48 Frames Changes Everything

The state of cinema as most of us know it changed radically today when 10 minutes of footage from Peter Jackson‘s 48 frames-per-second 3D The Hobbit were shown on the huge Collisseum screen inside Caeser’s Palace today. 48 fps 3D is such a startling and game-changing thing that it’s like the introduction of sound in 1927, CinemaScope in 1953, and high-end 3D with Avatar. I was knocked back in my seat…open-mouthed. This is the most startlingly “real” form of cinema I’ve ever seen, so much so that it isn’t “cinema.” And there’s the rub.

It’s like watching super high-def video, or without that filtered, painterly, brushstroke-y, looking-through-a-window feeling that feature films have delivered since forever. On one level what I saw this morning was fucking fantastic, and on another it removed the artistic scrim or membrane that separates the audience from the performers. Which gave a little feeling of “hmmm.”

The effect is that you’re not really watching a “film.” You’re watching, it seems, high-def video footage that, in an earlier time, might have been shot simultaneously along with the traditionally captured, more cinematic version that would be shown in theatres…or so you would have told yourself as you watched it in 1998 or 2005 or whenever. Except this is now and the high-def, 48 fps footage we saw this morning is it — this is how the movie will actually look.

Forget the windowpane. You’re right there and it’s breathtaking — no strobing, no flickering, pure fluidity and much more density of information. This makes the action scenes seem more realistic because it looks too real to be tricked up, and the CG stuff looks astonishing for the same reason.

Believe it or not but I, Jeffrey Wells, a Peter Jackson and Rings trilogy hater from way back, am looking forward big-time to The Hobbit now. I really am. This is going to be amazing. Shallow Hal that I am, I’m now into it big-time.

In a manner of speaking I was creaming in my pants this morning. This is almost too good, I was half-telling myself. It’s the best 3D I’ve ever seen and probably ever will see in my life. 48 fps 3D is so much easier on your eyes than 24 fps 3D. It was like being on a strange new planet, watching this process. It looks a lot like 60 fps Showscan did way back when. But it’s not “cinema” — it’s the new world. You definitely can’t see this at home. Or at least you won’t be able to for a while yet.

Younger audiences and persons like myself will, I suspect, completely flip over this when The Hobbit opens in December. And I can’t wait to see 48 fps in 2D. In fact, I agree with a statement posted this morning by About.com’s Rebecca Murray that “once audiences get to see The Hobbit screened at the 48 frames per second rate, I can guarantee moviegoers are going to demand all films be presented at 48 fps.”

But because 48 fps 3D is not “cinema” in the pre-4.28-12 sense of the term, some have reacted very negatively to what we saw this morning. Older viewers especially. Guys of a certain age are going to dig in their heels and say “nope, not me, no way…this isn’t a movie …this is live video.” Grain monks are going to have screaming fits. I can hear the rants already: “It’s too CNN! Like a local newcast report with high-def cameras. It’s not dreamy or compositional enough. The worst technical thing that has ever happened to motion pictures! It’s the new Smellovision,” etc.

I disagree. 48 fps is too jolting and breathtaking. I believe that henceforth 48 fps will not just become the norm but we’re going to hear calls for up-rezzing classic 24 fps films to 48 fps. Douglas Trumbull has allegedly done such conversions, and I for one would be highly in favor if they caught on. And yet 48 fps kills that classic filtered, strobing effect that we’ve known all our lives. It’s a shocker, all right, and I’m not sure if the industry as a whole is going to be on my side of this.

But any action or spectacle director henceforth is going to have to use 48 fps, 3D or not. It’s just too astonishing to dismiss.

Here’s a good summary of reactions so far from Indiewire‘s Kevin Jagernauth.

