I couldn’t remember at first where I’d seen this style of drawing when I first caught sight of this Coen brothers Bluray box set (out on 8.30). It was inspired, I later remembered, by those turn-of-the-19th-century-era or Victorian-era posters for circuses and carnivals (“Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite” and all that) and/or those illustrations that accompanied Monty Python shows and films of the ’70s and ’80s.
Most likely appropriated from an old phrenology chart. Do a Google image on that one and you’ll see what I mean.
Effron beat me to it. I used to own a reprint of a late 19th century phrenology guide which featured this picture on the cover.
It seems insane a From the Mind of the Coen Brothers set doesn’t feature A Serious Man.
And here I always thought it was Raising Arizona that came from the frontal lobe, not Fargo. What a kaputnik.
I believe that this was already put out on DVD, so this is a BD copy.
My early-2000 DVD copy of Being John Malkovich has an insert that uses this same illustration (minus the Coen film-titles, naturally).
There’s definitely a Monty Python bit that looks like that, but presumably, like most of Gilliam’s animation for that show, it’s derived from something else.
Is Sam Raimi ever going to put together all the footage he has on the Coens into a documentary? Been a long time since I’ve heard any updates on that rumored project.
“From The Mind Of The Coen Brothers” reminds me of all those trailers and posters that promise a movie as being “from the mind” of a famous director or writer who actually had next to nothing to do with the movie. Like Lawnmower Man is “from the mind of Stephen King” and somesuch. Strange to see that phrase associated with the actual writers/directors of the movies.
My mind went in the same direction as The Bandsaw Vigilante’s.
