Best Picture Spitball

In Contention‘s Guy Lodge believes right now that The Artist, The Descendants, The Ides of March, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, The Tree of Life and War Horse are the most likely 2011 Best Picture nominees. Yes, six.

Nobody knows anything but I say “no” to The Artist (too French) and The Tree of Life (too Malicky). My Best Picture guesstimates: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (highly affecting emotional current), The Descendants (quality death-in-a-family film), The Iron Lady (obligatory British-ruling-class entry), Moneyball (professional baseball meets Social Network-like approach), War Horse (poor sad traumatized horse), We Bought A Zoo (another family film) and possibly The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo…depending how extreme Fincher goes and what kind of a hit it becomes. Yes, seven nominations. Or six.

Having seen Farragut North, I know it’s possible that The Ides of March might qualify, but it’s mainly about a younger opportunist getting punished for being disloyal and I’m not sure how much that will resonate with Academy blue-hairs. I suspect that Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is going to register as too cerebral and subdued and intellectually labrynthian to penetrate as a Best Picture pick. Maybe. I don’t know anything, but I know the Le Carre book and the British miniseries.

  • lens darkly

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy may be or not be a best picture contender but hopefully Gary Oldman finally gets a best actor nod this year.

The Contender, SId and Nancy, State Of Grace, I could go on.

Bottom line: He’s well over due for an oscar.

  • BoulderKid

There’s no way Tree of Life gets nominated. The film is actually more coherent and narrative driven than its given credit for, but the last twenty minutes or so are a lead weight on an otherwise worthwhile film.

I’m not sold on Iron Lady. The director is a major red flag and the film might be seen as being one of those films that’s self-aware of its prestige film status so that many will be quick to dismiss it. Think All The Kings Men, how many people even remember that coming out? The King’s Speech was in this zone for a while before steaming ahead based on strong box office. I don’t really see the masses coming out to see a film about Thatcher in the same way though. Walmart shoppers get World War 2, speech impediments, and royalty. I only see the film catching lightning in a bottle if US conservative talk radio starts drawing Reagan comparisons around the time of the release. What I mean to say is that the film will have to be good on its own and not just a strong performance couched in mediocrity to succeed.

  • Jeff and/or Danny Is Always Wrong

Tree of Life gets nominated. OF COURSE it gets nominated. Even with the weighting, there are still ten slots to fill, and there will be people who choose it. I know I would.

I agree, however; that ending rivaled Return of the King for egregious repetition. We get it, he’s in heaven, stop reminding us already!!

  • Jeffrey Wells

Wells to BoulderKid: Pretty good analysis.

Wells to Jeff and/or Danny Is Always Wrong: There are NOT ten Best Picture slots to fill. Bone up on the new rules. There could be four nominations or six or whatever.

  • Mitchell

I think J. Edgar gets the biopic slot instead of The Iron Lady, and I think The Artist gets in because of it’s cinema-related subject matter.

My longshot pick is 50/50 because it’s gotten tremendous reviews online, plus it has a real sappy storyline.

  • coxcable

You guys still care about Oscars.

    That’s cute.

Has the new issue of Premiere arrived in the mail yet?

  • dharth presley

Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon is THE best thing about Nolan’s BATMAN movies. I think when one sees all 3 movies, the big picture may come across as more Gordon’s story than Bruce Wayne’s. So, yeah – hope TTSS is exceptional, the man’s a steady hitter who honorably worked his way out of Villain Ghetto.

  • Gabe@ThePlaylist

Mamma Mia was one of the most poorly directed studio releases in recent memory. Iron Lady might get some heat for Streep, but that director CANNOT be taken seriously.

I think we’re neglecting any second wind releases that catch on through DVD. Midnight In Paris could be a serious player. And, given the Oscars’ move towards a slightly more populist angle, would it be crazy to see Bridesmaids pop up? Probably not, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that one had a lot of support amongst some in the voting body.

