A tech-savvy guy confides that “delicate bits of dirt” have been added to the 4K version of The Master — to the digital intermediate, I mean — in order to give the digital versions the look of film. Is that serious madman stuff or what? Paul Thomas Anderson didn’t want it to look too digitized so he gunked it up a wee little bit. This is from a knowledgable guy who knows knowledgable guys. I hope it turns out to be true.

    If it is true, it reminds me a bit of how Orson Welles dirtied and scratched up the “News on the March” film strips in Citizen Kane in order to make them look more like old newsreel footage.

  2. Jermaine Dupri, the producer of Kriss Kross’ “Totally Krossed Out” (1992), added a recording of bacon frying into the mix.

  3. Pseudo “film grain” is often added in post to native digital media, especially when inter-cut with film (ie, scanned from a negative), so those digital shots look more like film and are consistent in the cut. Though this sounds like an additional step of adding dirt “hits.” It’s a little unclear.

  4. I think any grain or noise addition would be more about simulating the warm effect of a film projector in a theater. Sometimes a DCP just feels like watching a big HDTV. That’s probably what he wants to avoid.

  5. That’s silly. The 70mm print that played at the Toronto International Film Festival was as bright and clear as a digital presentation (aside from the fact it had a “film-esque” quality). The print didn’t have any noticeable “delicate” dirt, and even the reel changes were relatively smooth, with no cigarette burns for the projectionist.

    Tell me, what’s the point of this supposed tweaking of the digital version? Are they going to add faux splices too?

  6. Joaquin Phoenix is so good, so completely wrapped up in his character, you just want to pinch off a piece of him and put it on your shoulder and dare somebody to knock it off.

  7. The excellent Battlestar Galactica remake also artificially-upgrained its digitally-shot footage, in order to more accurately reproduce a handheld, documentary-style feel for the series.

    On the Blu-Rays, there’s even a disclaimer to this effect when you load them up, for the people dismayed by the graininess of the footage, and who are unaware of this post-production choice. It’s not a mosquito-snowstorm or anything, but it’s tasteful and quite effective.
