So Ed Norton is the chief bad guy, eh? This looks better than fairly good. Renner has never underwhelmed (I thought he was more interesting — readable — than Tom Cruise in MI:4: Ghost Protocol) and he has the physical chops down. I don’t see any problems except that it feels like The Bourne Ultimatum again. Which is what the trailer guys want you to think, of course. Same but different.
Will director Tony Gilroy tumble for the good old reliable Paul Greengrass shakycam? Director of photography Robert Elswit shot Michael Clayton, There Will Be Blood, The Town, Salt, Ghost Protocol — can’t go wrong there. John Gilroy (Michael Clayton) is editing. This is going to be just fine.
On 5.17 an IMDB person professing to be a non-vested civilian said he/she saw Legacy in Woodland Hills and wrote the following: “This movie occurs concurrently with Ultimatum so you may want to rewatch that before going. There is a lot of reference to what happens in the previous movies that you may be lost if you can’t follow along. Opening credits say it’s 2007. They are tracking Bourne when they decide to off all nine program participants. It is because of Bourne’s ridiculousness that he’s caused that they decide to off everyone and create the ‘Larx project’. Aaron Cross (Renner) is one of the ‘nine’ they decide to off. This is why it’s the ‘Bourne Legacy’. His actions have caused the dismantling of the program.

When does Renner start getting the same heat as Liam Neeson for becoming a talent-squandering genre-movie whore?
As a stand alone film it looks pretty good, but I’m sort of doubting that Jeremy Renner will have the clout with audiences to make this a hit in the way Universal is hoping for. If it is successful Renner will be in three franchises at once, the others being The Avengers and Mission Impossible. These things tend to work themselves out sort of like when Terminator Salvation underperformed so Bale wasn’t going to pull double duty for the foreseeable future as both John Connor and Batman. Ditto for GWTDT doing relatively well but not so much so that Fincher and company are jumping to make the other two adaptations whereby Craig would be Bond and Bloomquist for multiple films concurrently.

Compare the folks involved with Renner’s “genre projects” to Neeson’s. Compare the scripts, the roles, everything.
Given the differences, I think Renner will need to actually take a mis-step before people equate his work with Neeson’s talent-squandering…
I can’t believe the star and cinematographer gave up PTA for this movie.
After seeing some trailers during the past week, really happy that Renner passed on The Master. … Cannot see him in the role that Phoenix now owns.

cyanic: Not sure Elswit was PTA’s first choice for The Master. I think he actually wanted to go another direction with the look, tho I could be wrong.
This thread lead me to perusing Neeson’s IMDB page and he’s credited in “The Dark Knight Rises.” I was unaware that his character from the first film played in to the DKR? It’ll be interesting to see if it’s essentially just a cameo or an actual role. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him figure heavily in to the film as Nolan seems almost obsessed with connecting everything through elaborate plotting.
Be funny if the MTV movie awards had a “best rogue government badass” category this past year and Jeremy Renner filled every slot.
Or most thankless supporting role. For as many things as it did right, Whedon short changed Renner/Hawkeye spectacularly in “The Avengers”.

I can only trust that my favorite screenwriter is skillful enough not to have let that happen. I’ll see it regardless, but still…

Concurrently, huh? That’s a neat angle.
Kinda bummed about the “no Damon cameo” bit, though. Seems like it’d make a lot of sense to tie this in at the end with Ultimatum, and lead into a “team up” movie next.
(Speaking of team ups…. I’m still holding out for the inspired stroke of genius that would enlist Pierce Brosnan as a “rogue 007″ vs. Daniel Craig’s Bond, finally explaining why Dench is in both damn series).

Evidently, Marion Cotillard is playing Neeson’s daughter Talia al-Ghul (the whole “Miranda Tate”-thing simply being a smokescreen), which makes the rumors that Neeson shot at least one flashback-scene with Cotillard fairly credible.
Plus, we also have definite confirmed pics from the set with the Neeson-lookin’ Josh Pence and the Cotillard-lookin’ Joey King as the even-younger Ra’s and Talia (in other flashbacks).
Can’t wait to see audiences’ reactions when it’s revealed that Talia, not Bane, is the real “boss” villain of the film.

So they’re pulling that Curse of the Pink Panther shit with Damon where they imply he’s still in it? Reeks of desperation.
Not sure this trailer is all that good. Lots of fun character actor stuff, but Renner seems weirdly sidelined in his own movie. Bourne mentioned every ten seconds and even a picture of Matt Damon on screen in case we forgot which Jason Bourne they were referring to. If you’re going to recast a franchise, surely you should focus on the new lead and endear him to audiences in advance? It’d be like Casino Royale trailers featuring subliminal shots of Pierce Brosnan.
I want to see Jason Bourne wrapped up in bandages for the whole movie until the end when he takes them off and it’s Roger Moore.