From AICN’s Moises Chiullan: “I have major reservations, but at the same time am beyond awed at many elements of what hit my visual cortex. Recalling the sweeping landscape shots they opened with now, I almost feel tears welling, and I can’t explain why. It was overwhelming in the most literal sense. It directly assaults your synapses with twice as much information through your retinas as you have become conditioned to expect from traditional cinema. I did not see the digital seams around creatures like Gollum and the trolls, a major benefit over 24fps. The creatures had a sense of mass in the environment, which was disconcerting in a good way.”

  • T. J. Kong

What are the prospects for exhibition adopting the technology for The Hobbit? David Bordwell did an interesting post yesterday or the day before about all the new projection technologies that Cameron, Lucas, Jackson, et al. are pushing that implied that exhibitors are already feeling pinched from upgrading to digital projection.

  • Mark

Interesting. Personally, I won’t have a take on the matter until Wally Pfister tells me to hate it. But it is definitely exciting to see JW excited.

As far as best 3D you may ever see, isn’t Cameron doing Avatars at 60fps? This is like the razor blade battle last decade between Gillete and Schick. Yes…it’s exactly like that. How many blades can you fit onto a plastic handle?

  • Tristan Eldritch2

“It’s like watching super high-def video, or without that filtered, painterly, brushstroke-y, looking-through a window feeling that feature films have delivered since forever. On one level it’s fantastic, and on another level it removes the artistic scrim or membrane that separates the audience from the performers.”

Sounds really like what Michael Mann has being trying to achieve with his last couple of movies.

  • JLC

“Don’t like color for nothing. Watched Bonanza last night and the Ponderosa looked fake. Hardly recognized Little Joe.”

I’m wondering the same thing as Kong. Does it matter how good it is if only three theatres can show it?

I also wonder what Ebert thinks about this. He’s been pushing high-frame-rate film almost as hard as he’s been dumping on 3D. Now he has to deal with both.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! YOU FOUND a GREAT reason to be there.
I think it was Garret Graham who appeared in some test footage of some 70 fps thing in the late 70’s.

This sounds so much better. Thanks Jeff

  • Ray

    THOUGHTS:

    1. Isn’t this what Roger Ebert’s been calling for forever? I remember him being a huge champion of higher FPS versus digital screening….. ironic that we now get to see the benefits of combining higher FPS **with** digital.

    2. Hasn’t Jackson experimented with this before? I recall years ago when he started experimenting with the Red camera he shot stuff at higher frame rates….. wasn’t that World War One short he made shot at a higher rate? (Speaking of which- WHERE THE HELL IS that short movie? YEARS later and all you can find anywhere are the trailers but supposedly it was a 12-minute movie….. I can find elephants humping beavers on the internet but I can’t find a five-year-old short film by one of the biggest directors on Earth?!??)

    3. “You definitely can’t see this at home.”

Why not? IT’S DIGITAL. You can’t see it on a TV running at 1080p obviously but what about a high-end computer monitor?

    4. “Douglas Trumbull has allegedly done such conversions, and I for one would be highly in favor if they caught on.”

WHERE DO WE KICKSTARTER “BLADE RUNNER” in 48 FPS?

  • Wrecktem

Wait until studios start seeing their FX budgets DOUBLE. They’ll LOVE to pull the trigger on this one.

    That’s sarcasm, by the way.

  • JeffK

I’m behind the on the latest tech, so I might be wrong on this, but to show 24 fps 3D, from a single projector, you need quadruple the frame rate (each frame is shown twice), so current cinema projectors are capable of at least 96 fps. My guess is that they top off at 120 fps, which would be just enough for 30 fps 3D. HOWEVER, 24p 3D shows each frame twice to fill your eyes with enough light and overcome the time limit of image permanence in your brain. If 48 fps cinema is fast enough for human perception that each frame only needs to be shown once, then its possible that some theaters would only need a simple software upgrade.

Or maybe I got that completely wrong, but it would be nice if that’s the case. Either way, this is an exciting time to be a cinephile.

  • lazarus

Obviously not all the theatres showing The Hobbit are going to have this equipment.

So how’s that going to work? Is the 24fps version just going to look “normal”? Not to mention seeing it in 2D?

