  3. Jeez. The Nick Pietro version of the tune was used to great effect over the opening credits of “Basterds.”

    I had not had high hopes for the film, based on the trailers, but the theme, combined with the simple white-on-black titles, was the first indication it was a modern classic.

  4. Actually, Jeff, when you click on the track to play it, Windows Media Center identifies the composer and the source. No internet needed.

    Jazz pianist Hampton Hawes’ recording of the tune, which he made after getting out of the pen on a Presidential pardon in 1963, years after seeing “The Alamo,” and liking the tune, and resolving to record it if he got the chance, is pretty good too.

    Shameful admission: until recently, I didn’t know that Bobby McFerrin sang “Don’t Worry Be Happy.” The Internet seems to be convinced it was Bob Marley.
