Drive With Crap Music
There’s no question that the wrong music can diminish or ruin a widely admired film. Drive especially, given the popularity of its soundtrack. But you can ruin any good film with cruddy music. Imagine Robert Wise‘s The Day The Earth Stood Still with a Plan Nine From Outer Space-level score. You could hypothesize in this vein forever.
That’s a little unfair, because you also have to take into account the time period in which the trailer and music were made, and what’s happened since.
In the case of your DAY example — when you listen to it now, after years of aping by lesser sci-fi movies — it indeed sounds a little overused, as if it’s ripping something off. (Ooh… heavy use of a Theremin! How totally unoriginal!) But you have to understand the original context, and history, to realize it wasn’t just another knockoff 50s score like so many others.
More importantly: you can take ANY movie and/or trailer and make it “awful” by using horrible music from the past — because our culture recognizes the inherent awfulness of said music. It depends on our relationship and knowledge of the music. Instead of using “Life is a Highway,” use “Car Wash.” Equally bad. The trailer is supposed to be “good,” so right away there’s a paradox that the music doesn’t seem to relate to the imagery. (Notice that the result doesn’t really work if you pick “bad” music that isn’t well-known. A horrible orchestral score that plays over that trailer? You just shrug and say to yourself “I like the trailer, but that music wasn’t good.” If you even notice the music at all.)
It’s the same reason some directors use unusual song choices, typically “nice” music in scenes that are utterly horrific — Kubrick in CLOCKWORK using Ludwig B. and “Singin’ in the Rain” most obviously, but Tarantino likes to do it as well, among others. It’s two things that clearly DON’T fit together and aren’t supposed to by design. What we see should relate to what we hear and vice versa.
Anyway — I’ve gone rambling.

Somewhere online is the opening sequence from The Social Network with Sorkin’s original song cues, some Elvis Costello song. Would have been a completely different movie w/o the Reznor/Ross score. Even when people don’t notice the score it’s a huge influence on tone and emotional impact whether they realize it or not.
They should call this trailer the Rashad version.
