Man With One Arm

I haven’t posted this clip from Robert Altman‘s California Split since February 2009. This is the single best scene from that under-appreciated film. I’m trying to think of any comic routine from any 2012 film that has a vibe that’s even close to this. I’ve watched it many times and have never failed to at least break out in a big grin. Which makes it more than just just “funny.” Obviously George Segal‘s laugh is what sells it.

  1. Huh?

The one-armed piccolo player routine has nothing whatsoever to do with Dax Shepard‘s Hit & Run…nothing at all. Idiocy.

In addition to my justified praise [http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/2012/08/hit_and_run.php] for portions of that film, I also said:

“But Dax Shepard, who also co-directed (with David Palmer) and produced, must also accept blame for the generic car-chase elements and all the super-crazy-ass, muscle-car shit…squealing tires, clouds of smoke, “aggghh!”

“It’s been done for decades, this stuff. Steve McQueen and Peter Yates got the ball rolling 44 years ago with a landmark car chase in Bullitt (’68), John Frankenheimer upped the ante in Ronin and Quentin Tarantino added lore with some lively back-country road thrills in Death Proof (’07). But there’s nothing new to put on the table.

“So how could Shepard have created such a genuinely inventive, unusually well-written relationship comedy on one hand, and at the same time an almost dreary Fast and the Furious thing for yokels?”

  2. Thanks for that automated response to my Hit and Run comment, Replicant Wells.

I was more just trying to say that your idea of “funny” doesn’t really jive with most other people’s, but that’s what makes you you, and your site so unique (female orgasms, anybody?) — so, you know, keep on truckin’, brutha.

(And put up a Cloud Atlas thread tomorrow, would’ja? I’m sure lots of people would like to talk about it here, even if you’re going to be stubbornly dismissive about consuming it.)

  3. This movie got me in trouble once. I was talking about the movie and repeating the bit Gould does about the black crows in Dumbo to a friend of mine who was working in a store, and I didn’t know a little black kid was standing behind me. He obviously didn’t get the context, just thought he was listening to a racist guy. I felt really bad.

  4. I watched this for the first time this year, based on your recommendation (popped up on Canada’s netlfix). It was really well done & enjoyable. Thanks!