What’s interesting here is that sound and color were both two separate dividing lines. This is coming at us right in the middle of the big 3D “experiment”, which Avatar justified but certainly didn’t settle. Are people demanding everything to be in 3D? Are they okay with the premium ticket prices? These haven’t really been decided conclusively, right?

The other thing is that 48fps is SUPER techy. People understand the difference between silent and sound, between B&W and color, and obviously now between 2D and 3D. But how the fuck are they going to advertise or explain this to the general public? They certainly can’t charge more for it when there’s no way to get people to understand in advance.

  • mpneeb

    Sounds great.
But how many theaters are going to make the upgrade?
Near as I can tell, no studio has been there with resources (i.e. money) to help theaters make the various transitions.

  • Telemachos

Ray: that short was never released publicly (or even screened other than for certain audiences at tradeshows like NAB). It wasn’t shot at a high frame-rate, but it was one of the first experiments of shooting 4K-digital with the RED-One.

mpneeb: according to this THR article, the bulk of theaters around the world will be upgraded to be able to project 48fps media — http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/peter-jackson-hobbit-48-frames-per-second-rate-james-cameron-313867

  • Ray

    Thanks for the education, Telemachos.

Still wish I could see it. Again: INTERNET HAS EVERYTHING ELSE…. but not **that**??

  • lazarus

“The bulk” of theatres around the world aren’t digital, no? You’re referring to a majority?

The theatres that are already showing things in 3D will be able to upgrade, but the rest?

  • Telemachos

Sorry, yes, the bulk of digital cinemas.

  • Patrick Feerick

Yessss! 24 frames just isn’t enough anymore. Ever since I got a high definition TV movies in general look choppy. Especially when there’s a slow panning shot, the picture tearing always bugs me. Can’t wait.

  • JeffK

@lazarus Since “fantasy imagery” does seem to be a huge selling point for world wide releases (John Carter even did o.k. overseas) you do bring up a valid point. All this technical hoopla will only generate income in first world areas, and lately fantasy-blockbuster type movies (which make up most of 3D content besides animation) have been pulling in just as much overseas.

That said, 24fps 3D does look broken to my eyes, anything to get rid of the jutter is more than welcome, especially when the multiplexes in my area do their best to keep 2D movies on as few screens as possible.

  • RoyBatty Returns

For one example of the unintended fallout from this, going to create major headaches for make-up people .

For months after getting my 1080 60″ plasma, I found myself staring at the actors face details, as all their pores, stubble, etc became crystal clear (was especially true watching old TV shows remastered from the original 16mm film stock).

  • HarryWarden

Is it akin to the look LED TVs give shows when you enable the effect in that it makes them look like daytime soaps? If so, I already hate it. Said effect makes them look more “real” sure but also cheap (hence the daytime soap analogy).

  • Wrecktem

Let’s see how many digital projectors will be capable of playing 3D 48 fps by the time Hobbit comes out. 2D, yes. 3D…not so much.

  • Jesse Crall

    I’m glad Jeff’s getting his money’s worth in Vegas…

Tristan’s Michael Mann comment seems right, because though I wasn’t crazy about Public Enemies, visually it looked so clean and was a definite cut above anything else presented on screen beforehand. I think grainier films will always remain relevant, especially for darker subjects like Winter’s Bone type flicks. But for CGI-type movies, cleaner, sharper and bigger is always better, at least visually, Great news overall, especially for guys like me who aren’t inclined to dig Hobbits. Now we’ve got something to lap up from a technical standpoint.

  • Telemachos

Obviously, I haven’t seen any Hobbit footage, since I’m not at CinemaCon.

However, I have seen RED’s showreel projected at 4K (this was the older reel , pre-EPIC footage). 4K digital projection looks absolutely stunning. It doesn’t look like film. However, it doesn’t look like video either. It has the rich latitude of film but without grain. It’s its own beast.

I imagine 4K footage at 48fps is this, except even moreso.

