Flux Capacitor

I don’t know if I want to see another Back to the Future film, but this guy (name?) is obviously sharp, inventive and passionate. So if nothing else he could get a production gig out of this and…you know, be somebody’s whippersnapper. I love the way he exhales after finishing the riff. And by the way, it’s definitely flux capacitor and not flux capacitator.

Wonder if Jeff would be kind enough to tell us what he thought of the sequels. I didn’t like Part II when I saw it in the theatre but now I think it’s the most entertaining of the three.

  • Jeffrey Wells

You can have the sequels. I can”t take that guy who plays Biff. Once was enough. The original was perfect. I saw it at the Cinerma Dome, and I remember the rhythm guitar strums from Huey Lewis and the News’ “Power of Love” throbbing out of the speakers and feeling the vibrations in my ribs.

  • Mr. F.

While I am a fan of the oft-maligned Part 2… Wells is right: the original really IS “perfect.” Such a finely constructed script from start to finish.

Still wish that all the “Eric Stoltz as Marty” footage made it out into the public domain…

  • shefhammer

I found him a little annoying to be honest.

Love BTTF though. Definite A+ movie. Even love the sequels.

  • Kakihara

I’m in the minority in liking the trilogy. But then the second BTTF was still a lot more enjoyable than the second Indiana Jones film. Anyway, if they couldn’t get anything new or interesting out of that short-lived animated series, then this franchise is dead in the water. And don’t think Uni hasn’t considered rebooting it, either. I remember a rumour just a few years back of Fox actually returning to it.

  • moviesquad

Someone who loves Back to the Future as much as this guy shouldn’t be giving Hollywood any ideas about how to reboot it. They need to stay away… far away… or else we are going to get Taylor Lautner as Marty.

  • moviesquad

Oh, and as far as his idea goes, it sounds like the concept they’d use to make a seriers of Direct to Video Back to the Future spinoffs without the original cast.

  • JD

The first movie came out when I was a kid and I saw it many, many times. I also used to think it had a perfect script and all that… but after seeing it again recently, I realized it’s an incredibly simple, schematic screenplay. The performances are great and Zemeckis really brings it to life, but every moment serves as some kind of narrative setup or payoff, undermining the actors’ spontaneity and serving as an ominous warning of the dead-eyed technical exercises Zemeckis would obsess over in the decades that followed. The second film is inferior, but it’s refreshingly playful and uninhibited by comparison. The first film is all caution and pre-digested narrative effects, whereas the second film gets sort of irreverent, self-indulgent and surprising. It’s sloppy and unsatisfying as a narrative (aka not formulaic), but it leaves the audience with room for some independent thought.

  • JeffK

I’m sure Zemeckis already has an idea that involves going back to 1985, and all the actors can reprise their roles using his “dead eye motion capture children of the corn” technology.

  • Movie Watcher

I liked the first one, but the second one edged it out.

  • Dave

if they really want to reboot they don’t have to think about it nearly this much.

dig the weird look the guy gives at the end though.

  • Krillian

I think of Back to the Future and its sequels the same way I think of The Matrix and its sequels. The first ones were classic. The sequels drain and diminish them.

  • Rashad

No they don’t, and in the case of the 3rd Matrix, it’s on par with the first.

BTTF is a perfect movie, and doesn’t need any reboot. If he’s such a fan, let it be. I fucking hate these people who can’t let anything go.

  • lazarus

The second one has some pretty ingenious and elaborate plotting w/r/t time travel, and I’m actually surprised the studio released something that potentially confusing.

The third one was more straightforward, and because of that, the weakest of the series. But it’s a much better part three than Last Crusade or Return of the Jedi, and the series is a lot more consistent because of it, without a huge drop in quality.

  • DavidF

    @Rashad
“in the case of the 3rd Matrix, it’s on par with the first. ”

No – this thing you say is very untrue.

As for Back to the Future; the first is a stone classic. The second has some real flaws (including fake Crispin Glover and pointless Elizabeth Shue) but its construction is very daring for a genre sequel. The little Joe Flaherty ending is great too.

My mileage varies with part III since some of the joke repetition (like Biff running into the manure) gets to be a bit too on the nose, but it’s still a fun conclusion to the whole thing. A lot of popcorn trilogies (like The Matrix!) could learn something from the 3 BTTF films, warts and all.

  • lazarus

Ahh, glad you pointed out that final scene from Part 2. Definitely one of the cooler set-up cliffhangers I’ve ever scene.

Whereas the DUM-DUM-DUM! ending of The Matrix Reloaded was so corny.

  • Ray

I hated hated HATED Back to the Future II.

Not for itself- for itself, it’s a fine movie- but because it was the first movie I recall seeing that existed solely as a TRAILER for the third movie.

I remember seeing it, getting to the end, getting a card slapped on the end of the movie telling me to wait for the third film, and I was like, “WAIT, WHAT? I SPENT TWO HOURS HERE FOR NOTHING?!?”

I like complete stories. Cliffhangers are welcome, but BTTF 2 went too far.

    Ugh. STILL hate it.

  • lazarus

Parts two and three were conceived together, filmed back to back, and released six months apart. So this isn’t like “Oh, we made you pay to sit here for two hours, and now you have to wait THREE YEARS to see what happens!”

I mean, did you get pissed watching The Empire Strikes Back, which had just as big of a cliffhanger? Or The Two Towers? Same thing.

  • Rashad

The way BTTF 2 weaves itself into the first film is ingenious.

  • BobbyLupo

“I can”t take that guy who plays Biff.”

That’s nuts. Tom Wilson in BTTF3 is amazing.

My problem with BTTF2 is that they’ve got a time machine, the writers can take them literally anywhere in the entire timeframe of humanity, and they choose to send them back to the one place we’ve already seen Marty go.
