I can’t tell if Nick Wrigley or Gary W. Tooze or some other contributor wrote DVD Beaver’s review of Fox Home Video’s new Grapes of Wrath Bluray, but the key statement, for me, is “there is…more information shown in the frame on all 4 sides.” Notice the three telephone poles on the left side of the DVD screen capture (top) of Tom Joad (Henry Fonda) walking along a country road, and then count the poles in the same image from the Bluray below it….four!

What I don’t understand is why did the person who mastered the previous DVD crop the image in the first place? There are four telephone poles in this shot, so why not show four telephone poles? What kind of professional would say to him or herself, “You know something? Three telephones poles are enough. Who needs four? What difference does it make? Eff the fourth pole!”

The review states that “the 1080p better shows the contrast with layering that brings out the strong density of the source. Significant amounts of detail are now visible that were black masses on the SD-DVD. The Grapes of Wrath has plenty of sequences shot in very low lighting and these greatly benefit from being rendered via the Blu-ray transfer. Fox’s dual-layering with high bitrate has provided a dramatically brighter and richer video presentation.”

In short, added visual info turns me on as much higher resolution, greater detail and “surprising depth,” etc.

  4. Zooming in on all four sides to make sure the image filled any CRT monitor was common practice by telecine operators for decades. It’s the same reason they removed the mattes on 1.85 films. It’s another travesty that’s been fixed in the Blu-ray area.

    You’ve been watching Grapes of Wrath with only three poles for decades. It’s not correct, but that’s the way it played on Grandfather’s Television. I’m surprised that you’re okay with this fourth pole, Wells.

One of the signal features of Jeff’s contempt for the dweeb/monk class that oppresses him so is his dogged refusal to even make an attempt to learn the names of the players involved, where they actually work, what they actually do. Hence, his confusion over whether a DVD Beaver review was written by “Nick Wrigley” or “Gary Tooze.” As it happens Nick Wrigley is the founder of the “Masters of Cinema” website and a co-founder of the U.K.-based Eureka/Masters of Cinema DVD label, and he recently stepped down as head of that label. He has zero, that is, NO, affiliation with the DVD Beaver website, which was founded by Gary Tooze. Wrigley IS quoted in the review, which in fact is signed by Gary Tooze. What does Jeff care, these guys don’t even comp him review copies. Oh, wait, wasn’t Jeff comped on the “Touch of Evil” Blu-ray? If so, that’s gratitude for you.

    And indeed, the error in the older versions is likely attributable to the practice CC Baxter cites, which Jeff could have probably found out for himself if he didn’t prefer the voices in his head to actual research.

  7. Wells to Kenny: You may be right but I don’t think so. Doctor, my eyes have seen the years and the slow parade of fears, and the ONLY friggin’ name I see listed on DVD Beaver’s Grapes of Wrath Bluray review is Nick Wrigley’s, twice, in the form of an acknowledgement and a “thanks, Nick!” for allowing a reprint. (It’s conceivable that Quigley signed off on this before Tooze posted.) If Tooze’s name is on this piece it may be necessary to have a magnifying glass and the patience of Job to find it. Figuring out who wrote what shouldn’t require this much work. Tooze’s layouts of his reviews are always a pain in the ass.

    Wells to C.C. Baxter: Your statement that “zooming in on all four sides to make sure the image filled any CRT monitor was common practice by telecine operators for decades” is true, of course, but you’re 100% dead wrong in declaring that “removing the mattes on 1.85 films [is] another travesty that’s been fixed in the Blu-ray area.” I have always advocated for more visual information in a mastering of any film — tops, bottoms, sides — hence my worship of boxy images, which keep tops and bottoms that the 1.85 fascists are always cropping out. Let it all in, let there be light and space and freedom, open it up, more telephone poles, boxy is beautiful, and death to the fascist insect that preys upon the composition. Ansel Adams and I park our cars in the same garage.

  10. I’m going to back Wells up on who wrote the piece at Beaver; Gary’s name is at the very bottom of the page, but it’s not clear whether he’s signing the review or making a personal request for donations.

    Which brings me to the fact that while DVD Beaver provides an invaluable service, the site is an aesthetic disaster.
