Nicholas Stoller and Jason Segel‘s The Five-Year Engagement is a tank…a dead manatee. Yesterday it earned a lousy $3.4 million in 2,936 situations, averaging $1158 per screen. That forecasts a $10 million weekend haul, or about 50% of what Universal, its distributor, was looking for.

So what happened? Was it the prospect of sitting through a relationship that never goes anywhere and just kind of flounders around? Was it the Jason-Segel-isn’t-a-star factor, or should I leave that one alone? Does this hurt Segel and costar Emily Blunt, or was it just the so-whatter concept or…?

  • Robert Cashill

Audience fatigue, too, before the summer season begins on Friday. Late April tends to be a dumping ground for indies and less competitive studio releases.

  • DoctorWho

Is there seriously someone out there that doesn’t like Jason Segel? He’s only made the best romantic comedy in the past decade and resurrected The Muppets in all its glory.

  • DiscoNap

Not to mention he’s the best part of a sitcom that’s pretty good at times. I may actually agree with Wells about him not being a leading man though. He’s great in buddy roles.

  • Circumvrent

Segal’s the real deal. I can’t think of any other actor who’ll be in a film by Apatow and the Duplass Brothers in the same calendar year.

  • Edward Havens

@Robert… so if it’s “audience fatigue” before the summer season starts, and late April is a “dumping ground” for less competitive studio releases, I respectfully request you explain away Fast Five’s $86m weekend gross this same weekend last year. Or Obsessed’s $28m weekend gross this same weekend in 2009.

Plain and simple fact: It doesn’t matter what weekend a movie is released. If the masses want to see a movie, they’ll see the movie regardless of what weekend it’s released on. The only true “dead zones” for releasing new movies seems to be Week 36, Labor Day weekend, and Week 49, the week after Thanksgiving weekend. Other than that, there is enough statistical data to show one can release anything and see it become a hit, as long as enough people desire to see it. Even The Devil Inside this year showed Week 1 can support a hit film.

  • Los Bostonian

This movie never had a great trailer and I am not sure I buy the pairing of Blunt and Segal. I think this hurts Blunt a lot more than Segal, I can’t even remember her last hit. Segal is gonna coast on the Muppets for a few years and seems to have the writing ability to keep himself viable for a long time, especially once HIMYM goes off the air. Forgetting Sarah Marshall buys him a ton of leeway in my book.

  • Flash Gordon

Since it’s going to be #1 again this weekend and he didn’t even think it’s $33 million opening at only 2015 locations last weekend was even worth mentioning in the last Oscar Poker podcast, what will it take to make Wells say or write the words “Think Like a Man”? I know it’s a “black” movie but it’s success should not be completely ignored.

Since I can’t stand the sight of Emily Cun– oops, I mean Blunt, that movie’s weak opening is completely understood.

  • Colin

Who can’t stand the sight of Emily Blunt, but salivates at the hope that Wells mentions the awful Think Like A Man.

  • Cadavra

Segel fatigue: the former has been in, what, three pictures in the last five months on top of his TV series.

Apatow-in-non-excretory-humor-mode fatigue: his crowd prefers farts over hearts.

Blunt’s an actress, not a star. No one expects her to open a picture, and with YEMEN doing well, this is at worst a wash for her.

  • stanley

Jason Segal as a leading man. I’ve seen that TV show a couple of times and maybe that makes me bias but he looks and acts like a marshmallow to me. Sorry, I haven’t seen him in a movie but I have no interest because, well, do I need to repeat myself?

  • Flash Gordon

Not salivating. Just wondering why Wells snobbery toward black targeted films prevents him from even mentioning that this one even exists.

  • DuluozGray

How would this hurt Emily Blunt, she’s just the flavor of the week, yet another young actress Hollywood runs into the ground for a few years before we never hear from her again.

And she is gross. Chicks with really defined chins and deep clefts are nasty.

  • Robert Cashill

Edward, you can throw in MEAN GIRLS, and maybe UNITED 93 and the ELM STREET remake, too. But a handful of hit films released the last Friday of April does not a trend make.

I went back 20 years (well before the first weekend of May was established as the first week of the summer movie season, which was about 1998/1999) and it’s all flops, like TOWN AND COUNTRY and WITH HONORS. (Not to mention the ton of indie no-hopers released the last two weekends of April.) If audiences turn up for them, great–but while FAST FIVE may be the beginning of a new trend to extend summer (just as the Christmas movie season now begins the first weekend of November), most of what’s been released has been released with modest expectations.THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT fits that model.

