Ratner Pile-On

Journalist Mark Harris has joined Awards Daily’s Sasha Stone in declaring that in the wake of Brett Ratner’s “fags” comment last Friday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences should ask for his resignation as producer of the forthcoming Oscar show.

Gold Derby‘s Tom O’Neil seems to be in the Harris-Stone camp also, as indicated by his soliciting responses for a poll about whether Ratner should be canned.

Update: At 7:20 pm this evening Deadline‘s Mike Fleming reported that “the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will not take action after Brett Ratner made and then apologized for making an insensitive comment during a Q&A for his film Tower Heist. AMPAS president Tom Sherak told Deadline he is standing behind Ratner after the filmmaker apologized for saying that ‘rehearsal is for fags.’ But Sherak made it crystal clear that another indiscreet comment will not be tolerated.”

As the Oscar telecast is “a show that is supposed to represent the best the industry has to offer, there’s not really a long, nuanced debate to be had about this,” Harris writes. “If [Ratner] had used an equivalent racial or religious slur, the discussion would go something like, ‘You’re fired.’ Apology or not. The same rule applies here. You don’t get a mulligan on homophobia. Not in 2011.”

Motion Picture Academy CEO Dawn Hudson faced a similar situation three years ago when, as the head of Film Independent, she was faced with gay community outrage after LA Film Festival director Rich Raddon was revealed to have contributed to the Mormon-led “Proposition Hate” initiative. Raddon submitted his resignation.

The above YouTube clip is an audio capture from Ratner’s appearance on today’s Howard Stern show. He spoke about he loves giving oral sex to women, about the Olivia Munn situation (he denied “banging” her), and spoke about having sex with Lindsay Lohan, and how a lot of his older Hollywood pallies don’t use condoms while sleeping with random women. Here are part 2 and part 3.

Frankly, I’m more offended by his love of cunnilingus than the “fag” remark.

    That shit is nasty.

  • pchu

I am not defending Ratner here, what he said was dumb, irresponsible and hurtful to many people.

But here is my question: what if a guy who everyone admires says the same thing, let’s say David Fincher, and Fincher is producing the upcoming Oscar show and says the same stupid thing and offer the same apology as Ratner, would everyone still call for his resignation?

    Just wondering.

  • berg

the sounds you hear are the butt trumpets of non-Academy members

  • Ray DeRousse

    @ pchu – Interesting idea.

I couldn’t even imagine Fincher saying something that dumb. However, I suspect it would be more destructive to Fincher than it will be to Ratner. Nobody takes Ratner seriously, and these comments by him are the equivalent of a dumb but lovable mutt’s tail swinging around and accidently smashing furniture. The guy might have some sort of borderline mental disorder. Crucifying him for being a stupid pig seems a bit like detonating a nuclear weapon on an anthill because you have ants in your cupboard.

PCHU is right. I’d argue that much of the ‘pile-on’ is people being overly righteous partially because they don’t like Ratner in the first place. If I may, I’m guessing many of the same people who decry Ratner for using an anti-gay slur in a non-sexual orientation context are the first to defend Roman Polanski for raping a young girl. You justify and defend the people you like, while you openly attack those who you don’t like. I’m personally more offended by Ratner’s bashing of the rehearsal process, which is a useful tool that can reap great rewards for other filmmakers. He doesn’t like it? Fine, but no reason to trash those who do.

  • Mike Ock

My favorite part of the Howard Stern interview is when Ratner says before he sleeps with a woman, he sends her to his doctor to get checked for STDs, and only 2 of them ever came back with positive results (Chlamydia and Herpes respectively).

  • Gabe@ThePlaylist

Woah, woah, woah, what’s this anti-cunnelingus talk?

To be honest, though, guys who brag about giving cunnelingus are 95% of the time TERRIBLE at sex. It’s their fail-safe.

  • Alboone

I think this pile-on is less a critique on Ratner than those making it in the first place. For the life of me I can’t understand the hatred geared towards him. Yes he made a stupid comment, but quickly offered an apology. What else do you want him to do? Rip out his spleen!!

I am genuinely curious to understand what did he do to deserve all this ire? So what he’s made some bad movies, but who hasn’t. Kubrick: Eyes Wide Shut; Scorcese: Shutter Island; Spielberg: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The list goes on and on and on. Yes he works in the system. He’s a working director providing jobs for many those in the industry. Are any of you doing that? Seriously this is pathetic. I’m actually in agreement with LexG on this. This is more about the haters than it is about Brett Ratner.

  • Mike Ock

I’ve met Ratner. He’s actually a cool dude.

  • BaxterPeanut

Got a stone-cold lock bet for ya. If Ratner is removed from the Oscar producer role, I guarantee Eddie Murphy WILL NOT BE THE HOST. He’ll walk as sure as Tower Heist is a fuming pile of mung. Money in the bank if you can find someone to take the bet.

  • Joe Gillis

LexG, Mark Harris is a brilliant writer (Pictures at a Revolution will demonstrate that). You just don’t like him because he never publishes articles about how hot Kristen Stewart is, how awesome it is to go down on women, or any of those other lame douchey things that you admire about losers like Ratner. Yeah, I said it: Ratner is a loser. And he doesn’t get a free pass for using a word that he should know by now is hurtful and offensive to a ton of people.

  • LexG

“Mark Harris is a BRILLIANT WRITER”?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA That is the funniest thing I will hear all week… Gee, what’s more brilliant, his obvious DOGSHIT BREATH, his fake tan, or his 200 articles with variations on “WOMEN ARE 50% OF THE POPULATION, HOLLYWOOD!” What a CLICHED DOUCHE, what a walking stereotype, what a one-note HACK…. He sucks.

