No Cabs

Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus screens at 10 am this morning (100 minutes from now) at the Village Cinemas Andel at Radlicka 3179/1E, which is a few blocks south and across the river. A nice 30 or 40 minute stroll. Maybe hit a cafe on my way back and write something. “Get Alien out of your head first,” says Harry Knowles. “This is something different.”

  2. I caught Prometheus here in the UK a few hours ago at a midnight screening and have to say that I was impressed. The word on the early reviews you had mentioned a few days ago had me worried but I’m glad to say I think they are unfounded.

    Its an intelligent sci-fi story which doesn’t betray the spirit of the first Alien film, and I think its design and atmosphere compliment the original very well. Another thing it has in its favour is its ability to take its time arriving where it want’s to get to, the story has room to breath rather than being a constant onslaught like a high proportion of recent sci-fi.

    Fassbender & Rapace give very strong performances and are well supported by most of the cast. The only performance I didn’t think worked was Charlize Theron, although that may be due to her character being slightly underwritten.

  4. craigeduk – did you see it in 3D?

    I’m torn between seeing PROMETHEUS in 2D and 3D, so I’m interested to know if it’s worth the extra.

  5. I saw it in 3D Imax which i’ve not bothered with for any other releases. I’m no fan of normal 3D but the IMAX 3D was exceptional for this.

  6. Wells, how about a short write up on Barrandov Studios? It’s only a mile or two down the river from this screening. I’ve never been but it has serious history. Your piece on Babelsberg a few weeks back was one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a while.

  9. Saw it in 3-D and didn’t find it “great and bright” actually, though it was nice looking. Removed my glasses several times and considerable uptick in brightness without them. On the whole, a mixed bag. Rapace and Fassbender were effective and the hardware is impressive. But the story didn’t get me and the deep-think ruminations on the origin of the species struck me as more SyFy than sci-fi. Charlize Theron is one-note and wasted. And as for “putting Alien out of your head,” that’s a pretty tall order for an admitted “prequel” with none of the poetry, menace or art that Scott’s 1979 original delivered. But loved Rapace and her surgery pod sequence — the best in the film.
