Back To The Beach
I have to get over to the 2012 Spirit Awards in Santa Monica, which Seth Rogen will be hosting. The show begins at 1:30 pm, but the best part is the 90 minutes of schmooze time before it kicks off. Most of the indie community shows up every year. For me it’s a picture- and video-taking orgy. As long as the weather isn’t chilly and blustery like last year, everything’ll be jake.
Seriously — what’s the deal with the tent here?
If everyone in attendance every year just tipped 1/100 of 1% I’m almost certain they could rent out a fairly sizable auditorium with a decent sound system and have plenty left to spare.
It’s just like an image thing, isn’t it? “Starving artists” and such…
It’s an image of laid back cool, not starving artists. Everything else happens “in a room” out there. This place has sand on the red carpet. It really is a day at the beach. And that’s not the only tent. The parties around it are all in tents.
Except for last year, they’ve always used the tent, right? This isn’t new.
I refuse to accept Jeff’s Twitter feed as the full expression of his bellicosity and he’s said nothing here about the winners, so to satifsy my hunger for the furious outrage, I will now watching a quadruple bill of NETWORK, PAYBACK, HARDCORE and FALLING DOWN.
I feel weird being pissed off about a very good movie winning all these awards but man, Take Shelter really should have dominated.
^^Falling Down is one of those movies that isn’t exactly great but I just absolutely love it. Michael Douglas probably had more to do with its awesomeness than anyone.
I always laugh when I see AMG S class Mercs and 750il limos interspersed with Town Cars. Have the people who go for Lincolns and Cadillacs ever been in a proper car?
There’s a difference between DRIVING a car and RIDING in one and I always laugh when I see someone who thinks they have some superior angle only to be revealed to be a poseur….
Limos are tacky. Town cars are a much better experience.
What’s really funny are films like THE DESCENDANTS, WIN WIN and 50/50 (among others) being called “independent productions” when they were made in-house for deep pocketed studios (Fox, LIonsgate) through their small film banners (Searchlight, Mandate).
These are not films that need the exposure that used to come to the nominees who were truly small independent films like MAN PUSH CART and MEDICINE FOR MELANCHOLY that would have me trying to find them on DVD.
Thanks for nothing, Gaydos – off your comment I looked at Jeff’s twitter feed.
Dear effing Christ is there a whole lot of black soul suck there. I need to borrow a puppy, baby or LOCAL HERO to restore some of the karma just reading that cost me.
What cracked me up was Jeff’s dismay at the lack of celery sticks. No one else in the history of the planet has ever been dismayed at the lack of celery sticks.
Roy,
I agree, there’s a huge difference. Are you saying the back of a town car beats the back of an s class?
Even Putin gave up his zil, eventually.
Chapter 31. “No wifi for MacBook Pro and no celery sticks.”
what does it mean? “back of a town car beats the back of an s class”. i really love thos car in the parking area. i am pretty sure that its like my car who has a good car part.
