Game Changer
Within the last week I have, in a certain way, crossed over. I’ve resisted digital downloads on my ’50″ monitor (not sharp enough, too VHS-y) and I’ve never considered watching films on anything smaller. But I’m now down with watching Netflix and Amazon Prime films on my recently bought iPad 3. Their apps allow for easy choosing and watching without any bothersome bullshit and the iPad3 resolution is excellent.
I still prefer watching Blurays or recently mastered DVDs on the 50″, but iPad viewings with my Skull Aviator headphones are, I now feel, acceptable.
Personally, I enjoy meals at McDonald’s, as well as a nice Coca-Cola. Where’s my check?
For me watching a movie from a smaller (iPad/Macbook) high resolution screen from a close distance is equal to that of watching a movie from a distance on a big high definition TV.
I remember a discussion a year or so ago talking about how watching television and films on the iPad is an entirely new experience. It’s, of course, not as great an option as watching, as Wells says, a Blu-ray on a big screen, but because you hold the device like a book, can prop it up on your chest or some other lounging position, it’s a kind of very focused and personal experience. Your brain connects and reshapes the viewing experience based on the familiar form factor.
(In this regard, it helps that Apple chose a more book-like aspect ratio for the iPad. My initial thought was, shit, the absence of 16×9 was a design mistake. But it turned out to be a very user-friendly compromise, and I do love the feeling of, say, “reading” an episode of The Twilight Zone.)
All anyone has to do is watch the opening few minutes of Midnight in Paris at 1080p on an ipad: Darius Khondji’s photography set to the melancholy Si Tu Vois Ma Mere… my game was changed thereafter.
Have you even tried streaming on your larger set? I rarely, if ever, get less than 720p when Im watching Netflix. Hardly “VHS quality”…
If Netflix had their entire catalog available to stream… I’d be in.

Who said anything about “virtually free”?! They’d have to raise their rates. And I, for one, would gladly pay to have that convenience. But not if they can’t improve their selection of streamed films.
It’s hardly a fantasy either. They’re heading in the direction of everything being available to stream – that’s why the whole qwikster debacle went down in the first place… because at this point they don’t give a crap about their disc rental business model. It’s just a matter of making it work logistically in terms of acquiring all the rights at a cost that still affords a profit.
If you look at where they were just 5-6 years ago in terms of streaming (back before they charged anything for it and just included it for free with the basic rental plan because it was just hundreds upon hundreds of the shittiest movies imaginable) – they’ve come a long way. I think the rate at which the selection has increased has almost seemed to flatline the last 12 months, but for a while there they were growing it exponentially.
I watched four full seasons of “Breaking Bad” on Netflix streaming via the AppleTV box and it was definitely better than DVD-quality. Not Bluray 1080p-level, but a step above DVD for sure. Was very impressed. (and this was on a 60″ LCD).
I watched Lost on Netflix streaming through a Toshiba Bluray player and it looks great.
Or you guys could just see all the movies in a theater or wait for HBO, and set a VCR for your stories.

Get an $80 Roku 1080p box on your 50-incher and sit back and enjoy properly.
Watching anything longer than the occasional 22 minute sitcom ep on a tablet is for the birds.
