I can’t help being impressed by the visual qualities in this video from last night’s tear-gas police attack on Oakland Occupy-ers. It’s all “natural,” so to speak, and it looks like something lighted by Vittorio Storaro in Apocalypse Now. Politically and historically speaking, whatever happened to the basic First Amendment right to peaceably assemble?
The protest aside, Russian Today is such a shit site/station (?). Just look at the related video abotu Gaddafi, and the tone the woman speaks with. Even praising the man, as if he were a righteous leader.

“What’s happened” is that the word “peaceably” is the mother of all loopholes – once the leaders (or annoyed locals) have decided that the protest no longer qualifies as peaceful the cops basically have carte-blanche.
Now, to be fair, I’m SURE plenty of them have been “egging on” blowback from the cops and locals; it’s what happens. But I LOVE the perfect hypocrisy of my country, where the Teabaggers were bringing actual GUNS to their rallies and screaming for literal insurection against a sitting president… BUT they were oldsters and pleasant caucasian country folk and guns are this sacrosanct pioneer honor-culture bullshit thing here so hey, whatever, no harm done. But let a bunch of minorities and poors and young people without suburbanite grooming standards toss some litter and it’s time to break out the nightsticks.

I have not seen any valid reason given as to why the protestors cannot simply re-assemble the next day. The protestors in Tahrir Square refused to leave because the security forces would never let them re-occupy it. But these stateside ones, despite all the rhetoric, are not facing the same opposition. It’s simply a matter of infrastructure – these public spaces are not meant to be used as extended campsites.