  • great scott

Think Like a Man MUST be awful. An all black cast and Ebert only gives it two stars. Yeah, I said it.

  • JR

I saw it yesterday, and it just isn’t a very good movie. The reviews are “meh” and the word of mouth is poor. Women friends of mine who find something love in the worst of romcoms are panning this one.

  • BoulderKid

Jeff’s venom towards Segal is baffling. He never offers any criticism of his actual work whether it be his acting or writing, it’s just the weight factor. The bizzare thing is Segal is not even overweight in the traditional sense. His physical profile is roughly the same as Bill Murray had in 1980s or Tom Hanks has had ten years ago or so (now Hanks has ballooned well past Segal), and no one was calling out for them to layoff the Pizza.

Segal is obviously talented and seems like a genuinely good guy, what is with the hate. Is he the most versatile actor in the world? No, but he stays in his range and is perfectly respectable as the well meaning regular guy in dramedies.

Yes his movie underperformed but that happens all the time for universally well liked actors. Didn’t Rudd’s Wanderlust open to half of what the Segal film did just a month ago?

  • George Prager

Yeesh. Why all the hate for Emily Blunt? I would never call an actress a cunt on these threads, nor would I call them nasty.
She was great in YOUNG VICTORIA. I think the problem with this movie is that guys don’t want to see a movie about getting engaged. I think the era of Apatow stars co-writing screenplays is over. They suck at it. Yes, maybe the one script they have slaved over for 10 years is worth making but that’s it.

“Chicks with really defined chins and deep clefts are nasty.”

Nasty how? I guess I need to read some eugenics books. Any recommendations?

  • Joe Gillis

In the words of William Goldman, “People go to see hits because they want to see that movie, people don’t go to flops because they don’t want to see that movie.” We can go into the B.S. whys and wherefores, but the point is just that people don’t want to see this movie. Put it in your pocket and move on.

  • George Prager

“Chicks with really weak chins and prominent noses are nasty.”
    — Dr. Josef Rudolf Mengele

  • great scott

The Five Year Engagement MUST be awful Ebert didn’t even bother to see it. Yeah, I said it.

  • Jesse Crall

Blunt’s talented and sexy. This low gross hurts her prospects for carrying a slick studio picture but it’s not a reflection on her capabilities as a dynamic screen presence.

  • DuluozGray

Defined chins are masculine, ergo, Prager likes masculine looking chicks.

Tell me Prager, you watch women’s bodybuilding too, right? Do you just get off on chicks with man faces, or with man bodies as well?

  • Gabe@ThePlaylist

It was the highest scoring film in test screenings OF ALL TIME. I would say Think Like A Man MUST be worth SOME sort of discussion.

And no, I have not seen it.

  • Jesse Crall

Watch out, Prager. Next time it rains Duluoz is gonna wander into your garage, dripping wet and desperate for passion.

  • Terry McCarty

Here’s my theory: Nicholas Stoller wanted to direct his “personal” film (THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT is based upon Stoller’s engagement/marriage) after two hits, just like Apatow.

  • Colin

Well Dulouz, I hear Justin Bieber is in your area next week. You’ll love him. He has no chin at all.

  • DuluozGray

Amazed at how many presumably straight guys in here like chicks with man faces.

Yet somehow, I am the one with the problem. Welcome to H-E, planet unknown.

  • cinefan

Maybe it’s just me but I’ve never met a man with Emily Blunt’s face.

Not to mention those amazing blue eyes…

If I did, I’d have to adjust my sexual orientation.

  • DuluozGray

    there’s no accounting for taste.

I usually find that guys who like homely chicks like Blunt are usually quite unattractive themselves and can’t even get a decent looking girl, much less a good looking one. Since they are average at best, they tend to dial down their qualifications. Kind of like when you see fat people date each other. Are they really attracted to one another?

  • cinefan

I like how you manage to be mean and nasty to both Blunt and the people who like her all at the same time.

I just hope you’re not as big an asshole in real life as you seem to be in your postings.

  • dino velvet

I don’t find her sexy either. There’s something offputting about her. Shrug.

  • Gabe@ThePlaylist

Shit, slow down, I gotta take notes. I want to make sure I get all this interesting information you guys want to share about Emily Blunt being unattractive. This opinion matters!

  • Ira Parks

    GABE TORO SAYS…

None of you guys know how to get laid. Look, I’ve had my share, and it’s been great, but I won’t go into that here. I’ll only say that I feel like a rodent’s anus for making that “HE is like a rodent’s anus” remark a few days ago. Really weird Duluoz-level stuff. I regret that one. Remember when we used to talk about movies?

