“You’re No Jerry Bruckheimer”

FBI agent Gregg Schwarz‘s belief that former FBI director J. Edgar Hoover was utterly straight “is based on the notion that Hoover condemned extra-marital affairs and anyone who was homosexual was considered a “security risk,” writes Time‘s Melissa Locker.

Neither Clint Eastwood nor Dustin Lance Black “were told there was no evidence whatsoever that Mr. Hoover was homosexual,” Schwarz says in the video. “They took the historical facts, twisted them to their own personal agenda, which is purely profit and sensationalism, and now it ls out there…for you to evaluate. It’s a smear campaign.”

Schwarz to Eastwood: “You’re no Jerry Bruckheimer.” Insult?

“For Schwarz, there is no way a man who condemns homosexuality could possibly be gay,” Locker writes. “Apparently he has chosen to ignore the many former Congressmen and religious leaders who put the lie to that belief, and is also completely unaware of the human capacity to protest too much.”

How can you smear Hoover? He’s already so filthy from COINTELPRO and the Palmer raids that he has very little dignity left to tarnish.

  • LexG

This guy is a barrel of laughs, eh? Guy makes your average movie blogger roundtable look like the height of showmanship.

If anyone’s on the fence about watching the vid, I HIGHLY recommend it. This is who should’ve replaced Regis.

One of THE– THE– weirdest subsets of the modern right-wing culture is these fringe hardcore dudes who turned on Clint Eastwood, who you’d think would be second only to the Duke for them. And Clint’s an actual showbiz Republican, but somehow he’s not right ENOUGH for them, they have ALL kinds of weird arguments against him… It’s like, WHO WOULD you guys get behind? I don’t know, it’s why deep down I can’t ever be a conservative… This idea that CLINT FUCKING EASTWOOD isn’t good enough for them but NEWT GINGRICH is some big-time asshole motherfucker worthy of “You GO, NEWT!” as if a powder-haired OLD FUCK who’s boring as hell and doesn’t like movies could ever be “cool.”

I might have phrased it differently, but: What Lex said.

  • Rod32303

    Naw. Lex got it right.

  • Rod32303

Was Schwartz fucking Hoover? Oh, I mean…

  • Ray

Lex, having spent FAR more time than you around plenty of “weird subsets of the modern right-wing culture,” I can assure you, you are COMPLETELY talking out of your pasty ass.

Eastwood is seen at worst as a Hollywood RINO. Million Dollar Baby didn’t sit well with some social cons, Gran Torino was well received, and plenty of people had opinions only about the movies themselves not the politics, but frankly, I’ve never heard any conservative, ever, hate on Eastwood to the degree you imagine.

Not to say that there wasn’t ONE looney tune out there who thought Eastwood “betrayed the cause” or such bullshit. But one or two ranters hardly constitutes a “subset.” We shouldn’t judge the entire Left by Jeff Wells’ “concentration camp” thuggery, why the alternative?

(Oh and Google tells me Gingrich loves Casablanca and The Hangover…. not a bad mix)

I could care less if Hoover was gay, but if so he was closeted ….. and what about Hale Boggs? What did Hoover have to do with his mysterious disappearance ….. nothing, something …. we’ll never know ….

  • Colin

So how corrupt is Gregg Schwartz? We will find out soon enough.

Nice to read something positive on this site after the wave of Spielberg bashing.

Clearly this guy doesn’t understand film with his uneducated film review of J Edgar. Audiences seem to forget, its a film, not a newspaper article, its not meant to be taken literal. I found J Edgar facinating, and his cosing statement about Bruckheimer (who is only a producer, NOT a director btw) is hilarious since Bruckheimer only “produces” films for those who seek escapism.

    My J Edgar review

Damn, that guy is America in a nutshell: Completely oblivious to the notion that people hate/deny what they fear most in themselves (see: Ted Haggard, Larry Craig, Roy Cohn and on and on) and firm in the belief that calling someone a homo is absolutely positively the WORST thing you could ever accuse them of. I’d like to believe that stuff will die with his generation, but…

  • Krillian

The key phrase of Lex is “fringe hardcode dudes.” Normal conservatives like Eastwood.

What became of that movement by FBI agents to have Hoover’s name removed from the Hoover Building?

With as much that is unrefuted about his abuse of power and trashing of Constitutional rights, the fact that there is even a debate about it ranks right up there with having a debate when the NAACP started saying “You know, we’d really appreciate it if you could remove those symbols of a society willing to commit treason to keep us enslaved from the very state houses that are supposed to represent us.”

  • http://wandrlust.tumblr.com/ PhDonohue

I have yet to see J. Edgar but I assumed that the underlying issue would be that if they focused at all on Hoover’s perceived sexuality that that would become the focus, not Hoover’s countless illegalities and abuses of power that went uncheck for nearly 50 years.

Having read Curt Gentry’s “J. Edgar Hoover: The Man and the Secrets.” a book that goes by the facts and is so exhaustively researched there isn’t much room conjecture — the only information found in regards to Hoover’s perceived homosexuality were the rumors. In my humble view although Tolson and Hoover were inseparable companions, Hoover, based on the information, seemed to be an asexual voyeur to the extent that power was his sexuality — and even that view is conjecture.

There is no hard evidence in regards to Hoover’s sexuality but there is a myriad of evidence that reveals truth about Hoover and all of the absolutely horrible things he did under his tenure (and these facts are available even with the majority of his files being disposed of, the sheer volume of his reach will never be fulling known). By focusing on the rumors it distracts from the shocking truth of Hoover, from the COINTELPRO to tapping MLK, sending tapes of his infidelities to his wife, and writing a letter to MLK telling him he should kill himself. These are the kind of shocking truths about Hoover that will be lost by a misguided focus on a rumor.