  • BoulderKid

    @Gabe

I think the new system, requiring 5% of voters place a film in the number 1 spot, really hurts something like Midnight in Paris. I haven’t seen it, but even its fans seem to be saying that its not a total slam dunk but more of just a pleasant night at the movies. To get nominated a film really has to strongly resonate with a group of the electorate more strongly than any other film of the year. Its almost better to be a film with a mixed response but strong advocates than an all around agreeable B+/A- film. Its interest to go back to past years when the traditional system was in place and speculate what films were nominated that wouldn’t be nominated if they needed 5% of the first place votes. Frost/Nixon and Ray were two that jumped out at me. Who was really saying those were there favorite film of their respected years? I think Midnight in Paris may be the same way.

  • BobbyLupo

“There could be four nominations or six or whatever. ”

I thought there was still a minimum of five according to the new rules.

  • littlebigman

TREE OF LIFE stands virtually no chance – and the Cannes jinx has sealed its no-Oscar fate.

I agree on Oldman. We had this debate here a few weeks ago when the poster was revealed. he has been nomination snubbed – even worse than award snubbed. He should have won for SID AND NANCY and even IMMORTAL BELOVED.

THE IRON LADY looks like a crashing disappointment. But Meryl is in for sure.

Jeff, I was told by somebody at Sony that you had seen ANONYMOUS and that you had seen STRAW DOGS. Both of these films have been the target of attacks before any person had seen either. Are the below or at or above expectations? What I do hear is that Ifans and Skarsgard and Marsden are good surprises.

  • littlebigman

Oh, and forget MIDNIGHT IN PARIS. Not a chance. The film is a piffle and will be unlikely to get even one first place vote (since Woody refuses to vote). A screenplay nomination is all that she wrote for that one.

And what about DRIVE? Does it stand a chance. From all of Jeff;s praising you’d think it has the golden goose laid and ready to be eaten.

  • Jonathan Spuij

I feel The Iron Lady will get nods across the board for Streep and the techs but little big love aside from perhaps a screenplay nod.

  • DiscoNap

This shit is like watching the Super Bowl to see who wins the MVP. I used to be into it and know it’s a cottage industry, but so fucking tiresome.

  • MrTribeca

Harry Potter will definitely get a Best Picture nom.

WB will launch a huge “it’s the last in the series and didn’t it do well?” campaign and buy it a place.

Worked for Return Of The King. Worked for Toy Story 3.

  • LexG

    On the Road.

  • some_guy

I don’t know about J. Edgar. It sounds pretty nominatable, but I’m starting to wonder if the academy is over Clint. Did a bunch of the real oldsters die? Do they think he’s won enough already? Do people think he’s gotten too pander-y?

  • Alexander

Yes, I can’t help but think that if this were three yeras ago the automatic frontrunner would be J. Edgar. Seems like the Clint ship has sailed.

I honestly can’t think of anything more soul-crushing than Oscar prognostications and/or viewing films, and that of which they are made, including performances, through the prism of what Monique and Ernest Borgnine like.

  • J. Ho

Tree of Life and Midnight In Paris will both be nominated. That much is obvious. Anyone who thinks otherwise is clueless.

The Descendants looks like a dud to be honest and the last Harry Potter film will not get nominated for best picture. That’s not going to happen. Thank god for that.

  • actionman

The ending (last 15 mins or so) of The Tree of Life is NOT an exploration of heaven. Whatsoever.

  • K. Bowen

If you wrote down a description of the end of The Tree of Life, it would sound hokey.

If you watch the film and have a heart, it’s not at all.

  • Rashad

“Worked for Return Of The King”

You mean except for the fact the other two LOTR movies were nominated too?

  • Mr. F.

“Wells to Jeff and/or Danny Is Always Wrong: There are NOT ten Best Picture slots to fill. Bone up on the new rules. There could be four nominations or six or whatever.”

