The Island President, a better than decent climate-change doc, opens tomorrow. Bully opens Friday, and I’ve opined about that. I haven’t seen Dark Tide and I wouldn’t watch Goon on a bet. I saw Intruders months ago and it didn’t think it had enough. I’ll see Mirror Mirror tomorrow night, but a friend who’s seen it says “it’s a kid’s film.” I ran my review of Turn Me On, Dammit! last January. Wrath of the Titans screens tonight at 7:30.
Oh, and Blurays of A Streetcar Named Desire and the 70th anniversary, Robert Harris-approved edition of Casablanca (i.e., an allegedly grainier rendering) arrived today.
When Tarsem called Mirror Mirror “sickeningly kiddie,” he meant it. It reminded me of one of Universal’s kids movies from the 90s; light, silly, and a little bit campy, but not condescending. It’s entertaining and inspired enough to justify being one of many Snow White films this year. I was pleasantly surprised, considering how AWFUL the commercials have been.
I watched The Island President a couple of weeks ago, and it’s the best movie of the year so far. The access given is truly a thing to see. I also like Nasheed’s self-awareness, and understand reality vs idealism.

I’d catch Goon if you have a chance. It’s a surprisingly sharp and low-key character comedy that has several solid performances (Liev Schreiber is great, but he has the best role too). It’s no ‘run out and see’ picture, but it deserves to find an audience, and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Wrath of the Titans mostly delivers on what it promises (including terrific 3D). If you want what the film is selling, you’ll enjoy yourself (Neeson and Fiennes are a hoot). If not, why go in the first place? Intruders bored me silly (surprisingly so), but I’m looking forward to Mirror Mirror purely because my daughter actually wants to see it (in a cruel bit of irony, my first-born has very little interest in doing the whole ‘see movies in a theater’ thing).
