Comedians are only funny while they’re on the outside, hungry, looking in. THIS IS FORTY is on the opposite end of that spectrum. That song in the trailer gave me hives.
THE REAL MILKMAN SAYS…
Who the fuck is Ira Parks?
i’m not feeling it. then again i wasn’t feeling knocked up and it turned out to be ok.
The Tom Conti in The Duellists look doesn’t do Paul Rudd any favors, but his previous run at this character is easily his best performance.
What’s the over/under on when he wears out his welcome? (Rudd, I mean)
I’d say soon without a major step up in his game. At least he hasn’t wasted his Jack Lemmon potential quite as much as Jason Bateman.
Agree with both DiscoNap comments. Bateman and Rudd are awesome when they’re working with a good script since they generally react off other people. Rudd’s deadpanning off Rogen and Mann in Knocked-Up made basically willed that movie into being “very good” instead of decent/nice/fine. Here;s hoping he does it again and Apatow rebounds. The lack of Sandler helps.
Apatow, doesn’t rebound until he writes and directs a flick completely devoid of immediately family. Enough.
I don’t consider myself a rabid Apatow fanboy (I don’t see most of the satellite collaborator’s films), but am I the only one who has really enjoyed ALL his directing efforts?
Still confounded by all the hate thrown at Funny People. Better written than 99% than the rest of the comedy coming out of Hollywood.
And Storm, considering no one else is giving Leslie Mann great roles, I’m happy to see her husband put her talents on display again and again.
Absent from the trailer is the sweet subplot (I’m not joking) where Rudd’s character stakes his money on resurrecting the career of 70’s Brit rocker Graham Parker, and Apatow, a fan, cast Parker to appear in the movie as himself – apparently in a larger than usual role, as the musician was shooting scenes for a couple of weeks – alongside his recently reunited band The Rumour. Parker joked to Rolling Stone magazine that his role served as a useful metaphor for failure, but Parker’s small, fervent fan-base has been over the moon about it for several months (with a long delayed Kickstarter documentary on Parker put back to capture him walking the red carpet later this year.) Parker also did some songs for the soundtrack,
*didn’t intend a comma after Apatow
Mann is fine. It’s just lazy on Apatow’s part.
“Who the fuck is Ira Parks?
haha LoL I know right!
OK, I thought it was funny. When I was 40, back in ’98, my kids were about 10, so I can relate to some of it. I don’t mind Mann in it, but I’m afraid the accolades will go to McCarthy, so I hope Mann, and even Rudd, gets some positive reviews, so we’ll wait and see.
Love Apatow. Love Rudd. Apatow makes movies that the general public can relate to. He’s not trying to be the next Woody Allen. He’s great, and you all know it.
Albert Brooks ans Chris O’Dowd are in this too
All these movies are bleeding together. Comfortably situated (even when they’re supposed to be poor like Rogen in Knocked Up), southern California types struggling with 1/3 to mid life crises with same flatly shot visual sheen. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy them when I finally see them, but they’ve become impossible to actively “anticipate.”
Surely Jeff has something to say about Jason Segel playing a fitness coach in this movie?
BoulderKid, except they aren’t all shot the same.
Perhaps you failed to notice Janusz Kaminsky’s work on Funny People, which looked a lot different than Apatow’s other films.
Still haven’t seen Funny People laz.
I don’t see Rudd going out of fashion, although I don’t see him ever becoming a first-tier star, either. Women love him – he seems to have taken the place of Lloyd Dobler/John Cusack as their dream boyfriend, now that Cusack’s assholiness is common knowledge.

Apatow has entered his Rob Reiner years earlier than expected.
