“Liberal Plantation”

When Herman “the Hermanator” Cain said two days ago that African-American voters vote overwhelmingly liberal due to “brainwashing and people not being open-minded, pure and simple,” he was stating a basic fact. Substitute “brainwashing” for “cultural conditioning” and he was describing how most of us are shaped by our native cultures, at least in our youth. There are specific reasons for African-American political allegiances that don’t apply to some of us, but we’re all “brought up” to think and vote in a certain way.

I was conditioned to be a liberal because of the left-liberal views of my parents and the left-liberal values of Westfield, New Jersey, and Wilton, Connecticut, where I was living when I figured out what my cutural and political values were. We’re all conditioned to think and assess the world as we were taught by our parents and our extended neighborhood family. It’s a rare bird who goes out into the world and makes his/her fortune and decides to think and vote in a radically different way than what he/she taught in his/her formative years.

That said, the Hermanator is dreaming if he thinks African Americans are going to leave the “liberal plantation,” as MSNBC’s Pat Buchanan crudely put it earlier today.

  1. What’s this? An actual thoughtful political piece at HE?? Am I dreaming?

But seriously Jeff… whatever meds you’re taking, they’re working.

  2. Uh…

I’d say the Grand Old Party has done plenty for several generations of black Americans to feel they don’t have their best interests at heart.

Politics is not religion – many people do in fact go their own way when it comes to it. But Jeff is also speaking from his own generational stand point. The remarkable thing about Obama’s run in ’08 wasn’t that so many voted for him in November (he got 65% of the 18 – 29 group), but that so many voted for him in the primaries which most of which require party affiliation.

For the two generations coming up behind my own, the fastest growing political party is NONE. These are young people who do not take their parent’s party or the opposition. Unfortunately, it means they also rarely vote outside of national or big statewide elections (something Karl Rove & his ilk count on).

If anyone did any “brainwashing” it was Buchanan & Cain’s party and true to form they are trying to duck responsibility.

  3. The problem though is that, no matter how articulately you have described the reality, there are bozos on the very far side of town who will pick up what Cain said

and because a black man said it, Fox et al will seize the phrasing and use it in their sloganeering.

No matter how true what Cain said, it now completely legitimizes the Lemon Tea Party’s (inarticulate) claims and suspicions. I mean, Buchanan is already rolling about in it, as happy as a pig in shit.

“Liberal Plantation.” Christ all-effing-mighty. How loaded is that phrase?

  4. “It was a terrible hour for the relatively few black delegates who were present. Distinguished in their communities, identified with the cause of Republicanism, an extremely unpopular cause among blacks, they had been served notice that the party they had fought for considered them just another bunch of “niggers”. They had no real standing in the convention, no clout. They were unimportant and ignored. One bigot from one of the Deep South states actually threw acid on a black delegate’s suit jacket and burned it. Another one, from the Alabama delegation where I was standing at the time of the Rockefeller speech, turned on me menacingly while I was shouting “C’mon Rocky” as the governor stood his ground. He started up in his seat as if to come after me. His wife grabbed his arm and pulled him back.”

  5. Cain and Jeff are both right. It’s both propaganda brainwashing, and cultural. However it’s also because they know Democrats won’t take away handouts. I know plenty of people who think the government owes them things, so they have no problem using their WIC while they wear Jordan’s or have hdtvs and PS3s. Priorities all out of whack, and their behavior is rarely if ever criticized publicly. It’s just a cycle of nonsense.

  6. “We’ll shoot straight with ya, Jeffrey. Your hits are down. Ad revenues are shaky. We know you love the Oscars, but they’re still several months away and frankly they aren’t generating the kind of traffic we’d like to see. Time to go political. Might be good to throw in the odd ‘Spielberg sucks / Polanski should get the Congressional Medal of Honor’ thread, too.”

  7. CinemaPhreak… you fucking moron… try reading those numbers again for the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Senate Republicans voted 94% IN FAVOR

(Senate Democrats voted 73% in favor….oops!)

House GOP voted 82% IN FAVOR

(House Democrats voted 78% in favor…. uhhh)

Nice try, though….. you made it all the way to the 8th comment before someone finally actually looked it up.

I apologize. Don’t let these silly facts muddy up your argument. (also, Robert Byrd, Democrat, used to be in the KKK! Whadya know!)

  8. “The greatest leaders in fighting for an integrated America in the 20th century were in the Democratic Party. The fact is, it was the liberal wing of the Democratic Party that ended segregation. The fact is that it was Franklin Delano Roosevelt who gave hope to a Nation that was in distress and could have slid into dictatorship. Every Republican has much to learn from studying what the Democrats did right.”

