Nature’s Wrath

I regret having missed out on the Washington, D.C./New York City earthquake, and I’m also sorry about missing Hurricane Irene this Sunday. If I was still in Manhattan I would put on a parka that morning and take the A train to Rockaway so I could see the big waves and feel the full force of the winds. I know people whose entire lives are about living in climate-controlled safety vacuums and avoiding the aliveness of nature at all costs.

  1. Count Mike Bloomberg among those who must live in a climate-controlled safety vacuum, as he just announced the shut-down of NYC mass transit starting Saturday at noon. So, no Take-the-A-Train vibe, unless, you know, you’re into drowning.

  2. I was in Manhattan for Hurricane Gloria in 85 …. the street was littered with broken umbrellas and the pigeons were walking sideways because it was too windy to fly

  3. And Travis Bickle smiles. Who knew that 35 years later the scum needing to be washed away would all look like Betsy and Tom.

  4. Bloomberg took a hit during the blizzards (as did numerous inconvenienced city residents) so, while I agree with The Criterion Guy’s ass-essment, I can’t fault him for being overly prudent.

  5. Bloomberg is COVERING his ass. His office caught shit for months for preparing adequately for the big blizzard last winter. No way he’s going to allow that to happen again.

Plus, with a super rainy weekend with high flooding potential, most of the MTA would have been pretty much fucked, anyway, so I don’t think that the call to cut transit starting at noon tomorrow is as radical as some people are making it out to be.

I get what you’re saying, Jeff, but I think that some of this is sensible preparation, too, particularly when dealing with a massive population center that isn’t used to this kind of storm. Rockaway is having mandatory evacuations as of 5pm tomorrow. Hopefully erring on the side of caution, sure, but I don’t think it speaks to people needing to live in climate controlled safety.

Because we don’t know what could happen. The Times blog has laid it out as very possible that this could very easily end up leading to multi-billion dollar damages depending on how it plays out.

  6. As Letterman said, during the earthquake emergency responders did a sweep of his office and found Mayor Bloomberg standing underneath his desk.

  7. I’ve experienced a minor hurricane on the Jersey Shore. The Coast Guard was evacuating and we were leaving our house as about three feet of water was inches from flooding our house. Just the thought of parts of NYC underwater is chilling. I hope the storm loses steam on it’s northward move. Stay safe, all you HE folks in it’s path.

  8. So you’ll cross the street to avoid a hippie, but think it’d be way macho to walk smack into a hurricane. To paraphrase the great Swiftus Lazarus, you really are nuts. N-V-T-S, nuts!

Poser… VOLCANOS, NOW **THAT** SHIT MAKES A MAN FEEL ALIVE.

Better yet, TUESDAY BRUNCH AT WINDOWS ON THE WORLD. You’ve wasted your entire life in climate-controlled safety vacuum avoiding aliveness unless you’ve JUMPED A HUNDRED STORIES SCREAMING ON FIRE!

Bitch Nature can drown a million brown people, but thats the price to pay to GET JEFF’S ROCKS OFF.

Watch out Brooklyn hipstas, WATER!!!!! WEEEEE!!!

  10. Here is to hoping Jeff gets to experience a 9 mag quake in LA, the earth opening up beneath his feet so he can enjoy the “aliveness of nature” first hand…

  11. The thought of mandatory evacuations bother me. The government has way too much power over citizens, especially some chump fascist like Bloomberg calling the shots.

  12. How long is it going to take for NYC to recover? I can only imagine when the power is out and the stores are out of food. Flooded streets and subways. I’m glad I don’t live there.

  13. I live in one of the trouble areas. Next time you hear from me, it will be riding on top of one of these motherfucking storms, punching it in the balls. It’s going to be like Takashi Miike’s “Thor” up in this bitch. BRING THE HURT.

Whats the WiFi like out near the storm surge?

  15. the hurricane will be nothing compared to the tornadoes it shall spawn around Manhattan! Run for your lives – Mayan Doomsday’s PMS starts now

  16. I only found out a half an hour ago Bloomberg was shutting down the MTA starting at noon tomorrow. My boss is currently debating whether she should keep our store open tomorrow. Since it’s in Manhattan and I live in Brooklyn, I really hope she decides not to; I don’t fancy trying to walk home tomorrow if it really does get bad. About the only good thing about that scenario would be the next time someone complained that New Yorkers were pussies when it came to things like this, I could beat the crap out of them.

  17. “The thought of mandatory evacuations bother me. The government has way too much power over citizens”

Legally speaking, they aren’t actually mandatory. What it means, legally, is that the rescue services have no obligation to rescue you and the government doesn’t owe you any money if you’re hurt. (Not sure how it plays out with insurance.)

So it’s actually a question of giving people the choice that you want them to have.

  18. Yes, regarding mandatory evacuations, mandatory is a way of saying if you stay we cannot in any way guarantee rescue during the storm as that would endanger other lives. I know folks who lived on Bolivar Peninsula, Texas, which got the worst of it in terms of storm surge and deaths during IKE, got phone calls telling them that they would die if they didn’t evacuate on the last ferry out. They did and came back to horrendous destruction including loss of lives and property. Tragic, but if you live in an area vulnerable to storm surges, you might as well look at it as a kind of tsunami. At least you have a little more warning.

  19. Its like you read our teacher mind!
