Not So Nutty

Many times I’ve riffed on a dark, delicious fantasy about rounding up Tea Bagger types and sentencing them to green re-education camps for minimum one-year terms. Not to punish per se but to expose these contemptible morons to facts, to truth, to the way things really are and how they’re being played by the rich, and the fact that Boomers have taken almost everything and that diminished lifestyles and economic security are being bequeathed to Genx and GenY for decades to come, and that the best is definitely over. The infra-structure that once provided decent, fair-minded quality of life to middle-class people in this country is disintegrating. The game is rigged. This is the fall of the Roman Empire.

All largely because of impediments to logical, intelligent governing put up by the knee-jerk, mule-like, corporate-kowtowing mentality of Tea-Bagger types and their 60 or so looney-tunes Congresspersons now in office. We’ve truly become a South American society of rightist oligarchs, angry lefties, disillusioned wage-earners, retirement-age fuddies and struggling, debt-smothered have-nots, and the rightist boobs will never understand that they’re primarily the problem. The deficit-reduction deal will almost certainly hurt growth and kill jobs, most analysts are saying. And the radical right will own this when it happens. This level of ideological denial is no longer appalling — it’s become lethal. Ignoramuses can no longer be tolerated. The right is killing this country, things have gotten really crazy, and Obama will never stand up to them.

A second Civil War would be an incredibly destructive thing, but it would feel so good.

This doesn’t naturally follow from the last three graphs, but it applies….

“The Boston Globe ran a chart last Sunday that I’d buy billboard space to reproduce in every decent-size city in America, if I were running the Democratic National Committee,” TheWrap‘s Michael Tomasky wrote on 8.5.

“The premise of it was very simple: It showed how many trillions each president since Ronald Reagan has added to the nation’s debt. The debt was about $1 trillion when Reagan took office, and then: Reagan, $1.9 trillion; George H.W. Bush, $1.5 trillion (in just four years); Bill Clinton, $1.4 trillion; Obama, $2.4 trillion.

“Oh, wait. I skipped someone. George W. Bush ran up $6.4 trillion. That’s nearly half — 44.7 percent — of the $14.3 trillion total. We all know what did it — two massive tax cuts geared toward the rich (along with other similar measures, like slashing the capital gains and inheritance taxes), the off-the-books wars, the unfunded Medicare expansion, and so on.

“But the number is staggering and worth dwelling on. In a history covering 30 years, nearly half the debt was run up in eight. Even the allegedly socialist Obama at his most allegedly wanton doesn’t compare to Dubya; and Obama’s debt numbers, if he’s reelected, will surely not double or even come close as we gambol down Austerity Lane.”

Can’t Obama declare martial law and jail the entire GOP Congess already…? Or is he going to just wag his finger for the rest of the fucking year, but then give in on their next round of demands to destroy Social Security? And will the few remaining supporters then argue that he actually played a brilliant game of “chess”, because the managed to save some crumbs for the poor?

A second Civil War would be an incredibly destructive thing, but it would feel so good.

You admit your enemy is a bunch of crazy, gun toting ideologues, and you want to go to war with them? If there was a second Civil War, you wouldn’t like the outcome.

  • austin111

Watch Bill Maher’s last show??? He’s in favor of a sort of 180 deg version of Tea Partiers called The Donner Party ’cause the only way to beat them down is with an extreme lib version that promises to eat them alive. In other words, the only thing that could defeat them at this point is someone who is even more extreme and crazier than batshit than they appear to be. Give ‘em liberty or give ‘em death indeed! The latter makes the most sense in this case.

Though it’s hard to admit, Obama seems to have turned into a kind of American version of Chamberlain, kowtowing to madmen.

  • Rashad

I don’t know if it’s funny or sad that there are people who still go on about one party being the demise of the country. They’re both corrupt and irresponsible.

  • Kakihara

austin: Actually, a better analogy would be Jimmy Carter vs. Khomeini.

  • Kakihara

Rashad: True, but at least the Dems aren’t acting like economic suicide bombers.

  • Yolanda

I spent 50+ years in the pews listening to black men blame white men for their misfortune. Ain’t no mirrors in church.

All the old people in my neighborhood bitch when their checks are late. Most of them never worked an honest day in their lives.

Every year, I hear more people blame somebody else, more people bitch that the government isn’t fixing their problems, or it’s the white man’s fault, or how some rich people they never met owes them.

They bitch, yet they still take other people’s money.

I only been reading this column for a few months, but its long enough to know you one ignorant old man, Mister Wells.

It’s people like you who are the problem. You’re going to collect that check just the same, and make the rest of the world work their ass off like they owe you, even when America’s broker than shit.

You say America is disintegrating, yet you don’t look in the mirror, you just blame everybody else but yourself. The people trying to stop that, those people are evil, but you a real saint.

