Based upon the trailer, I’m afraid this doesn’t look harsh enough.

But seriously folks, these actors appear to have brought a scary-good A game to this thing and it also appears to have a real dramatic focal point that so many of these political “from the headlines TV movies lack.

I’m there. With Obama button on.

PS: 2008 was the year I officially lost my sense of humor about the Republicans. From Monsanto to Santorum, I just can’t laugh. But I can watch GAME CHANGE and remember Shakespeare found great drama (and humor) in great creeps.

  2. I was skeptical when I heard that it was going to use Heilman’s book, but not focus on Obama/Hilary at all, but I agree with Gaydos that Moore, Harrelson, and Harris look really good.

My one complaint is that they should have saved the name “Game Change” for the inevitable film that focuses on the Dems.

It’s amazing how far Palin’s star has fallen. Seems like the Tea Party doesn’t even value her opinion anymore. Stone’s “W” was surprisingly balanced and sympathetic towards President Bush, but this seems to paint Palin as a total power-grabbing ignoramous. Quitting the governor’s post midterm thinking that she could just collect speaking fees and get elected president proved as much

  3. I’ve ragged on this adaptation so much for taking the easy way out and ignoring most of what the book was about. But this trailer finally got my interest. It looks pretty funny.

  4. saw this a few weeks ago and it’s already gone from memory…doesn’t hew closely to the book at all…not as entertaining as ‘recount’…that said, i didn’t walk out so, there was that…..

  5. Wow … Moore looks awful in this. Prior to seeing this trailer, I was shocked at how much she physically resembles Palin. Now I’m shocked at how over-the-top she seems in this role. Not good.

  6. She’s on Fox News all the goddamn time. Though for whatever reason, my Tea Party family members “back home” seem to have lost their enthusiasm for her.

  7. Yeah, this looks awful, especially with everything so fresh in my mind. Aside from Recount and Sunset Limited, I can’t remember a direct to HBO movie being worth a shit.

  8. “I can’t remember a direct to HBO movie being worth a shit.”

    JASON ROBARDS IS SAKHAROV.

    DAVID KEITH IN GULAG.

    TERRY FOX STORY POWER.

    HARRY HAMLIN in LAGUNA HEAT.

  9. “Aside from Recount and Sunset Limited…”

I got a good chuckle out of that. It’s almost like saying, ” I can’t remember a direct to HBO movie being worth a shit, oh, except for the very last one, and the one right before that !”

  10. I have to say that Julianne Moore’s performance looks pretty incredible here.

I wasn’t so sure about the casting of Moore as Palin before, but she nails it in this trailer, it’s shockingly uncanny. Wow. Ed Harris and Woody Harrelson look good as well.

HBO is great, so I hope this will not disappoint. But it looks like solid political entertainment at least.

  11. Bents: There was Too Big to Fail, the one where Claire Danes was autistic, and the one with Drew Barrymore as a shut-in all after Recount.

  12. It’s an almost claustrophobic TV movie, but Conspiracy with Branagh and Stanley Tucci captures the Nazis better than anything else I’ve ever seen.

  13. I love the use of “American Woman”,a 1970 hit by The Guess Who as trailer background music for Palin and company. It hit me because I had lunch today at a local restaurant chain outlet (Salisbury House), now partly owned by the group’s still active and sounding great lead singer, Burton Cummings.

  14. Not to get all technical on this, but “direct to” generally refers to busted theatricals and films that were designed for home vid market.

HBO films are not “direct to” anything. You can call them TV movies if you must. BUT this is original cable TV programming, an original film produced by HBO to premiere on HBO.

And I agree with the comment on Ed Harris capturing John McCain body language. Great actor in perfect role. I’m there.

  15. I just have never seen who this is for. I mean, I think the fact that John Edwards was nearly VP is every bit as appalling as I’m sure most here find Palin, but even I wouldn’t watch a movie about John Edwards… and him running down hallways to evade reporters would be more dramatic than watching Julianne Moore say soundbites we all heard a million times. What audience is waiting for this? Who, watching it, isn’t going to say, I wish they’d told me something about the guy who actually won instead?

  16. “…I can’t remember a direct to HBO movie being worth a shit.”

YOU DON’T KNOW JACK. Pacino’s performance could’ve won Oscars if it was eligible.

  17. The use of “American Woman” is a painful reminder of how fucking miserable the music of the last ten years has been.

They’re using a song from 1970. A completely different era and definitely not 2008 specific. For fuck’s sake, there has to be a song from 2007-2008 that might have worked. Something from Wolfmother, maybe?

But really, this is a generational confession that we just can’t make music worth a shit anymore.

That said, I have HBO. I’ll check this out.

  18. Lex Palin is currently supporting Gingrich, in effect trying to hand the election to Obama. No wonder even Republicans want nothing to do with her anymore.

That said great actors aside this looks like a snore. A behind the scenes look at the Obama campaign with an actor like Harry Lennox in the lead and Hope Davis as Hillary would be a gas.

  19. It’s all about BARBARIANS AT THE GATE w/ James Garner, Jonathan Pryce, and Fred Dalton Thompson for me.

“We’re not talking ‘fuck you’ money, we’re talking ‘FUCK EVERYBODY’ money!”

  20. Looks like the this project emerged from deep within the left wing echo chamber.

Palin is on the sidelines now because that is where she belongs. She was a Hail Mary pass that wasn’t completed. If McCain would have held off Obama, Barrack would be at the same place today instead. Except there would be no snickering hit piece on HBO.

Mgmax nailed it. The Edwards story is 10X more interesting. Start with his early lawsuits, the infamous Kerry conversation regarding his son, being chased by the Inquirer, the dying wife, the criminal trial. Amazing no one is lining up to tell that story. I guess it hit a little too close to home. That phoney snookered a lot of people here.

    Don King: Only in America

    The Josephine Baker Story

Life & Death of Peter Sellers

How pissed is HBO that Sarah decided not to run? They crafted the ultimate hit piece solely to take her out, and she doesn’t cooperate. “What a b**ch”!

  22. The only people still obsessed with Sarah Palin are far-left Hollywood types. Even the Tea Party fans have given up on her.

As stated by others, this would be much more interesting if it followed the John Edwards story. The same Hollywood types who are obsessed with Sarah Palin fell for him hook, line, and sinker.

  23. “The Edwards story is 10X more interesting. Start with his early lawsuits, the infamous Kerry conversation regarding his son, being chased by the Inquirer, the dying wife, the criminal trial. Amazing no one is lining up to tell that story.”

Aaron Sorkin has been working on this for over a year now.

  24. This looks surprisingly balanced. It’s easy to say “McCain didn’t know what he was doing and Palin is an empty airhead”, but this actually gives both sides of the argument and makes Palin into a real political thinker who just happened to be thrust into the spotlight long before she was ready.