  9. actionlover, that’s horribly disingenuous. At the time, the Republican party’s power base was in the north. you know as well as I do that there was a radical political re-alignment triggered largely by the civil rights issue, causing the Dixiecrats to mostly flee to the Republican Party, while a lot of the Republican Party’s most reasonable people became Democrats. The Republican Party now houses the constituency of racist bigots that used to be owned by the Southern Democrats. Because, you know, while a lot of them did die off, many of them just taught their children to hate, passing it on down the generations. And their children and grandchildren make up a sizable bloc of the GOP.

  10. No, MechShark. What’s “horribly disingenuous”?

    The facts?

Give whatever motivation you want, but the fact is, CinemaPhreak lied, or misled, or just didn’t know what the vote tally was on the VRA of ’65.

I gave the correct tally. Whatever you want to say was the “at the time” motivation fine, but that’s what the numbers where.

Why don’t you call him “horribly disingenuous”?

  11. Sorry, some of us with actual jobs have to do this on the fly and the wording on the site I got the Voting Rights info from was poorly worded.

However, I like how that’s the ONLY thing actionfart zeroed in on. The only thing he refuted.

That, you incredible fucking moron, speaks volumes about you. Something must be cutting close to the bone here.

  12. CinemaPhreak is funny in how stupidly wrong he is. Tell me Mr. Phreak, where is the black community today after decades of voting for Democrats, after decades of living in cities controlled by Democrats? How that having children out of wedlock statistic? How’s that percentage of the prison population statistic? How’s that poverty line statistic? How’s the drug problem statistic?

Of course, any problem in the black community, dopes like Mr. Phreak will say it is the fault of Republicans, even though most black people live in places that have been controlled by Democrats for generations.

See, Liberals have no explanation for why the black family has imploded since LBJ’s great society bullshit. They can’t face up to their own failures, their own racism, and their own condescension when it comes to black people. Liberals think black people are helpless, weak, which is why they need help, handouts, affirmative action. Oh, they’ll say they support those things cause of institutional racism, but there is no institutional racism anymore, at least not the kind they’re describing. No, Liberals just think black people are of a lower class and therefore need the white man’s help. They’ve proven it time and time again, yet have been successful in brainwashing the majority of black people that they are indeed on their side and when Republicans say that people can decide for themselves what’s best, they really mean “fuck all ni**ers!!”

Problem is, like most folks, once black people start making money, they are less and less likely to vote for Democrats, they wise up. Well, Liberals know where their bread is buttered and have an active interest in keeping black people poor and dependent. They’re a vital voting bloc, can’t let a thing like success get in the way of that. You see it in the way they viciously turn on any black person who dares to be anything but a raving Liberal. That is when the Left’s racism truly surfaces. One need look no further than the attacks on Herman Cain by people like DL Hughley, who compare Cain to Uncle Ben, Aunt Jemima, and countless other stereotypes of the steppin-fetchit black man whose only goal in life is to please his white masters. Odd considering the Liberals’ favorite role is that of being black people’s white saviors. Hence the success of crap like The Help amongst self-satisfied white Liberal douchebags, of the kind you find in Hollywood and other moneyed towns.

  13. “there is no institutional racism anymore, at least not the kind they’re describing.”

Here’s the thing… there obviously *is* institutional racism unless you’re going to claim that there’s some kind of racial component that makes black people more likely to be in prison (and that would be actual racism, of course). So, are you saying that Democratic policies are the ones that have led more black people to be in prison? How does that work? You’ve really got to have your pre-decided beliefs (like those Jeff referred to in his other post) and bend all the facts to fit those beliefs to stick to that one.

  14. Of course Democratic policies have led to more black incarceration. Dem policies have destroyed the black family! Look at the black family before LBJ’s growth of the welfare state. The father was usually there, children weren’t born out of wedlock, etc. Now look at the state of the black family. All of it can be directly tied to Democratic policies designed to “help” those in need. Those same policies that destroyed black families are what led more black people to crime and hence, more incarceration.

Tell me where there is still institutional racism. Not anecdotal evidence but real hard facts.

  15. Word, DuluozGray. The first paragraph of your rebuttal to phreak is one of the most incisive I’ve read lately. Actionlover, you already know what you know.

