Relationship-wise Tom Cruise isn’t much of a stayer, but then who is? Most couples last five to ten years, longer if they have kids. Cruise’s relationships have mostly tended to last three to six years. Rebecca DeMornay, ’83 to ’85, was the shortest but they were both young. Mimi Rogers was just under three years (May ’87 to February ’90). Cruise’s one long-term relationship was with Nicole Kidman, lasting just over 10 years from ’90 to ’01. Penelope Cruise was…what, two and half or three years, ’01 to ’04? And now the Katie Holmes marriage is toast after six…okay, seven years if you count courtship.
Tom and Katie have a daughter together, Suri, and she’ll be the basis of their post-marital bond for the rest of their lives. It’s no biggie. We all move on, renew, find new oil, rebuild, join new health clubs, re-finance, re-adapt.
if memory serves, cruise’s marriage to kidman lasted just UNDER ten years in order for the pre-nup to stay in effect… it lent kind of a sinister aspect to the way the whole thing was handled….
Jeff…I’m assuming you’re doing deeply ironic tongue-in-cheek here…discussing this as if it’s a run of the mill actor-actress break-up….since the most popular perception of this event is deliriously melodramatic….(almost a movie script)…as in…sweetly naive young starlet finally makes her escape from a cult-addled, control-freak psychotic…(can’t wait for the film version….Selena Gomez as Katie…and as Cruise…(well, the same bunch of guys who are vying for the role of the “Fifty Shades Of Gray” lead)
I would have loved to have seen what Kubrick would have done with TomKat on film.
When they got married, a friend from Toledo who knows her family told me that Holmes signed a contract to be married for a specified number of years. We all made fun of him. Now I wonder…

Meh, Holmes was just a Stepford Wife, anyway. It’s probably for the best, anyway, because it’s hard to wash out the taint of being married to someone who starred in Jack and Jill unironically.

I know you have a lot of friends in the industry Jeff and can’t make said claims on your site, but you don’t really believe they were in love and married for that reason do you? This was the end of the contract as mentioned above. He will take 2-3 yrs off, be linked to a couple 20-30 something starlets and then marry again in say 2017-2020 for another half decade, could be sooner if the gay rumors pick up again.
He should come out and see if the public willingly embraces him again.

I think that is by far his best play, its not like he doing rom coms or has had any interesting chemistry onscreen with a woman in a decade. He’d be the poster boy for GLAAD forever and the first signifcant male icon to come out ever right. There’s never been an openly gay superstar athlete or leading man that I can remember.
Its not like all acting jobs will disappear for him forever, he is a strong actor and appears to be aging relatively well. His iconic status alone could carry him to get parts until his seventies.

Cruise’s proclivities were well-known on the MI:2 set in Sydney a decade or more ago.
At least he has more common sense than Travolta, who can’t seem to help himself when it comes to helping himself to the help.
Katie’s contract was up. Simple as that.
The truth is that Cruise has never ever worked in anything remotely romantic on screen. The general,public has always questioned his sexuality. We in the gay community have been long praying for him to come out, start dating Travolta, and have sex on screen.
Holmes and company are all beards. One of them will eventually talk.

My coke dealer used to deal to Cher back in the early 80s. One time he made a house call, and when he showed up, Cher told him to come upstairs. When he opened the bedroom door, there was Cher, another man (wasn’t famous), and a young Tom Cruise, fresh off of Taps, face down on Cher’s bed, fast asleep, surrounded by a pile of strap-on dildos of different shapes and sizes. This story is apropos of nothing. I just wanted to share.
And by the way, I love gay people. My dad is gay. I just don’t understand why stars like Revolta and The Cruiser have to keep playing charades. You say that Middle America, their core audience, won’t love them anymore if they find out their gay? Well, they don’t really love them anymore anyway, despite their best efforts to hide it, so why hide it. Fuck em. Unless, of course, Revolta and The Cruiser are so in love with the personas they have created for themselves (with a lot of help) that to giving up those personas is tantamout to a kind of existential suicide. I have the feeling that might be the case.
Maybe she got tired of Scientology, or she didn’t want the kid to be sucked in. Her, Kidman and Rogers should get together and swap notes.

So is Cruise definitely gay? Obviously the HE consensus so far is a yes, but I’ve heard so many contrasting reports over the years. Are there any genuine Hollywood insiders here that can give a definitive answer? Don Murphy around?
FWIW, the Andrew Morton book, which dug up plenty of seamy stories about his private life and Scientology, could not find evidence that Cruise was gay.
A friend of my mom’s was a teacher at the elementary school where Cruise and Kidman’s children went. She said that while Kidman was cold and reserved, Cruise was a very involved, kind guy who was genuinely concerned about his kids’ education. Nothing to do with his sexual orientation obviously, but it made me refrain from bashing the guy based on his persona. Plus, he’s a BOSS actor.
Jesse: Yeah, that’s kind of what I’ve heard too. There are dozens of stories about him, but nobody’s actually come close to factually outing him. The closest I have to a genuine Hollywood source said Cruise is just a bit odd, but Travolta is obviously gay. Who knows.
But yeah, Cruise fucking rules. Joey Potter will regret this day.

How can you forget Rock Hudson? Not only the true first leading man to ‘come out’ but the first to announce he has AIDS to the General Public!
Now of course there were lots of Gay Actors who never came out publicly i.e. Randolph Scott and others back in the day.
For me I don’t really care if Cruise is Gay or not. I go to his movies because generally his films deliver a good time in the theater, are well made by major directors.
Though ‘Rock of Ages’ is bombing, it has been agreed by most that Cruise’s parts are pretty damn great and right on. IMHO they should have made the Stacee Jaxx story instead. I’d see Cruise and Giamatti again they were great in a really bad flick.
Didn’t Hudson come out after his career was effectively over? In any case, of course Cruise can’t come out–his career as a leading man would be over. Middle America might not love him, but they’ll still see stuff like MI:4 and presumably those Jack Reacher films he’s doing–which they won’t if he comes out. And why should he live out of the closet if he doesn’t want to?
It’s long been rumored that Suri is not Tom’s biological child and that Katie was pregnant when they got married. So it may, indeed, get ugly if paternity is an issue.
Interesting factoid from MSNBC: Rogers, Kidman and Holmes were all 33 when they filed for divorce. That can’t be a coincidence.