  • Jesse Crall

Duluoz is just cranky because his small, flaccid dick has been trapped under a heavy roll of flesh for the last decade. He deserves our pity and whatever self-cleaning devices we’re willing to send his way. Poor fella can’t stand up to take his favored 20 minute showers anymore.

  • Gabe@ThePlaylist

    This fuckin’ guy.

  • Colin

Amazingly enough, a poll of overweight singles just came in and 97% of them said they didn’t find Duluoz Gray attractive. The other 3% is the margin of error.

  • DiscoNap

Seriously, when has what Lex said ever endangered Jeff’s future ability to snag an interview with an actress as much as what is going on here right now?

  • Eddie Mars Attacks!

I agree with DiscoNap. Some of the comments on this thread are despicable.

  • Ira Parks

    GABE TORO SAYS…

Re: Appropriating LexG’s style: Look, I was in my twenties. I was experimenting, trying to be cool, impress my friends. Haven’t you ever done something like that? I’ve admitted it, let’s move on.

  • Jesse Crall

Yeah, what DiscoNap said. Didn’t Jeff lose an interview with Carey Mulligan because of similar misogyny?

  • George Prager

“Since they are average at best, they tend to dial down their qualifications. ”
This is interesting. So how do you explain LexG, or John Krasinski?

I read the last Warren Beatty biography, apparently, some of the “chicks” he was banging were not smoking hot. Apparently his beauty was enough for him. He only had to look in the mirror, he didn’t need to seek it out. People wondered why the very-attractive-in-her-youth Mary McCarthy married Edmund Wilson, a notorious horn dog, who looked like Elmer Fudd. Same deal.

  • Jesse Crall

The Biskind one? Yeah, Beatty just loved women. He even lost his train of thought when a chick in a full-on burka walked passed. With no idea what she looked like, Beatty just knew that he wanted her. Which is why he got SO much action, even for a movie star. Just wanted a piece, no matter the cut.

  • Ira Parks

    LEXG SAYS…

I’m sure Emily Blunt is rolling into the HE comments section on the regular to get VALIDATION from DOUCHEGRAY. Hat tip to all those mentioning male chins. I can’t finish my Quiznos now. JOB WELL DONE.

  • Glenn Kenny

“Amazed at how many presumably straight guys in here like chicks with man faces.

Yet somehow, I am the one with the problem. Welcome to H-E, planet unknown.”

What makes DG “the one with the problem” isn’t that he doesn’t find Emily Blunt attractive. It’s that he feels the need to announce that he doesn’t find Emily Blunt attractive, and he needs to announce it in relatively hateful and ugly terms, and that he does so from behind a pseudonym. A pretentious pseudonym, at that. It’s amazing he doesn’t get that. But if he got it, he wouldn’t be the miserable horror that he is.

  • DuluozGray

So now it is considered misogynistic to say a chick with a man chin has a man chin? You guys are REALLY sensitive.

I like Jesse Crall’s attempt at not being a milquetoast ass kisser. Nice try, dude, but you’re still a milquetoast ass kisser.

  • Glenn Kenny

Who said “misogynistic?” (Which is the wrong usage anyway, but by now nobody knows the goddamn difference anyway.) It’s just dickish. Ostentatiously dickish. So Emily Blunt has what you consider “a man chin.” Hasn’t really had much effect on the trajectory of her career thus far. So why is your god-almighty opinion on the matter suddenly pertinent, or even of interest? You clearly aren’t pointing it out in any appreciable “hail fellow well met” manner. Your whole function here is to despise, and be despised in turn, so why complain?

  • Kakihara

Speaking of disappointing box office, I have a feeling Avengers is gonna kick Dark Shadows’ ass. The vampire gimmick is tired, these clips aren’t doing it for me, and it’s based off a niche show which most people are too young to know or care about. *And* they still chose to keep it in the early 70s setting of the original series, even though the target audience would not care about the 70s. It’ll probably do better internationally than Lost in Space, because of the Depp factor, but I don’t see it being a hit.

  • George Prager

SO, DeeZee…you don’t have a dog in this Emily Blunt fight?

“It’ll probably do better internationally than Lost in Space…”
And Howard Molson bought a new shovel.

  • JR

    DGray is an idiot.

  • DiscoNap

I’m surprised DZ didn’t mention that Dark Shadows would fail because Zodiac already did the same thing and audiences hadn’t forgiven Depp for Arizona Dream.

Man chin…maybe. Blunt’s problem is that her skin is kind of gross. It looks oily and otherwise yucky. She looks older than she should for her age as a result of her skin.