  • cricket

Thanks, Jeff. Stuff like this is why I read your blog. 48fps isn’t just an advancement, it’s a paradigm shift, and not everyone is gonna see that at first.

  • gazer

Great post, Mr. Wells. Can’t wait to see a 48fps showing of The Hobbit, if it’s at all possible in my “region” come December. I wonder whether Jackson and WB have become worried of the commercial potential of 48fps based on the mixed reactions from CinemaCon, or whether the fact of the director’s year long experience with seeing footage in 48fps has convinced him that this is the natural (r)evolution of “film,” and that a transitional phase (that he himself might have experienced as well) is to be expected. Nevertheless, this(48fps) sounds extremely interesting…

One thing people seem to be forgetting is that a film shot at 48 fps will have to be shot at a faster than normal shutter speed as well. The correct speed would be 1/96 second, which has been used in action movies for a chaotic, hyper real look. So if your theatre projects the film at 24 fps, the image will have the jerky, irritating look of the opening sequence in Saving Private Ryan or the last two Bourne movies.

Perhaps theatres will apply a blurring filter to the 24 fps version of the film, but even if you are attending a 2D presentation of the film, I would make sure it is projected at 48 fps, or else you will be subjected to the entire film looking like a choppy mess.

This is also the reason 48 fps up-conversions of older films will look terrible. The frames were captured with slow shutter speeds (1/48 sec), so the image is blurry whenever a subject moves and this cannot be corrected.

  • Ray DeRousse

Apparently the world really is going to end this year.

  • http://www.cinemafunk.com/ Aaron Weiss

I’m rather intrigued by 48fps, and most have brought up all the pros and cons of the proposed frame rate. The Hobbit will be a decent test for it, but I think, just like 3D, it will be used mostly on higher budgeted films and will priced out of the range for the typical movie-goer.

While the sincere attempt to make the cinema experience better is certainly present, I also see the attempt to make another gimmick to get butts back into seats. Essentially, can we please just make interesting, original films without all the gimmicks?

  • T. J. Kong

I just re-watched the 720p trailer. It looks fine totally normal, which means that if 48fps is a total disaster or theaters don’t/won’t convert, there is certainly a way of turning whatever was captured into a perfectly fine looking conventional film.

  • TimDG

There’s no way Warner doesn’t cover its ass with a satisfactory 24 fps alternative.

  • bluefugue

    >For months after getting my 1080 60″ plasma, I found myself staring at the actors face details, as all their pores, stubble, etc became crystal clear (was especially true watching old TV shows remastered from the original 16mm film stock).

I get that old TV shoes struck from camera negatives and displayed at higher resolutions than they were meant for could be a problem. But why would makeup look any worse at 48 fps than at 24, if the image resolution is the same as it’s been before (whether 35mm, which exceeds what a 1080p monitor can attain, or modern 4k digital etc.)?

Looking forward to your full review. Speaking of which, what happened to your promised Flight review? I understand embargoes must be honored, but you’ve hinted at your feelings for both Not Fade Away and Flight but haven’t delved in, and plenty of other critics have let loose on all three. low cost health insurance

I had a put up a couple of very droll comments but they were “accidentally” erased by Jeff. I’m sure that my saying that if the grain monks ever got together with the 1.85 fascists they could make Jeff feel sufficiently oppressed to write his own “Darkness At Noon.”

On one level what I saw this morning was fucking fantastic, and on another it removed the artistic scrim or membrane that separates the audience from the performers.

I believe everything said was very reasonable. However, what about this? what if you wrote a catchier title? I ain’t suggesting your information isn’t solid., but suppose you added a headline to maybe grab a person’s attention? I mean 48 frames changes everything :: hollywood elsewhere is a little boring. You should peek at Yahoo’s front page and note how they write article titles to get people to open the links. You might add a video or a related pic or two to get people interested about everything’ve written. In my opinion, it would make your blog a little bit more interesting.
