Orange Couch
SPOILER ALERT: Peggy leaving agency, Joan sleeping with fat creep and becoming a partner, etc. It hurts to miss Mad Men as it happens fresh. As we speak I haven’t downloaded The Other Woman off iTunes yet, but I’ve bought the previous episodes I missed over the last three weeks.
Wait, you watched the recap before watching the episode? Jesus, Wells.
In any event, it’s the best episode since “The Suitcase.” Really amazing.
Ah, unforgiveable spoilers in the first sentence. That’s the Wells we love/hate.
The spoilers are a fucking drag, but I watch MAD MEN on dvd so I’ll probably have forgotten them by the time I get to this episode. It would be nice if Jeff at least put them after the jump, but in the end it’s on me because I keep reading this site.
Fat spoilers there for those who haven’t yet watched the latest episode…
Anybody who watches the re-cap before viewing the episode ain’t gonna care about deploying, for you, two gigantic plot-bombs. In the first two sentences. Less than a day after the show ran.
While we’re at it, on “Girls,” David Mamet’s daughter smoked crack and went bottom-less.
An insanely great season of Mad Men keeps rolling along. Draper’s gut punch look when Joan walked into the partners meeting was really powerful..ditto Lane’s reaction after they left the room. Can’t think of any show on TV (granted I don’t watch a lot of TV) that allows so many interesting dialogue free reveals.
Wells, you really are an ass sometimes.
This series is going to end with Pete dying in a fiery car crash, right?
In this episode, the piece de resistance is the great moment between Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss during Peggy’s “goodbye shake.” Watch it and tell me if there has been a greater acting moment on television this year – well, Claire Danes had one on “Homeland” that came close, but Hamm and Moss have insane SILENT chemistry.
That and the last shot of Peggy…get ready…
Dude those are fucking spoilers. What the hell is wrong with you?
Great episode but that goddam empty elevator shaft is like the russian in the Soprano’s right now it is hanging like the sword of Damacles over the entire show so that anytime anyone punches that down button it could be their last ride. i thought it might be Peggy’s turn last night. Will Weiner ever pull the trigger? or just do a David Chase.
Great, great episode last night.
SPOILERS
The expression on Don’s face when the Jaguar call came was perfect. Success may come to SCDP, but at what cost?
I guess that elevator shaft could also be called a contract negtiator.
I always like a good slert.
Pretty interesting theory that “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band” is serving as a template for this season:
http://yinews.wordpress.com/2012/05/24/611/
That’s one heckuva poor spoiler alert! I mean: couldn’t you have put,”SPOILERS FOR MAD MEN:” at the start of the post? Of course you could. So..why didn’t you?
Could it have anything to do with the healthy number of talkbacks you’ve elicited as a result? Could the reason really be that..basic? Because that doesn’t really suggest that you think very highly of your readership, sir!
“Because that doesn’t really suggest that you think very highly of your readership, sir! ”
No offense, but are you new here? Jeff has contempt for just about everybody, including his readers. He won’t even respond to these comments because he knows it was an indefensible dick move.
While we’re at it, on “Girls,” David Mamet’s daughter smoked crack and went bottom-less.
Was watching “Girls” from a distance at a get-together last night, talking to a couple of other people, and I *thought* Zosia looked bottomless, but I was having to squint too hard to be 100% sure.
But yeah…whoever called last night’s “Mad Men” episode as being the best since “The Suitcase” was spot-on — there’s a cross-cut sequence in particular that’s every bit as effective and awesome as Don’s “Carousel” speech in Season 1.
But damn, Jeff, having the final Joan-reveal spoiled by that recap…still, it’s a fantastic episode, no matter how you finally get to see it.
This grown man wept last night when the mad man kissed the woman’s hand. Wept.
And the last time I wept over art, Dick Cheney was president.
A man who spoils a big plot point for other people is a twat. But is there a word for a man who spoils it for himself? A “Twells?” I dunno.
@nakedman No, I’ve been here and hereabouts for years. But still I manage to be astounded by how cavalier Wells in deliberately antagonising/alienating his readership. It appears for all intents and purposes that he actively wants to be disliked. But is that actually the case? Or is he (as I suspect) more of an Alan Partridge type; unwittingly making faux pas all over the place?!
That was a metaphysical elevator shaft, not chekov’s.
Peter discovers Lane’s chicanery, fakes a car crash which is blamed on poor British wiring, and runs off with Don’s secretary.
Not everything is foreshadowing, you know.
“Wells, you really are an ass sometimes. ”
SOMETIMES????
You know SCRATCH THAT: I’m FUCKING THRILLED Jeff doesn’t enjoy watching the shows I like. If I had to put up with random Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad spoilers SMACKING MY FACE above the fold, I’d want to punch Jeff in his gunt too.
“But still I manage to be astounded by how cavalier Wells in deliberately antagonising/alienating his readership.”
Because they keep coming back for more maybe? Honestly, Wells’ traffic is only getting better and has shown only growth in the past five years. So?
You know, I’ll never understand the whole spoiler-whiner thing. It’s not like that was a huge surprise or anything. That isn’t what made the episode great, that it was a surprise. Everyone was talking about it the next day, so why should Wells have to wait? I agree that a warning is at least fair but you know, is it really that big of a deal?
Sasha,
Yes, it is a big deal. Just put a warning first, which Wells eventually did.