  • Super Soul

This thread went pretty quickly from William Goldman to William Golding.

  • DuluozGray

Here comes Glenn Kenny! Here to defend the poor actress against aspersions cast at her man chin.

    Too cute, Glenn. Too cute.

  • Krillian

Going on and on about Emily Blunt’s chin is so… Mr. Blackwell.

Let’s try this. Name three actresses you find hot.

DuluozGray is the least pleasant person I’ve come across on the internet. And that’s saying quite a bit.

Hey, DGray, your wife is beautiful, right? And you’re Brad Pitt’s twin, right? And your dick is twelve inches and stays hard all night, right? And you’re a professional screenwriter, right?

Fucking internet bad ass is all you are.

Emily Blunt is gorgeous. But even if I didn’t think she was, I’d still find your comments ridiculous and despicable. I hope your “wife” knows what kind of guy she’s stuck with.

  • John M

Hey, why don’t I bother reading comments here anymore?

Oh…[reads this entire thread]…oh, right. Yeah.

  • bitplaya

The ads for this were total shit . Had no dea what the movie was about. The studio didn’t even try. We’ll I’m sure that’s the last movie we see staring a tall white guy, oh my bad that logic only applies to black movies that under perform. They probbaly should have pushed that Kevin Hart was in this thing since he’s basically the lead in the current number one movie. Jseg will do just fine. Mashall was gold and he seems decent.

  • Kakihara

Oh, and not really surprised about 5-Year Engagement. It seemed like two different plot ideas merged into one. As for Think Like a Man’s success, hot chicks sell. If Tower Heist had a more attractive actress hitting on Murphy’s character than what’s-her-name from Precious, then it would probably have done better, too.

  • Cadavra

As I’ve said before, DARK SHADOWS is TWILIGHT for baby boomers. People under 35 simply cannot comprehend the concept of rushing home from school every day for any reason, especially to watch a TV show. You wanna know how DS is gonna perform, go look at the numbers for RED. That’s the target audience, whether Warners wants to admit it or not.

  • Edward Havens

DeeZee is clearly Paul Dergarabedian, as both have about as much insight in to box office analysis as Jamie Kennedy knows about Tolstoy or John Boehner knows about women’s reproductive health.

  • Kakihara

Cadavra: “As I’ve said before, DARK SHADOWS is TWILIGHT for baby boomers.”

You mean proto-Goth baby boomers, because everyone else in that generation probably saw Dragnet or something. And the only way you can compare it with Twilight is if the latter was a hit subculture comic like Scott Pilgrim, not a series of YA novels.

“You wanna know how DS is gonna perform, go look at the numbers for RED.”

Red had a cast with two prominent male actors who are big with audiences outside of that movie. Dark Shadows is coasting off Depp’s name and the whole vampire fad.

  • nakedman

We all know DZ’s track record on box office, right?

If anybody is taking him seriously please go into the H-E archives and take a look at his Avatar prediction.

    End of story.

  • great scott

Jeff must be completely ignoring this thread. I’m surprised DulozGray and Flash Gordon haven’t been banned and their comments deleted. He’s bounced others outta here for far less. And obviously Paramount doesn’t think Dark Shadows will bomb or they wouldn’t have pushed The Dictator back a week.

  • Chicago48

Bottom line: Emily Blunt will get 5 times more movies than Tariji P. Henson, and Jason Segel will continue to get movie roles more than Michael Ealy can dream of having.
What we need is for a couple of more “black” urban movies to be released this year that bump up against $100Mil — then and only then will Hollywood pay attention.

  • Kakihara

nakedman: “If anybody is taking him seriously please go into the H-E archives and take a look at his Avatar prediction.”

Again, there were a lot of people who thought Avatar would bomb. I’m getting singled out because I mentioned specific numbers.

    great scott:

Gray and Wells are Facebook buddies, so Gray getting banned would probably lead to a lot of awkward wall posts.

And to those interested: Gray has zero pictures of himself in his Facebook profile (funny for a guy who judges others harshly on their appearances); however, he has dozens upon dozens of Obama pictures. So it’s like *that*, I guess.

  • taikwan

Emily Blunt is attractive in more ways than just physical. People seem to love to work with her and based on her interaction with fans/co-stars/festival workers, she will be welcomed in this business for a very long time. Has one Oscar nomination already – so, yes, a very long time.

