Timberlake deserves to be on the list when he’s barely been in any movies and hasn’t been the lead in anything that has even come out yet.

And Seth Rogen shouldn’t be on the list. For every Knocked Up or Pineapple Express there’s an Observe and Report, Zack and Miri, or Funny People.

And yeah, neither Galifianakis or Gyllenhall should be on the list. Source Code wasn’t a Knowing-sized hit like Summit wanted/marketed it, Love and Other Drugs flopped, Prince of Persia was a dud and a franchise non-starter, the list goes on with him.

  34. Rogen? He means Seth Rogen? WTF?

No fucking way this fat shit is a “movie star.”

Women of all ages love Ryan Reynolds. I like the guy. He is a movie star.

    Simmons should stick to baseball.

  35. Ryan Gosling has Crazy, Stupid Love, Drive and The Ides of March this year. Next year, The Place Beyond the Pines, Gangster Squad and Only God Forgives. Half of those are major studio films, and the other half could get him nominated. I call him being the better “ryan” of a bet.

  36. “I Am Legend, particularly with the alternate ending, is a better performance than Clooney has ever sniffed.”

Oh good grief. Is there a contest going on for stupidest HE comment or something?

  37. One thing that those of you arguing Simmons’ picks and omissions (i.e., Galifianakis vs. Ford) are failing to recognize: he said pretty clearly that the list of qualified “movie stars” is like a yearly All-Star team. Meaning, guys who can carry a non-branded movie (the kind of movie Harrison Ford never makes) to hit status TODAY. Unless there’s a much bigger reception for “Cowboys and Aliens” than I’m expecting, Ford can very easily be described as lower-wattage than Galifianakis.

  38. The timberlake thing is easily explained by Simmons friendship with Seth Meyers and the SNL guys who regularly come on his podcast and wax poetically about how amazing Timberlake is as a host.

I Am Legend being a better performance than Clooney has ever sniffed is ridiculous. Its a fine performance, but nothing special and more importantly Smith brings nothing personal to the table like the majority of his work. He never digs deep and really goes for broke or achieves anything inventive or unexpected, he just hits all his beats.

Simmons is a good writer and a better podcaster/personality, but his taste in movies is extraordinarily suspect. The Goldman line is Goldman being over the top, there is no way by any measurable yardstick post 2010 Smith is bigger movie star than DiCaprio after Leo got two very very different films to huge box office success( I understand Nolan and Scorcese helped but still neither film was easy or mainstream.) It has been noted above but Smith hasn’t made a movie since 08, but you can’t take 4 years off and still be the biggest moviestar in the world, especially if your next two films are threequels to your biggest franchises.

  39. “I Am Legend, particularly with the alternate ending, is a better performance than Clooney has ever sniffed ”

Well, at least you didn’t have much credibility to lose prior to making this statement.

  40. Not only does it effectively use Will’s natural charisma, but his non-verbal acting is something Clooney has never been able to have a grasp of. When he’s killing his dog, or at the end when he looks at the wall of the test subjects and realizes he’s been killing humans all along, it’s heartbreaking, and he is conveying more honesty and emotion than the cold cynical Clooney can imagine

  41. Rashad,

I completely believe that you believe that. I just think you’re dead wrong. Smith is a solid actor but he always, always plays it safe and obvious.

  42. Simmons also keeps championing “The Natural” as the greatest baseball movie ever, which would be true if everybody with good taste started eating horseshit.

  43. I will say this about Smith:

When people say “he plays it safe and obvious” or “he goes through the motions” or “he hits the beats as needed”, what is overlooked is that if simply doing that were simple, everyone could be a big star. Smith is effortless and affecting without being bland or, on the flip side, “showy”, ie “look at me me, I’m ACTING!!” I like Clooney, but I honestly don’t believe he is as good as Smith (as crazy as that sounds). Clooney has definitely taken the more honorable actor’s route with his choice of roles over the years, and that definitely colors the critics view that since he is in smaller, critic baiting movies, that also makes him a better actor, but that simply isn’t true.

Smith needs to challenge himself more, on that, we can all agree on I think.

  44. No Jack? Granted he’s 74, but Matthau and Lemmon were certainly stars in the 1990s, and The Bucket List was a hit.

  45. And by the way, I agree that Smith is underrated as an actor. Six Degrees of Separation and Ali keep getting forgotten (even with an Oscar nomination), so when he turns in a performance like The Pursuit of Happyness it’s hailed as a breakthrough dramatic role.

  46. Will Smith has never done anything on the level of Michael Clayton, Syriana, Three Kings or Solaris. And I am talking about his performances, never mind the fact that he hasn’t even been in a film as good as any one of these. Is he a bigger star than Clooney? Possibly. Is he a better actor? Hell no.

  47. Timberlake is awesome and I’m pretty sure the only way he “brainwashed us” was by being UNGODLY TALENTED, although my favorite things I’ve seen him do were actually in supporting, character actor roles (TSN, BLACK SNAKE MOAN) And the stupid diss on Jake G. is so lame, especially since his filmography is miles better than many on this list. (DONNIE DARKO, MOONLIGHT MILE, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, ZODIAC, SOURCE CODE, LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS, BROTHERS…)

Bradley Cooper makes more sense on the list than Zach G. I think he’s hilarious but he hasn’t headlined anything, whereas Coop just tore though and had a surprise hit with LIMITLESS.

  48. Don’t forget kids’ aversion to what they perceive as “old” people. To wit:

Denzel + Tony Scott + train:

    w/ Travolta (PELHAM): $65 million

w/ Chris Pine (UNSTOPPABLE): $85 million

And Pine is hardly as big a name as Travolta.

  49. No-one’s dissing Googlyeye’s filmography; he has made good films. that’s understood. We’re talking about his alleged ‘star power’ and getting bums on seats, which is not his forte. None of the films mentioned above made even close to $100 million (and most didn’t crack $50), so Bubble Boy just doesn’t belong in the same discussion as Smith and Cruise etc.

  50. I dont know what to say. This blog is fantastic. Thats not really a really huge statement, but its all I could come up with after reading this. You know so much about this subject. So much so that you made me want to learn more about it. Your blog is my stepping stone, my friend. Thanks for the heads up on this subject.
