La Femme Infidele

A couple of months ago In Contention‘s Guy Lodge passed along a kind of consensus view among some London critic friends that Rachel Weisz‘s performance in Terrence DaviesThe Deep Blue Sea “is a career-best, according to trusted sources who have seen it.”

Music Box Films acquired the film for US distribution earlier this month at the Toronto Film Festival, and is presumably intending to put it in theatres before 12.31.11 so that Weisz will qualify for awards action.

Based on the play by Terence Rattigan, Sea is a 1950s-era tale about an affair between a married socialite (Weisz) and an ex-RAF pilot (Tom Hiddleston). Eventually and quite naturally Weisz’s older husband (Simon Russell Beale), a judge, finds out and the shit hits the fan.

  1. Rachel Weisz is uaually terrific, but I thought the reception to this in Venice was mixed to negative? Maybe I’m wrong. My absolute favorite guilty-pleasure Weisz performance is in Runaway Jury.

  2. Raygo, the film was in Toronto, not Venice.

Having now seen it for myself, I can wholeheartedly concur with the buzz I’d already heard. I think the film — exquisite in patches, fussy in others — stops just short of greatness, but Weisz’s performance really is a next-level thing. It’s highly technical, precise work in a stylistic register many actresses wouldn’t cope well with, but at the same time, she’s never been this expressive or impassioned on screen.

She’s right up there with Olivia Colman and Juliette Binoche on my personal Best Actress ballot for the year, and it’d be a shame if the performance slips through the cracks due to landing the wrong distributor.

  3. Has there EVER been a more ludicrous example of Why Didn’t They Just Choose Another Title? Not even the Coens’ re-use of a title from an ICONIC Steve Guttenberg 3D movie is as lazy as calling your movie “Deep Blue Sea”… I get the sense here it’s because it’s a bunch of British assholes who have NO CLUE what a rewatched hipster-douche cult favorite the shark movie is… This is basically like calling some stuffed-ass costume movie “Point Break” or “Roadhouse.”

Unless Weisz is bringing the deepest, bluest, they need to re-title this STAT.

  4. I know nothing of the film itself, but that is a HORRIBLE trailer. Boring, disjointed, tension-free and filled with weak line-readings. Plus – those awful music cues. PBS put better shit together than that back in the ’80s.

And Lex is 100% correct about a name-change.

  5. Yeah, I’m willing to bet there’s a lot of crossover between the Rattigan-Merchant-Ivory crowd and any remaining Renny Harlin fanboys.

  6. The theatre geeks who make up this film’s prime target audience probably wouldn’t hold with the filmmakers changing the title of a Terence Rattigan classic — and it’s surely more important to keep them happy than the Renny Harlin fans who would never bother seeing this anyway.
