  1. Great book, even better movie. Killer soundtracks (I have playlists for the music from the book and from the movie). Shame it’s become a snapshot of a pretty much now-dead era.

  2. As a person who has been collecting vinyl for over 40 years (20,000 and counting) this movie nailed these type of stores, which by the way are still just about everywhere. The biggest laugh in this scene is that Lewis is holding a copy of Herb Alpert’s Whipped Cream and other delights, the single most ubiquitous album cover in vinyl history. One is guaranteed to find at least one copy in every pile of records at every Goodwill, Salvation Army, thrift store, yard sale etc. That Herb Albert must be one rich fucker.

  3. My attempt at musical snobbiness; in no particular order [mistake for this thread] here are: slept on butters, oldies but goodies, can’t do without songs… A handful for starters:

    Cesare Dell’ Anna – Metromiles
Herbie Hancock – I Thought It Was You
Leeroy Hutson – Love the Feeling
Narada Michael Walden – The Dance of Life
    Human League – Love Action
Marcelli Giordano – Shogun (Serge Santiago rmx)
    Sub Society – Society’s Dropout
    Slayer – Free Money (cover)
Frank Black – I Heard Ramona Sing
John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers – Hideaway
Main Source – Live at the Barbecue
Big Daddy Kane – Show & Prove
Sam Cooke – A Change is Gonna Come
Miles Davis – He Loved Him Madly
Chocolate Watch Band – Loose Lip Sync
    &…
Anything from when the funk was rugged back in the 70s/early 80s, but especially the 70s.

[I haven't listened to much music post about 2004, so I'll be the first to admit I'm already an embarrassment. But fuck it.]

  4. I really doubt Herb Albert is all that loaded. How much do sportscasters get paid doing play by play for the Knicks?

God you’re an idiot. Alpert is the A in A&M Records. The only reason he wouldn’t have a shitload of money is if he squandered it all away.

  5. Dan, Thom is an idiot but not for that reason. that’s just his schtick. and one of the 20 or 30 things HE regulars just put up with.

  6. Top 5 songs from film soundtracks:

    1) HEAT / Joy Division – New Dawn Fades (Moby rmx)
    2) MALCOLM X / Sam Cooke – A Change is Gonna Come*
    3) DRIVE / College – Real Hero
    4) JACKIE BROWN / The Delfonics – Didn’t I Blow Your Mind This Time
    5) FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR / The Beach Boys – I Get Around

Only one is played in scene that takes place outside of a vehicle.

    * sorry for doubling up on this—it’s a gliding song though, can’t get enough.

  7. Bleccchhh. Out of all niche demographics, film snobs really do have some of the most pedestrian, milquetoast taste in music.