  16. ‘CinemaPhreak is funny in how stupidly wrong he is. Tell me Mr. Phreak, where is the black community today after decades of voting for Democrats, after decades of living in cities controlled by Democrats? ‘

Reallly. Well lets put that to the test. Apparently, under the enlightened administration of George Bush from 2002-2006, when he enjoyed the support of Republican control of House and Senate, isolated utopias like Oklahoma City with its Republican mayor should’ve seen a renaissance in the conditions of minority families. Surely the GOP would be fronting that shit like a ‘nine whenever they trot out their craptastic social theories? No, well draw your own conclusions then.

  17. Silly Dozer — there are indeed minorities in Oklahoma City that do really well. They are the members of the NBA Thunder. (I don’t think there are any other minorities in the state.)

Of course, now that the NBA lockout is in full swing… those poor souls can’t make their millions. Keeping the black man down once again… ONLY IN OBAMA’S AMERICA!

  18. “Sorry, some of us with actual jobs have to do this on the fly and the wording on the site I got the Voting Rights info from was poorly worded.

However, I like how that’s the ONLY thing actionfart zeroed in on. The only thing he refuted.”

Oh dear. I was going to retort… but I think I’ll just let that lay to give everyone an encore look. It sort of retorts itself. Brilliantly.

    “The wording” Okay.

  19. Straw man arguments never seem to go out of style.

Come back when you can actually debate the topic instead of the usual horseshit conservative grab bag of straw men, ad hominem and the such. Unlike the sheltered egos raging above, I’ll own up when I can’t refute your rebuttal.

In case you needed a reminder, the actual subject is that the GOP forever seems to be doing the best it can to drive black voters away.

Or to borrow Buchanan’s metaphor – whenever a non-affluent black person wants to leave said plantation, they”re met with some segment of the GOP reminding them they aren’t welcomed.

  20. Really, CinemaPhreak? I must say I do watch you flailing about.

Own it, dumbshit. I mean, it’s not like you were off a couple of percentage points here and there. You completely lied about a rather important point. And I realize that you’re so busy with your awesome job and jet-set life that you can’t be bothered to fact-check yourself but your attempt at redemption is pathetic.

Let’s recap, shall we? You said that the VRA had 94% Senate and 82% House Republicans voting AGAINST it. (Boooo! Evil Rethuglicans!)

Turns out, a higher percentage of Republicans voted FOR it than Democrats. (OH SHIT!)

That’s not a little boo boo. And pointing it out is not a “straw man argument”.

“Oh, let’s not quibble about who killed who.”

I’m done with you. You are a child.

If you respond to this post it will prove that you are a racist.

  21. Oh CinemaPhreak, the typical Liberal who can only shout “strawman!” anytime you’re faced with an argument you cannot win. Is that really all you have?

Why is it Liberals can’t defend themselves on these simple points? Why is it they can never refute arguments with actual facts? Why do they ignore facts?

I like how it is I who cannot debate the topic, even though I provided facts and links while all you supplied were lies and fantasies.

How does the GOP chase black voters away? Cause they don’t lie to them, like Liberals? Cause they don’t pander, like Liberals? Cause they don’t promise shit they can’t deliver, like Liberals?

Please tell us what Democratic policies are predicated on the fact that black people are just as smart and capable as white people? I’d seriously like to know.

  22. ‘I’m done with you. You are a child.’

Ouch, that’s gonna leave a mark. If CinemaPhreak’s exact reversal of the actual events (freely admiited) can offend a garden-variety GOP-whore like Travis, well, that’s some serious shit. I hope you can sleep tonight, CinemaPhreak. If you can’t, please consider the impact you’re having on a fact-junkie like Dulouz; that’ll put you to sleep right off. Nighty-night.

  23. It’s so shallow and strawmanish to nit-pik my words from earlier.

I’m a very busy man who has a full, active life…. be it driving my Corvette or gallivanting about with the ladies… I can’t really be bothered with running a fine-tooth comb through every tiny detail before I post it.

So, if you want to be an anal-retentive bastard about it I’ll correct it right now.

When I said that President Obama recently set fire to a box of kittens just to hear their cries of terror what I meant to say was President Obama signed an Executive Order on government contracting to fight waste and abuse.

    Whatever.

    Sor-RY. Jeez.

  24. I’m sort of amazed Cain is still associated with the Tea Party, he should be a Libertarian, like Paul. Then the religious zealots could separate into the Sandals party.

I called the contact number and returned it before the 15 day limit, I am not happy and not sure if I will order from this web site again. Handbag outlet will be hard for me to give a recommendation to anyone else.