A lot of people like Lars but he got the boot from Cannes regardless. It should be a matter of principle not popularity.

I’m sorry but if this fat prick made a derogatory remark about the Jewish community, it would have been a wrap. A motherfucking wrap.

  • Mark

“To be honest, though, guys who brag about giving cunnelingus are 95% of the time TERRIBLE at sex.”

That’s like saying guys who brag about being good at golf are usually terrible cooks. Just different things, done with different intentions, related only in that sometimes one follows the other.

  • tpk123

Did Sasha Stone declare it or did Ryan Adams?

  • Snoop Marlo

A buddy of mine knew Ratner many years ago when they were both teens in Miami Beach. Ratner would mooch food out of my friend’s refrigerator. Said he was a major putz too.

Still seems like a putz to me.

  • DiscoNap

If Brett Ratner looked like Dan Franco there would be no issue. He’s a douche, no doubt, but it always seems like the mortal types catch so much more shit.

Also the world probably does need to be phased out of parlance, but if you think “rehearsal is for fags” is the homophobia we’re still fighting against in the country, you’re really denigrating that fight.

Lars is a different casse though. LVT is a polarizing figure among the media, and he has said outrageous things before the ‘Nazi’ thing. And many people in the media defended him after he got booted out of Cannes.

And I don’t know anyone who likes Ratner and this feels like a pile-on. Again I am not defending what he said, because it’s stupid and thoughtless. But the reaction from bloggers/critics is a little too much.

BTW, I think Cannes over reacted on Lars.

Well, you know what they say about ASSumptions.

I’m not American and don’t speak English well, but it seems to me that the people that get most upset by politically incorrect language are, for example, the type of people who agree with something like occupy wall street, but would never get off their asses to go down there. Complaining about someone’s speech is an easy way to get left wing credibility without having to actually, you know, go out to a street.

  • Redbeard

    ” what a walking stereotype, what a one-note HACK…. He sucks.”

    Coming from…. Lex.

    Ah, irony.

  • Joe Gillis

    “What a one note hack.”

Lex, if you refuse to acknowledge the fact that Hollywood under represents women, then what kind of adolescent macho fantasy world do you live in? Even with Kathryn Bigelow getting an Oscar, women still are rarely given the power and freedom that douches like Ratner have. Credit to Mark Harris for actually mentioning this, even if he does beat the drum often.

Also, have you even READ Pictures at a Revolution? I’d like to see YOU write something that thorough and well thought out someday

This has absolutely nothing to do with politically correct language. I am so sick of people using the “political correct” tag do dismiss legitimate claims. This is simply a matter of professionalism. I don’t give a shit if the guy is a homophobe in real life. It is his life so he can do whatever the fudge he wants. However, when you are representing a brand in a public arena, a brand supported by a diverse group of people, you should be professional.

No one in a customer service job is going to yell “fag” or “nigger” at a customer. Why? because they are representing a brand, a brand sustained by customers who are both gay, black and a whole lot of other things. So please enough with this. If you act unprofessional, you should pay the price. It’s as simple as that.

    P.S

    Your English is perfect.

I want to address the women in Hollywood comment because for the most part it infuriates me and is completely outdated in an age with incredibly cheap HD equipment and sub thousand dollar editing systems.

You know why there are less women in filmmaking and there aren’t as many female protagonists in movies: There 2-3 times(if not more) as many men writing, directing, editing and DPing. That’s it. Spend some time amidst a group of artists/actor/writer types especially on webseries or no budget indies or shorts. Women on the whole, prefer acting and maybe writing and rarely are willing to spend their own money to produce and almost never DP or direct. This pt does not in any imply they aren’t as capable or as talented, just there are not nearly as many of them that want to and until women close the gap on budgeting, DP/Grip and editing(ie the jobs that don’t get the fanfare, they won’t ever be even.

If you want your voice to be heard as a woman and actress. Write something. Direct it. Find a DP. Teach yourself to edit and put it out there. You have a shot in the current media age. I have lots of female friends doing this and I respect them immensely for it. I also have a lot of actress friends who whine about it all being unfair blah blah blah and refusing to write or teach themselves any other useful film industry skill. The worst ones can’t even bother to keep themselves in shape and get pissed because people expect them to look good in a field where attractiveness is absolutely integral.

This Ratner thing is still silly, I mean the former Defensive Coordinator has literally been rapping teen boys at Penn State for 20 yrss and it was covered up by the winningest coach in D1 history. Ratner didn’t even direct the F word at a homosexual. He is just a bad director who happens to also be a douchebag, we’ve known this for years.

No. But what’s my race got to do with anything?

  • Kakihara

Hey, who took down my link in which Ratner admitted he got fellated by a dude?

  • clockwork taxi

Eating my lunch and reading the comments, nearly spit my food at my monitior when I read, “Mark Harris is a good writer.” He’s awful. The WORST. His topics wouldn’t be fit for AOL chat rooms. “The ending of season 1 of The Killing wasn’t fair!” “Mel Gibson is mean!” “Gays CAN play straights!” Propbably the only page I don’t read in EW.

  • Joe Gillis

    Clockwork taxi, your loss.

  • charlesjmm

Brett Ratner crying about movies not making enough money….waaaah. Well, if they keep hiring directors like him there’s no point in paying to see movies- all he cares about is money. He actually thought his X-men movie was the best and tweeted the gross boxoffice earnings on his twitter…as if it making money somehow saved it from fucking sucking! (Not to mention it was on the coattails of Bryan Singer’s work).
