I’m confused by the discrepancy you see between the two Whedons, Jeff. I don’t recall anyone in Cabin in the Woods stumping for the Republican Party, or any of the Avengers stopping to take shower for more than five minutes, so why such an ax to grind against Joss? CitW and Avengers might not be in genres that excite you, but even you admitted both are very well crafted and cleverly plotted movies. Why would you have a hard time reconciling the maker of above average genre fare and the guy that made this pretty cute Obama endorsement?
I’m being totally sincere, I really want to know why you’re so antagonistic and dismissive to this guy. The Spielberg thing I get, the aspect ratio crusades make a certain sense, but why such baseless hostility to one of my favorite storytellers?

I think its time to end the war on Whedon. He did excellent work as a creator showrunner on Buffy/Angel, fanboys love Firefly, Avengers was the third highest grossing movie of all-time and while it plays hollow on the second watch, dude was dealing with the Marvel conglomerate. He made and funded a no budget Shakes production in his Avengers downtime, used to hold Shakes readings at his house with the Buffy cast and co-wrote the severely underrated Cabin in the Woods which is the single best deconstruction of the horror genre to date.
His visuals are improving every movie and the tracking shot in the Avengers was outstanding as was a lot of dialogue.
Whedon has his virtues and his flaws, but if you think his political intelligence and writing/directing skills aren’t cut from from the same cloth you really just haven’t watched enough of his stuff. Still, I’m charmed to see Jeff rationalizing his (grudging) respect for him.
I always thought that Joss Whedon was J.J. Abrams and vice versa. They’re really the same person, aren’t they?