Uh… no. BobbyLupo is correct — while there may be as many as ten nominees (but no more than that)… they can NOT be less than five. Five is the minimum, so there can’t be four or three or whatever. 5-10, depending on the weighting.

And GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO doesn’t stand a chance at a nomination… no matter how good it is.

  • Jonathan Spuij

The comparisons between Potter and either LotR or Toy Story are completely invalid. Just making money isn’t enough. Adding to that the new voting system it doesn’t stand any chance.

  • http://www.incontention.com Kristopher Tapley

I think you might end up with egg on your face with that Artist jab. “Too French” doesn’t really compute here and it’s all set to win audiences on the fest circuit. We’ll see in two months’ time if it’s “too French.”

Why anyone thinks Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will be an Oscar film is beyond me.

  • dino velvet

Sympathy votes for Fincher over last year’s snub?

  • great scott

Fincher wasn’t snubbed last year. He was FUCKED. Tom Hooper? Really? The mind still boggles. Or it would if you were dumb enough to take this shite seriously.

  • BobbyLupo

“The film is a piffle and will be unlikely to get even one first place vote (since Woody refuses to vote).”

Owen Wilson is an Academy member.

  • J. Ho

If it’s good enough, then The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo could be an oscar picture, just like No Country For Old Men and The Departed were.

  • Krillian

Woody’s stuff always gets nominated if it’s good. I’d give Paris the edge over Tree of Life of any movie being nominated that came out in the first six months.

Iron lady has an uphill climb. Unless it’s glowing in the old 80’s ideaology, the Tea Party won’t like it, and as for the other extreme, it probably won’t demonize her enough. And it’s not going to be able to be as convenient with history as the King’s Speech was.

I was going to say I can’t see two Clooney movies getting nominated, but I forget that despite his shaky box-office, Clooney is The alpha male in Hollywood right now.

I think the Academy will be back if J. Edgar delivers. But yeah, first it has to prove it’s not All the King’s Men meets The Good Shepherd.

As for Oldman who languished in the villain ghetto, I like how he managed to get himself into the Harry Potter world and the Dark Knight trilogy, and he’s a good guy in both.

  • Krillian

And the Harry Potter 8 talk for Best Picture nom wouldn’t bug me as much if it was the best one in the franchise, but it isn’t, and none of the previous seven came close to getting nominated.

I’d rather see Captain America get nominated.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is a lock. Stephen Daldry’s been nominated for every movie he’s made.

  • Rashad

I’d watch the Oscars for once just to see Star Spangled Man be performed like it was in the movie.

  • BobbyLupo

It’s funny that every year these conversations start up, and every year people pretend that it’s credible information, and then every Best Picture Oscar goes to a movie that wasn’t in the conversation back in July, and then, next July, they start right up again. I wonder if it’s that the backseat pundits are really *that* far afield, or if they’re actually influencing the race; considering how much of winning Best Picture is just momentum at the end of the race, I wonder if these sorts of articles [not just the articles, the general "buzz" that's starting this early] actually wind up crippling the momentum when it counts. Like cramping up towards the end of a marathon because you used too much energy early on.

BTW, if you don’t understand why ‘Harry Potter’ has a strong shot, you don’t understand how Oscar voting happens. Do you also believe that the Black List of scripts is still 100% genuinely about merit? There are certainly people involved who vote their conscience… presumably. But it’s always been a marketing thing; back when the studios had more control, their employees were ordered to vote certain ways. That sort of thing still goes on. Every producer who works for WB will vote for that for #1 this year. Every actor in the cast will be “encouraged” to do so as well. I don’t want it to, and it may not, but there will be a strong push to get it that nomination, and it’s already looking like a weak year for actual possible nominated movies.

  • http://www.incontention.com Kristopher Tapley

“Or it would if you were dumb enough to take this shite seriously.”

    FTW.

“BTW, if you don’t understand why ‘Harry Potter’ has a strong shot, you don’t understand how Oscar voting happens.”

