Safe Inside

In a non-video jailhouse interview Bernard Madoff has told GMA’s Barbara Walters that he suffers nightmares and “terrible remorse” for having “ruined his family” but is “happier in prison” than he was on the outside.

“I feel safer here,” said Madoff. “I have people to talk to, no decisions to make. I know I will die in prison. I lived the last 20 years of my life in fear. Now I have no fear because I’m no longer in control.”

Walters explained that “the other prisoners treat him with great respect, especially the young ones, but they do this for all the wrong reasons. But he has a routine, and for the first time in his life he’s not afraid of being arrested.”

Q; What’s the difference between the existence that Madoff has now and the one that Ringo Starr describes in “Octopus’s Garden“? A: Madoff’s is on dry land.

And I dreamed I was dying

And I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly

And looking back down at me

Smiled reassunngly

And I dreamed I was flying

And high up above my eyes could clearly see

The Statue of Liberty

Sailing away to sea

And I dreamed I was flying.

Here’s a thing I wrote in March 2009 about what Madoff could have done before he was pinched.

  1. Consider this some weird disconnect or sign of assholedom in me or whatever, but I don’t really get any Schadenfreude hate-on for a guy like Madoff, nor would/could I bask in seeing him do time… I know Jeff and a lot of the regulars here have this HUGE, borderline irrational hatred for white-collar criminals, as it satsifies some class-hatred wish-fulfillment bone many people have (strangely, usually liberals), but… do you really put a con man who fleeced investors on a par with some low-life murder, rapist, molester… hell, convenience store robber? I mean, who INVESTS money anyway? If you’ve got money, just put that shit right into a WELLS FARGO CHECKING ACCOUNT and count your lucky fucking stars. ANYONE who INVESTS money and certainly anyone who invests in a PONZI scheme gets what’s coming to him…

Bernie is a nice, rich, smart guy with good grammar who didn’t shoot or rape anyone, he’s not a criminal. He shouldn’t be in prison and no one should be CHEERING ON the fact that he is with juvenile “how’s he enjoying his cellmate boyfriend?” gags… He’s a sadsack old man, it’s like cheering on John Mahoney in SAY ANYTHING getting laundry-room’d in the clink– he’s not a REAL CRIMINAL.

If he was a fictional character in a movie, you’d all be rooting for him like fucking DiCaprio in Catch Me if You Can or JOE BRAXTON in Bustin’ Loose.

    FREE MADOFF.

  2. What a wonderful, inspiring end to this riches-to-rags-to-emotional riches story! Bernie has learned what’s important in life, and that is a beautiful thing!

Sad to say I still want to drive a shiv up his ass, but perhaps one day I’ll evolve. If Bernie can, so can I!

(Walters has had duplicates made from her discarded skin, sort of like Blofeld in DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER. She’ll be on TV for another 75 years at least.)

  3. Each of us came to this world at all times good, but, in this society there are too many temptations, and can withstand the temptation of a man of this sub-part,can not withstand the temptation, step wrong, you can not back up .

  4. As we’d say in Ireland, LexG is talking outta his hole, unless of course he is being ironic, as opposed to moronic. Most victims of white collar crime are not greedy investors, rather, they are Joe Schmo’s with pension plans.

In a movie you might root for the Madoff character, like you might root for a gangster or flesh eating serial killer. Doesn’t mean Madoff ain’t getting what he has coming to him.

  5. Lex: “do you really put a con man who fleeced investors on a par with some low-life murder, rapist, molester… hell, convenience store robber? ”

At his level of damage, yes.

Last time I checked, fraud *was* a criminal activity…But even if it wasn’t, he still committed a form of economic terrorism. This went beyond a three-card monty scam he’d get a few days, weeks or months for.

  7. Let me get this straight…

So stealing money that others entrust to you on good faith — including lifetime pensions and savings they’ve worked decades to accumulate — doesn’t make one a criminal? So by that logic, Lex, if some local investment banker cleans out your Wells Fargo checking account you’ll cheer him on?

And “who invests money anyway?’ Do you happen to have a 401k? And children preparing for college that you have set aside and “invested” a small amount of cash to grow for their education funds? Were you planning to retire next year at age 67 and are suddenly bankrupt and have to work until the day you die?

If none of the above apply, then by all means go on and hero worship this slime.

  11. I haven’t seen the film so it was merely a suggestion.i think it was regularly a lot more fun to see than many of the videos i liked were to watch.

  12. If you’d like to buy or rent a forklift truck and are concerned with the risk of non authorised persons making use of it, you can ask the manufacturer to supply you with a unique ignition lock. If you are looking for a warehouse job, for example, you should search for forklift jobs in the employment sections of warehousing, shipping, distribution or large chain store websites. But the fact of the matter is that the cost of these machines is so high that it is beyond the reach of many people, especially small and marginal businessmen. Do you have a Komatsu or a Daewoo Forklift and are you looking out for Komatsu forklift parts or Daewoo forklift parts? Thanks to the internet, you can find reputed forklift spare parts dealers on line. Forklift Driver Career In Philadelphia