Thanks for spoiling it, Man-Boobs! Good job! Fuckin’ idiot.
Sasha, you are entirely wrong in this matter.
Would you be upset if someone revealed that Darth Vader was Luke’s father? That revelation isn’t the reason the film is considered great, but it sure as hell is something you don’t want to spoil for those who haven’t seen it yet.
Use some common sense. Jesus.
i’ve never quite understood wells’ desire to ‘spoil’ movies and tv shows but i’ve also never quite understood the level of vitriol when it happens….what, exactly, is the acceptable length of time before an episode of a popular tv show can be discussed?…and, who made that decision?…..if one really, really cares that much then watch the show when it airs…if you can’t, then stay off line until you can….
i got chewed out by lexg once for mentioning a plot point in a series that ended eight months earlier because he hadn’t had the chance to watch the dvd release yet….really…this is a tv show…
Scooterzz,
I don’t think it’s too much to ask to wait at least a few days. A lot of people are busy with their kids or going out at night or whatever else people do and can’t get to the show when it airs.
And is it so difficult to put SPOILER in your review/post/headline?
If someone ignores the spoiler warning then they don’t have a valid complaint.
I have always thought Mad Men was/is a great series but rated Breaking Bad higher in the pantheon of great series with The Wire #1 & The Sopranos #2. But, damn I would have never thought that 5th(!) season of Mad Men would be its best ranking over excellent seasons of Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Homeland(!), and Justified. If I had to give awards for dramatic series out, they would be as follows:
Supporting Actor: Giancarlo Esposito for Breaking Bad (hands the most frightening 10 minutes of the television year were his mostly silent appearance in the premiere episode)
Supporting Actress: Christina Hendricks. I believe she wins the Emmy with her look as she disrobes for the Jaguar client…just play that tape of that scene
Lead Actress: Claire Danes for Homeland: head and shoulders work above everyone in television this year except for ….
Lead Actor (& Actor of the Year with the greatest Acting Moment of the Year): the great, underrated Damian Lewis for Homeland; If you want to look at acting at its highest level, look at the moment in the series finale where he is recording his confessional videotape in full Marine garb…he portrays so many emotions/feelings/sides to that character and he is playing off no other actor except himself….Amazing performance from an actor who really should be better known.
Writing: The Weekend episode for Homeland->overall Mad Men/Breaking Bad had better writing over the course of the season, but Homeland reset the expectations for the series brilliantly in this episode.
Directing: Neil Marshall for Game of Thrones’ BlackWater -> one of the best directing in episodic television in the history of the medium
Series: Mad Men-an amazing 5th season just over brilliant seasons by Homeland, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones & Justified
Scooterzz,
I don’t pretend to know the standard for talking about spoiler points either, but Mad Men aired, at the time of this thread posting, less than 24 hours ago. That surely is not enough time, especially given that it is a holiday weekend and many people are out of town and haven’t had the chance to watch it on their DVRs yet.
yeah, i just don’t agree… it’s television and fair game for discussion after air…if you can’t/won’t watch first run, then stay away from sites that do… i also don’t get the angst…knowing the titanic actually sank didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the film… more often than not, i’ve read the book used as source material for the movie i’m seeing…it really just doesn’t matter…
Why does the fact that it’s television make any difference whatsoever?
In the age of Netflix, Hulu, DVR, and OnDemand, that is a terrible argument.
In addition, nobody is saying don’t post spoilers. But for the love of God, give a warning beforehand. Only after the fact did Wells issue a warning.
And comparing big plot developments to the Titanic hitting the iceberg in terms of spoilers is as lazy and asinine an argument as you can get.
Mad Men isn’t based on any particular source material. It isn’t a self-contained episode like most sitcoms for police/crime dramas. This is Sopranos-style storytelling over the course of an entire season and many years. Spoiling big plot points, especially in last night’s development heavy episode, is a big no-no.
“yeah, i just don’t agree… it’s television and fair game for discussion after air…if you can’t/won’t watch first run, then stay away from sites that do… i also don’t get the angst…knowing the titanic actually sank didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the film… more often than not, i’ve read the book used as source material for the movie i’m seeing…it really just doesn’t matter…”
Okay, cool, it doesn’t matter to you. But yours isn’t the only opinion that matters. Spoilers matters to many of us. It’s merely a matter of being respectful to people that have lives, can’t always watch a show as it airs, but still want to visit a blog without having the show ruined.
Again, is it difficult to write SPOILER WARNING? I’m not understanding why it is more difficult to include a spoiler warning than having your readers pissed off.
And the Titanic example is ridiculous. Chinatown couldn’t have been ruined? Fight Club? The Sixth Sense?
While the spoilers given for Mad Men weren’t as extreme as the movies I just listed, they still gave away major plot points.
Jeff knows the spoiler rules. Jeff knows what’s expected of him. Jeff knows how to behave in polite society.
Jeff just doesn’t care because he enjoys being a DICK more than he enjoys being polite.
After LITERALLY YEARS of this, that’s the answer here.
Jeff will be the FIRST person to call out other people for behaving badly in public- people laughing at jokes, people having fun around him, people enjoying themselves are ALL INCONSIDERATE PARTY ELEPHANT ASSHOLES, but when Jeff wants to watch the world burn, why, it’s WE who have the problem, not HE.