I voted for Obama. I was stupid, he was just as lying as all the other slick suits who go into the inner city and sell the bill of goods. “White men will pay to make this town great again, your jobs will come back, you’ll get what you deserve.” No, they won’t, they never do.

He said he was going to cut the spending, that he wasn’t going to do what the last guy did. The last guy who made it all worse, but Obama’s just making it even more worse.

But you say the Tea Party is bad for trying to stop him from doing what Obama swore he’d never do? You believe that, youre the fool who belongs in a “camp.”

When you’re out of money, you don’t spend more money. Hell, only a politician is stupid enough to believe that.

  • sutterkane

If you want people to wake up, the Dem’s should go on strike. If the Tea Party and their ilk are so SURE they’re right that they’ll fly the plane into the mountain out of spite, let them cut welfare, social security, medicare, the epa, planned parenthood, the national endowment for the arts, and NPR. Let ‘em give the money to Exxon and Goldman Sachs and see how many jobs it actually creates. Let them outlaw abortion and put guns in the hands of every American and see how many more people get shot. Let them get government regulation out of the way of business, and see how many more Bernie Madoff’s and Enrons and salmonella deaths we get. And whatever happens, the consequences will be theirs and theirs alone.

The Republicans created this monster by kowtowing the wealthy elite with deregulation and subtle changes to the tax code (cutting the inheritance tax, adding loopholes for corporate jets… I paid more in taxes last year than GE, and I’m 8 times more likely to be audited… that’s not an accident), all of which successfully killed social mobility in this country while taking power and membership away from the unions that used to represent the lower and middle classes and concentrating more and more of the wealth at the top, And they did it by selling it to the American people as trickle down economics and the evils of big government.

I don’t think it ever occurred to them that this generation would actually BELIEVE what they’ve been preaching so fervently. The Reagan-ites and even Dubya’s brand of Conservatives weren’t really true believers. They were doing and saying what they were in exchange for political and financial gain (the democrats, btw, are no different, but they were kowtowing to the unions, but as the unions have declined, they’ve found themselves without a benefactor, and therefore without a political identity. That’s why they appear so spineless). But now the Tea Baggers are true believers in their bullshit. They’ve bridged the gap between political and religious fanaticism and are holding to the “tax cuts = good, social safety net = bad” philosophy as though it were one of the ten commandments. And the republicans can’t do anything about it without exposing their own hypocrisy, and the Dem’s can’t do anything because if they stand up for what used to pass for their convictions, they won’t raise a dime in campaign financing. Why else would Obama extend the bush era taxcuts? Or consent to this bullshit deficit reduction deal when the credit rating was downgraded anyway?

So I say let the inmates run the asylum. Yeah, it’ll run the country into the ground for awhile. But I fear it’s the only way to restore rationality to government.

  • George Prager

“When you’re out of money, you don’t spend more money. Hell, only a politician is stupid enough to believe that.”

Huh? You’re as dumb as a bag of hammers, Yolanda. Businesses go into debt all the time. And If you were broke and unemployed, and needed a new suit and a pair of shoes and a place to live, and food to feed your family, and a car to get you to work when you find work (or to pay for public transportation) and a computer to make and send out a resume, you need to and will go into debt.

  • Kakihara

Yolanda: “But you say the Tea Party is bad for trying to stop him from doing what Obama swore he’d never do?”

I don’t recall Obama swearing he would never raise the debt ceiling. Of course, I do recall Bush saying we’re not a country of nation-builders.

“When you’re out of money, you don’t spend more money.”

Unless you’re a Republican. They liked raising the debt ceiling plenty of times, but when a black Democrat wanted to do it, then they went nuts.

  • Rashad

Kaki: Obama criticized Bush for raising the ceiling and did the same. Hypocrisy isn’t a party issue.

  • Glenn Kenny

First the Boomers suck theme, now the re-education camp idea again. It’s like you’re building a unified field theory of liberal crank.

  • George Prager

I’m picturing Wells, siting on a couch taking generous slugs from a bottle of Jack Daniels, watching a grainy BluRay of a Robert Ryan movie that is not up to speed and typing away, pausing to kick his cat every few minutes.

  • elzilcho

    Prager, hilarious.

  • Luke Y. Thompson

“So I say let the inmates run the asylum. Yeah, it’ll run the country into the ground for awhile. But I fear it’s the only way to restore rationality to government. ”

We tried that in 2000. This is the result.

  • Glenn Kenny

Yep, Prager FTW. See also above, wherein Jeff wants to kick the ass of Gary Tooze, who never did anybody any harm, for not posting a review of the “Big Country” Blu-ray according to his timetable.

  • Kakihara

Rashad: “Obama criticized Bush for raising the ceiling and did the same. Hypocrisy isn’t a party issue. ”

He criticized Bush for raising the debt ceiling without paying for it. Read the actual speech.

I don’t agree with the re-education camp idea BECAUSE IT IS MORALLY REPUGNANT and the mere mention of it is counterproductive.

