I’ve agreed to submit to a kind of monk-like withdrawal from the hurly burly for three days — Tuesday, 5.29 through Thursday, June 1. Never mind why. Suffice that while I’ve had the occasional sluggish day since HE went hourly-daily in April 2006, I’ve taken no days off during that time. So I’ll be mostly off the treadmill for these three days, but to keep things going I thought I’d offer HE readers a shot at running an essay or a review or any kind of rant or recollection or looking-forward piece — you name it as long as it has something to do with features or Blurays.
Just keep submissions to 1000 words or less, and please send photos to go along with the article, sized to 460 pixels wide. Send them to me today and tomorrow, and they’ll start posting on Tuesday. If you’re a journalist and want to double-post a new article on HE as well as your own site, fine — just make it special. Anyone can say anything except for LexG-type stuff about libidinal matters. And absolutely no rightwing pro-Romney stuff of any kind.
In fact, that’s a topic to write about. Now that the 2012 campaign is about to kick in to full gear I’m thinking it’s time for another Stalinist purge of all Duluoz Gray-like hammerhead rightwing contributors. I did this in ’08 as I just couldn’t stand providing a forum for conservative scum, and I would be able to stand it this year either. What does everyone think about this? Throw the bums out or let it ride?

A new Stalinist Purge makes no sense whatsoever. Since the last SP, the political threads are about the only ones that get decent comment counts. But take away the conservative (or pretending to be conservative) pot-stirrers, and the comments on the political threads would drop to nothing. Doesn’t take long to say “dittos.”
As to the guest lecturer question, since a certain comment-magnet was the only commenter that routinely wrote about “libidinal matters,” it’s fairly clear what’s going on here. It’s like the archery tournament in Robin Hood. I guess the overall lack of interest in the Cannes coverage has been an eye-opener. Although, a lot of the pre-SP folks seemed to enjoy it.
First they came for the conservatives, and I did not speak because I was not a conservative.
Surely this would be the perfect opportunity for some sort of LexG summer preview/review so far?
Nearly four years after backing a failed presidency, your response to those who had a different take is to purge them? Other possible responses:
– “I was in the tank for Obama four years ago and used my site to pump up a candidate I imagined would fulfill every item on my political wish list, but it turns out I was completely wrong about the president’s ability to effectively govern.”
– “Although I don’t support the GOP, I now recognize that McCain supporters might have had legitimate concerns about Obama.”

Discman: The huge flop is not in the White House, but the Congress. The five year-olds who run that place are the ones who have brought this country to its knees. The president doesn’t make laws, Congress does, in case you’ve forgotten how it all works. Have you heard the “thoughts” and “reasoning” coming out of the House and Senate over the last four years? Those supporting a purge almost certainly weren’t around prior to the last one. This site became about 60% less interesting, almost overnight. And it wasn’t just the conservatives that Jeff purged that left. Some of the best liberal commenters wandered away as the character of the conversation changed and became monotonously predictable.
It’s really a shame. This site was on he cusp of becoming what Jeffrey dreamed it could be. Then the purge happened and it’s been a shadow of its former self ever since.

I am pretty far left of centre in my political views but I’m afraid to say Nakedman that many of your posts do make me cringe. Your approach to debating is often infantile, reactionary and melodramatic.
If there is to be another cull, I’d like to see Jeff differentiate between those who are hateful and offensive (like Duluoz), and those who are mostly reasonable but come from a political standpoint that many of us disagree with (such as Travis). Banning the latter seems heavy handed to me, and would stifle debate to the detriment of the site.

I said “mostly” reasonable. Certainly when set against you, which you make sure is usually the case. And I’m an Occupy supporter who just voted Green in the London mayoral election, so as far as the political arguments go, I’d be much happier if you came off in a better light.

Dullardz, only dating members of your own race isn’t necessarily racist; finding everyone of a particular race “gross” IS. The two aren’t the same thing–this is what we call a false equivalency. Someone could have myriad reasons why they choose to date within their race–the choice is “racial” but not necessarily “racist.” In other words, you can date exclusively within your own race without finding other races “gross” or inferior, like you do. I think race-based dating is silly because the concept of race is, genetically speaking, bullshit. Any biologist or anthropologist will tell you that, genetically, race just doesn’t exist. There are more differences WITHIN any particular race than there are BETWEEN races. A black American probably has more in common, genetically, with a white American than he does with a Kenyan.
Of course, this isn’t to say that racism doesn’t exist. It obviously does and you’re a prime example of it. Stop throwing out these red herrings. No one here was talking about racial exclusivity when it comes to dating–WTF does that have to do with anything?–and you can say you find some white chicks who are hairy “gross” but you also said that you find “dark chicks gross.” Not some.