  • Cadavra

Nobody thought RED would make a nickel, or Warners/DC would not have licensed the comic to Summit. And certainly nobody thought that a movie whose youngest principal cast member was 46 (and oldest 93) would make two nickels. (Willis, Freeman, Mirren, Malkovich et al are huge talents but don’t open movies anymore, if they ever did.) They did not count on the great neglected over-45 crowd that wants to see movies that are fun but not stupid. THAT is the comparison to DARK SHADOWS: a tongue-in-cheek genre film that awakens nostalgia in a certain age group for something they enjoyed when they were young. Depp will bring in some kids, but mark my words: this is really a two-quadrant movie (male and female over 25), and Warners is leaving a lot of money on the floor by not catering to The Base.

  • JBM…

I’m not going to waste my time going to DG’s Facebook profile (having wasted enough time on his tumblr) but I assume he has no photos of himself up because it would compromise his ability as a super-awesome screenwriter. (Whose rewrite ideas for dump-season, thrill-free thrillers were too mindblowing and revolutionary for producers to take seriously.)

  • nakedman

    DZ said

what truth would that be Lex, uh, I mean nakedman?

I said what I had to say, then you dopes did your usual circle jerk. Am I missing something here?

JBM, never said I was a “super awesome screenwriter.” I said I was a writer for film and TV, nothing super or awesome about it. But that’s cool, I understand you guys have this perverse need to make up shit about me or what I said. It’s weird.

And now some of you are stalking my Facebook page? Talk about obsessed losers, you actually take time AWAY FROM THIS SITE to look me up? Good lord you need help.

  • nakedman

It would make you feel better if I was Lex. But no, there really are multiple people on this site that despise you.

You got called out, and you backed away from the thread. You are a chicken shit coward.

  • Kakihara

Cadavra: “Nobody thought RED would make a nickel, or Warners/DC would not have licensed the comic to Summit. ”

Well, in Summit’s defense, WB/DC is the same company which thought Red didn’t have a chance, but bet on The Losers and Green Lantern. I’m not gonna say Summit knows how to pick winners better, because obviously the only reason they’re with Lionsgate now is The Hunger Games. But at least they’re better at casting most of the time than Warner’s/DC.

“(Willis, Freeman, Mirren, Malkovich et al are huge talents but don’t open movies anymore, if they ever did.)”

I’ll agree with you on Mirren and Malkovich, but last time I checked, Willis still made money through Die Hard 4 and even Cop Out, while Freeman did pretty damned well for himself on The Bucket List and Invictus. How do I know it was Freeman who helped Invictus and not Damon? Because it made more money internationally than the average non-Bourne/Oceans Damon movie.

“They did not count on the great neglected over-45 crowd that wants to see movies that are fun but not stupid. THAT is the comparison to DARK SHADOWS”

That’s a bad comparison, because Dark Shadows comes off smart covering up its stupidity. Plus, Red was an action movie, while Dark Shadows looks like it’s talky as hell.

  • nakedman

“Better than the multiple idiots who believed Cameron’s bullshit about 3D being a “gamechanger”. ”

They were still closer than you were.

  • Bob Violence

Google (which indexes this site pretty well, comments included) is unable to find anyone referring to American Reunion as a “flop,” or asserting that it would lose money

on the other hand it easily finds DZ claiming that American Reunion would destroy Titanic 3D (lol) and that Reunion would make back its money quicker (lololololol)

but no doubt the UK, France and Italy will bring in the $190 million needed to catch up to Titanic 3D’s current total, and the tens of millions that will inevitably roll in from the Chinese release will just be icing on the cake

  • Kakihara

Bob: Well, I’ve been mostly right, other than with China. As for making money back quicker, Titanic was on the ropes until it got the Chinese money, so I was right there, as well. I didn’t really buy that $150 million to break even argument, either, because it got its budget back sooner than Titanic 3D, and everything else was gravy. But AR was being called a “failure” because it didn’t make Battleship’s money, even though it’s grossing more than Project X, which was considered a hit. As for Europe, don’t underestimate the continent. American Wedding got its biggest chunk of the $126 m foreign “pie” from that region.

  • Bob Violence

DZ: “China only exists when it is convenient for my dumb argument”

  • Cadavra

Kakihara: Yeah, I should not have included Willis as an “if they ever did.” But INVICTUS is an outlier, partly because Freeman was born to play Mandela, partly because rugby is such a huge sport worldwide and so few films are made about it.

I’ve seen some new clips from SHADOWS. Warners seems to realize they made a bit of a mistake by going overboard on the humor; these clips are mostly serious, and indicate that there will be a fair amount of action (though not of the gunplay variety). As for the movie being “smart covering up the stupid”: Really?

  • DuluozGray