Yep. Posts like this are more relevant to acts of violence than Palin’s gunsights are.

So I guess we’re just ignoring that Bush’s 6.1 trillion was over 8 years while Obama’s 2.4 trillion was over 2.5.

Yeah, he’s a real penny-pincher. You want a graph that should be made into a billboard?

    Here ya go: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/graphic/2009/03/21/GR2009032100104.html

Bush’s “galactic-sized overspending” put in perspective.

You want another billboard? Done! A graph Obama’s economic team generated in order to sell the stimulus, with the actual results added after the fact: http://blogs.reuters.com/james-pethokoukis/files/2011/06/rbchart.jpg

We literally would have been better off doing nothing then passing the stimulus…

Isn’t the S&P’s downgrade and the drop in global stocks essentially saying “yep, the tea party is correct, the elite is wrong, Uncle Sam is broke and needs to cut spending hardcore.”?

    How is it NOT that?

  • Gary S

The Tea Party are stupid but so is the Government spending apologists. I abhore Bush’s spending but Obama is out of control as well. Moody’s had predicted US debt shock by 2018 and they predicted this a few years ago. The Tea Party is not ruining this Country, out of control Keynsian spending is. Does Greece and Ireland have a tea party? No? Then how did they implode? Europe is smart and finally moving Austerity. Canada did the same thing years ago. Stop blaiming the tea party and start looking at the facts. Also as for the tax cuts….we took in 18.4% of GDP in revenues for 2005, 2006 and 2007 which is higher than the previous 40 year average so stop beating that drum. Tax cuts are not the problem either. I think you need to go to re-education camp and read Nobel Winning Economist FA Hayek.

  • Gary S

By the way those debt charts showing Obama is only responsible for 2.4 trillion in spending have been debunked. You really want people sent to reeducation camps when your own blog is misinformed and childish? Really?

  • Citrus Maximus

It’s the spending…but more importantly, it’s WHAT we’ve been spending the money on.

If we had spent it on modernizing our aging infrastructure (bridges, public transportation, roads, hi-speed rail, SCHOOLS) instead of pissing it away on wars, we’d be in much better shape right now.

The collapse started 40 years ago and really sped up with the election of Reagan.

This country is doomed, and I am actually starting to believe that the inevitable revolution/ Civil War will happen during my lifetime.

  • Kakihara

Farris: “So I guess we’re just ignoring that Bush’s 6.1 trillion was over 8 years while Obama’s 2.4 trillion was over 2.5. ”

You seem to forget that Bush had a surplus.

films: Except S+P also gave strong scores to a lot of bad stocks, so…

“Europe is smart and finally moving Austerity. Canada did the same thing years ago. Stop blaiming the tea party and start looking at the facts. Also as for the tax cuts….”

Perhaps, but they’re not sending people to die in the streets.

“A second Civil War would be an incredibly destructive thing, but it would feel so good.”

military history, strategy and tactics aren’t anything you’re really well read on, are they?

fast wars are usually not very destructive, only prolonged struggles against more or less evenly matched forces.

you are also obviously NOT conversant with the Marine “Rules For Gun Fighting”, by which such an event as you wish for would be played.

since you are already behind at Rule #1, i won’t bother trying to fully educate you, but will hit the high points, just to make the point of how silly your bravado is.

#1. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns. Bring their friends who have guns. (how many friends with guns can you come up with, total? any extra guns to share with like minded folks who aren’t armed? that’s what i thought.)

    2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Your life is expensive.

(hint: Uncle Sam hasn’t been keeping the US ammunition market dry since 2008.)

    extra credit:

If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun and a friend with a long gun.

Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with a “4”.

Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

and the one rule you obviously never learned as a kid: never let your mouth (or your key board) write a check your ass can’t cover.

after all, how many people do you know with family members in the service? who do you think provides the recruits, other liberals? you want a war, you’re going to have to fight it yourself, so bring it on big guy…

  • http://anthroblogogy.blogspot.com/ DirtCrashr

I hear the Left does the whole “camp” thing very well. Although they work mostly on the “concentration” part to help you become a better thinker, but weight loss and a free tattoo are included as perks! Aloha Tinselgrad, how’s Pol-Pot doing for ya?!

“A second Civil War would be an incredibly destructive thing, but it would feel so good.”

I couldn’t agree more as a troglodyte Tea Party member, Jeffrey. But my side would win because WE have the guns and aren’t afraid to use them.

Enjoy your blissfully stupid liberal day.

Re-Education Camps , huhh? Bear in mind that Freedom of Speech is a right under the Constitution. Also at 68, and a Tea Bagger” as you put it, I’m not disposed to have this Soros Puppet in the White House tell me that I’ve got to foot the bill for all the dead beats on welfare nor pay airfare for a bunch of Palestinians and Somalis who will be working at turning “Your McDonaldsville” upside down for allah. You all need to see this for what it is: Look up Agenda21 and Foreign Trade Zones.
