  1. Aw yeah! This is the genre known as “my kind of movie.” Swami music, metal, aviator shades, surveillance, explosions, choppers, fallen ’80s stars in supporting parts, more explosions, wanton destruction, semi-serious intentions offset by a sadistic thrill-junkie director’s need for speed… Also good to see King Renny back in his “Born American” mode.

I know everybody hates the guy, but there’s one thing at least that he does really well– action amidst the elements. All his movies have that rusty, harsh, metallic bluntness — for a “popcorn” filmmaker, he’s about as glum and exhaust-fumish as old-school J Lee Thompson.

Could be a surprise and actually be pretty good… Unfortunately, that Anchor Bay logo pretty much has it resigned to one week at the Burbank 8 before a quick trek to the Starz channel.

  2. Right sentiment, wrong example.

Harlin directed Ford Fairlane. LIFETIME FUCKING PASS.

    There, that’s more like it.

But for the record, a trip down Harlin Lane:

    Born American: B-minus

    Prison: B

    Elm St 4: A-minus

    Die Hard 2: A-PLUS

Ford Fairlane: A-PLUS times TEN ZILLION

    Cliffhanger: B-plus

    Cutthroat Island: C-plus

  3. Hey, it’s that awesome EWS pervert guy!

LoL, wtf ever happened to Renny? I remember he did that Jackie Brown reunion flick a few years back, then it seems like he disappeared off the face of the planet.

This actually doesn’t look too bad — I’ve been waiting for someone to adapt the SNES classic Urban Strike for the big screen.

Anybody that can name five other non-DTV Dean Cain features without googling has a real problem.

Actually, I’ll even knock that down to two.

  4. Non-DTV/TV Dean Cain, I’ll give it a go!

Okay, Out of Time opposite Denzel, and…

Yeah, fuck it, I can’t think of a second.

  5. I’m betting you probably saw Rat Race. But I’ll be damned if I can remember anything specific about that film, let alone the various walk-ons.

  6. Die Hard 2 is ‘A+’ Lex? Harlin had the award for ‘Maker of Worst Die Hard Sequel Imaginable’ nailed down… until Len Wiseman accomplished the impossible and stole it away from him.

  7. Lex, I thought you hated this sort of cinematography/look?

I thought your thing was 2.35:1 anamorphic Bay sheen.

  8. Born American: nevr seen it…

    Prison: never seen it…

    Elm St 4: D

    Die Hard 2: A-

    Ford Fairlane: B

    Cliffhanger: B+

    Cutthroat Island: C

    Long Kiss Goodnight: A

    Deep Blue Sea: B-

    Driven: D

    Mindhunters: never saw it

Exorcist: The Beginning: never saw it

    The Covenant: never saw it

    The Cleaner: never saw it

    12 Rounds: never saw it

  9. Die Hard 2 is ‘A+’ Lex? Harlin had the award for ‘Maker of Worst Die Hard Sequel Imaginable’ nailed down… until Len Wiseman accomplished the impossible and stole it away from him.

  10. Another two thumbs up for Prison and Ford Fairlane (with Dice Clay uttering the immortal LexG line “My hair!” as he falls from a building). With Rat Race, I remember the scene where the brothers are lifted in the air in their car by a crane or something and the slightly more retarded brother freaks out. That scene was hilarious, as were all the Mr. Bean scenes. Oh and the Hitler scene was pretty great, too.

  11. Am I the only fan of Tamara Davis’s BEST MEN, a dark comedy in which Dean Cain plays pretty decidedly against type?

  12. Nightmare on Elm Street 4–**(1 and 3 are classics, 2 was my first horror movie. The only good thing in 4 was the “wet dream”.)

Ford Fairlane–***(It was funny at the time. I would rather let it live in my memory that way than watch it again and have that memory ruined.)

Die Hard 2–***1/2(“No frequent flyer miles for you!” the last great 80s action movie featured thrills, chills, a plot, a pretty good villain,… edit out the stuff of Bonnie Bedelia and William Atherton on the plane and you’ve got a great movie)

Cliffhanger–***1/2(His other big claim to fame is a terrific movie with big action, beautiful photography, cheerable heroes, and a hissable villain.)

The Long Kiss Goodnight (***) His last good movie has lots of fun Shane Black banter, one of Geena Davis’ best roles, and the ability to make us cheer at lines like “I told you you’d die screaming” as if that wasn’t sadistic or wrong.

Deep Blue Sea (**1/2) the last movie of his that anyone saw is yet ANOTHER people trying to get out of some futuristic set while bad theings chase them, and it ain’t no ALIENS, it ain’t no RESIDENT EVIL, but I suppose it was better than LEVIATHAN. Best remembered for having the greatest Samuel L. Jackson speech scene that wasn’t in a Quntin Tarantino movie.

The movie this reminds me of is Uwe Boll’s Bosnia film with Billy Zane and Edward Furlong, which wasn’t bad, so maybe doing something serious yet kickass will revive Mr. Harlin from the hack-filled slumber he’s been in for so long.

  13. I remember when the whole Scott Peterson deal was happening, my brother said “Bet they get Dean Cain for the Lifetime movie.” Lo and behold…

  14. This is amazing movie! one of the best ! I’m not saying that Renny Harlin’s 5 Days of War (which recently opened in London and non-American Georgia as 5 Days of August) is strongly or somewhat reminiscent of Elie Chouraqu’s Harrison’s Flowers (2000) or Steven Silver’s The Bang-Bang Club, but similarities do seem pronounced.
