Now That It’s Over

The difference between the original R-rated version of The King’s Speech and the PG-13 version that The Weinstein Co. released after the 2011 Oscars was significant. The vulgarisms that Colin Firth‘s King George VI used during his therapy sessions with Geoffrey Rush‘s Lionel Logue were amusing and illustrative, and their absence diluted the film. But the f-bombs that will be bleeped out for a PG-13 version of Bully, as reported by the L.A. TimesSteven Zeitchik, added nothing vital to the R version in the first place. The f-bomb thing has been smoke all the way.

Maybe, but I can hear the F-word in Fast Five, so the MPAA had it coming.

  2. totally. smoke.

harvey played his cards brilliantly and now ‘bully’ is one of the best known docs in memory. if the mpaa had given it a pg-13 in the first place we wouldn’t have had the petition, rep. honda’s involvement, all the movie stars’ involvement, the psa’s from honda and billy jean king, tons of press, and the film would have gone unnoticed.

weinstein knows what he’s doing, always has when it comes to publicity, but here with ‘bully’ he’s been genius

  3. oh yeah — we wouldn’t have had the agreement from theater chains to show the movie to kids under 17 w/o an accompanying adult if they have a note from their parents, or with a call from mom or dad (over the phone).

    now, that’s press. harvey 1, mpaa 0

  4. have to agree on the ‘smoke’… fwiw: while killing time before a ‘three stooges’ screening at the c.c. amc friday afternoon i took in ‘bully’… ten people in the audience (two of whom were the abc news people getting in-and-out reactions)… no one under the age of 35… i’m pretty sure that no kids are going to voluntarily see this…hate to think of how small the crowd would have been without the ‘smoke’…

  5. For what it’s worth, I watched The King’s Speech again recently. I don’t care what anyone says, it’s a really enjoyable movie and immensely re-watchable.

  6. This is great — now, instead of kids not seeing it due to the ratings imbroglio… they can not see it because they aren’t interested.
