Old Place
Last night I finally visited The Old Place — a McCabe and Mrs. Miller-type tavern in the small hamlet of Cornell, a few miles north of Malibu via Malibu Canyon. John Landis used the Old Place for a locale in Shlock, his early ’70s debut film. TV actor Peter Strauss owns a big ranch across the street from the Old Place. Steve McQueen, Ali McGraw and Sam Peckinpah occasionally hung here in the early ’70s. There’s a biker hangout just down the road called the Rock Store.
So, how was it? What sort of folks hang there on a Saturday night?
The ambiance was all. Food and drink were fine, and none too expensive. What sort of folks? People in their 30s and 40s, mostly. Like any other place.
Peter Strauss was a pretty fine actor in his day. He elevated any project he was associated with, TV or otherwise.
The bartender at the Old Place in Schlock was three time Emmy award winning cinematographer Robert Collins (he was DP on Schlock). He went on to win the Emmy for his camera work on the pilot of Miami Vice.
This place is fantastic. Went here for Valentine’s Day last year. The barkeep said that Bob Dylan used to drunkenly play piano in the corner.