I don’t think you understand percentages. The rest of that comment is perfectly valid, but it doesn’t single HP out as particularly strong, compared to something like J. Edgar, for instance, which would get a legitimate financial bump from awards attention, a bump HP does not need. If you want to boil it down to dollars and cents (as you should), it boils down further.

  • C.C. Baxter

There is still a requirement of at least five nominees. Anyone who says that there could be four needs to “bone up on the rules.”

    The most likely players?

THE DESCENDANTS feels the most like an Academy picture. Picture, director, actor, and screenplay in the bag.

MONEYBALL deals with an accessible topic in a seemingly cerebral way. Picture, actor, supporting actor, and screenplay seem likely.

THE IDES OF MARCH looks like an old-school, smart political drama for adults. Picture, director, and screenplay. Maybe actor and supporting actor.

    J. EDGAR only needs to not be awful for Clint to get in. Bankable star playing a real guy with personality issues = money in the bank. Picture, director, actor.

YOUNG ADULT. They seem to dig Reitman, and this will be viewed as a meaty departure. Picture, screenplay, actress.

EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE looks like it will push all of the Academy’s sentimental buttons. Picture, screenplay, actor, actress

THE WAR HORSE also looks light the kind of maudlin horseshit the Academy eats with a spoon. Picture, director, screenplay.

CONTAGION is the big, starry, old-fashioned dramatic entertainment that appeals to the elder members of the Academy. Topicality doesn’t hurt. Soderbergh’s impending retirement weighs in his favor. Picture, director, screenplay.

That’s eight best picture nominees. As for the other players:

Got to be content with a Screenplay notice: MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, BEGINNERS, WIN WIN, WE BOUGHT A ZOO, TINKER TAILOR

Acting nods: CARNAGE, THE IRON LADY, ALBERT NOBBS, MY WEEK WITH MARILYN, THE DANGEROUS METHOD, MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE

Techs only: TREE OF LIFE, THE ARTIST, DRAGON TATTOO, TINTIN, HUGO, HARRY POTTER, SUPER 8, HUGO

  • Doug

I will be shocked if “Midnight in Paris” isn’t a best picture nominee. On December 31st it will still be in the top four or five best reviewed movies of the year, and people don’t just like it, they love it.

  • Jack

Jetzt will natuerlich nicht jeder real Frauen ficken.

Network Marketing is a funny industry that’s simultaneously full of almost religious network marketing training dogma, but at the same time – it’s got some of the most brilliant marketing tactics in the entire world of business. When you’re first getting started out in this industry, you could luck out and have a sponsor that knows how to train you in modern day tactics, or you could be sponsored by someone that has never created any kind of real wealth in their entire life.

Many people who begin a network marketing business forget the importance of the word ‘network’. The path to success in this business model is to build a sales organisation and you receive commissions for referring people to the business opportunity. There are different terms for this role but the one that is widely understood is Sponsor. You are sponsoring people into the business opportunity.

Most network marketers quit, except for the leaders, who start looking for additional training and education. Hungry for success, members of the latter group end up easy prey for the current network marketing training scams.

Unfortunately, most MLM companies’ network marketing training programs consist of barely motivational meetings on conference calls. Most mlm companies fail to teach their distributors the basics of marketing and communications skills. This is considered one of the major reasons for the high rate of failure in multi-level marketing programs.

There are many things to take into consideration when trying to find out what is the best network marketing company. While some people may consider their company the best because they have a great pay plan, others might consider theirs the best because their company made the most money last year. Some people might say they have the best MLM company because they have the tastiest products, while others will say that their company is the best, simple because they were told to say that and they are really looking for a mlm business opportunities

lastly The best network marketing company for you is one that has several characteristics. Having said that not all companies in the network marketing industry can be the best. That doesn’t mean the rest are bad. It just means that to be the best for you a network marketing company must have the 4 elements Which I reveal to you.
