  1. Oh that fucking quirky violin backing track…

This is excruciating, I mean fingers-down-the-blackboard bad, for anyone right of center.

    And fully intended, I’d imagine.

  2. You’re joking, right? This is pathetic. As a former lefty, it’s PATHETIC. Pandering, cheap, juvenile, stupid, and desperate. In the last few days before the election the candidates should be making their closing statements, and instead we get a riff on 1970′s Campari ads from Playboy.

    Revealingly lame.

  3. Yea, equating losing your virginity to your first vote is going to go over really well this election cycle.

Romney should pay for these ads in swing states if he wants to win.

  4. That Jeff can’t see any problem with this — that other Lefties actually think this is a GOOD ad — tells you everything you need to know. They can’t distinguish between savvy and desperate. They see something like this and think the “problem” is with their political opponents. They ALWAYS think any problem is with their political opponents. So tiresome.

  5. It’s no surprise that right-leaning fogies don’t get this. Just like you don’t see anything wrong with denying poor women access to contraceptive care, abortion options, and assistance to their children when they’re born. And why you look back at 1959 in aspirational reverence.

This ad wasn’t intended for you bcz, as your comments illustrate, you’re too dense to get it.

  6. Pretty painful. I don’t mean to sound like an asshole here (although I’m sure I will), but maybe Dunham should consider going away for a little while? Just a couple months, I mean. Write another movie script. I think everyone was pretty charmed by her at first (Tiny Furniture was kinda hard to sit through, but I admired her gusto in putting herself “out there” emotionally in perhaps not the most flattering of ways), but I don’t think the current overexposure is doing her any favors — not that it’s entirely her fault.

And yah — this really is ripe for parody, and I hope nobody pulls any punches because it’s “liberal-minded” (or because she’s a woman). Stupid is as stupid does — and this is fucking stupid.

  7. “It should be with a guy with beautiful…[pauses, touching her own skin]”

The implication here seems to be that I should vote for Obama because he’s…prettier? I mean, honestly, what kind of pandering bullshit is this?

  8. “I know what it’s like to pull the Republican lever for the first time, because I used to be a Democrat myself, and I can tell you it only hurts for a minute and then it feels just great.”
    – Ronald Reagan, 1980

  9. It’s just supposed to be a funny ad reminding women to vote. I don’t get the hate, except that, as a non-conventionally attractive woman, Lena Dunham is a sort of lightning rod for male righties.

And the conservative to liberal ratio here is surprisingly high for a left-leaning site. is it because it attracts a mostly older crowd? I get the feeling people like Travis Crabtree and Duluoz Gray are all pushing sixty, or well over it.

  10. Cheesy ad. Only offensive in the sense that dopey political campaigns are offensive but Kaned’s right about her overexposure.

  11. Hope you’re not lumping me in with those two geniuses, Jeffmc2000. I am not voting for Romney (may not vote for Obama). Calling Dunham unconventionally attractive is like calling a rectangle unconventionally circular. Haven’t watched anything she’s acted in so I’m not judging her talent. She’s just tough to look in the eye. All this ad needs is a fisheye lens and I’m creeped for the weekend.

The cutesy music, as noted by … in comment #1, isn’t helping much either.

  12. Otto: It’s no surprise that right-leaning fogies don’t get this. Just like you don’t see anything wrong with denying poor women access to contraceptive care, abortion options, and assistance to their children when they’re born.

This is head-slappingly stupid. Keep weaving up those strawmen, moron. If you ever take off your liberal feed bag long enough to draw a breath, you might find out that “righties” are not what you think they are.

But truth is tough. Bigotry is easy.

  13. And I agree with the others who pointed out how disgusting Dunham is. That shitty arm tat ain’t helping things either. She is representative of everything wrong with Gen Y assholes.

  14. Hey, what do you guys think Rashad looks like? I bet the chicks can’t get enough. Amirite, bro? Huh!? AMIRITE?

You should post a link to your picture, Rashad. I’m just dying to see what you look like.

  15. Jesus FUCKING Christ, Jeffmc2000, you went and made Thunder Redux angry and Thunder Redux is suuuuuuuuuuuper scaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaary when he’s angry. That’s why he goes by the name Thunder Redux: because he’s sooooooo manly and scary, unlike all you PUSSY leftist twats.

Now, apologize to Thunder. You’ve upset him. And it’s really difficult for him to re-write and re-blog other people’s work when he’s upset. You think coming up with original ideas is tough? Ha, that’s what the lib media wants you to think. The REAL HARD and MANLY work is rewriting and reblogging.

So apologize to Thunder Redux so he can get back to rewriting someone else’s script.

  16. Seems as though I hit a little too close to home, Harry. But if you don’t get that the women’s issues i raised are…

Oh never mind. I can tell by your “truth is tough” slogan – which is completely nonsensical btw – that you are no captain of nuance, or even logic. So I’ll leave you to stew in your paranoid resentment until the next Die Hard movie comes out.

  17. Biased dismissiveness comes easily to “liberals” like you Otto — keep it up if it makes you feel better. But for someone who alleges to have such an interest in women’s issues, you seem to know virtually nothing about them.

  18. The jealousy of phantasmata is strong this evening, very strong. Oh, how he wishes he could get 72,000 minimum for a 3 month rewrite gig. Oh, how he wishes…

  19. If Jeff ever had more than a smattering of regular female readers they must surely be an endangered species at this point.

  20. Well, this is the thing. I can’t think of a more awful, pointless use of a guy’s time than talking about what female celebrities we find unattractive on the internet. Although I shouldn’t be surprised that Lena Dunham brings out the haters, since this is a site that generated dozens of posts arguing whether or not Emily Blunt was attractive.

I mean, sure, these are things we all talk about in private with friends, but is it really the sort of thing you want to put out there in the world for strangers, possibly even I don’t know…women, to read? Also, since we don’t know what any of you look like, it’s unfair to ask people to believe that you could do better than any of the female celebrities you find so heinous.

And to Thunder Redux—is it really that much of a generalization to suggest that conservatives tend to be older, and that liberals tend to be younger? Am I really going out on a limb with that one? And am I also out of line to be curious about why so many conservatives seem to be drawn to a site created by an avowed liberal who seems to genuinely dislike them?

  21. Jeffmc2000, to answer your last question, conservatives LIKE to be challenged in their views, they like the back and forth. Liberals do not, they hate conservatives and hope to never encounter them.

JW is a good writer, politics be damned. And the layout is pleasing. This is one of the only movie sites I go to, and I like it that way. I like his take on things, and I like mixing it up.

But I understand why this is so confusing to Liberals. As I already said, Liberals hate having their views challenged in any way.

  22. Duluoz, whilst it wasn’t addressed directly at you (although definitely at your ilk), I’d be interested to see you respond to Jeffmc2000′s first point. Why is it you feel the need to describe women as ‘disgusting’ with relative regularity?

  23. So basically, conservatives like to fight and liberals like it when everything’s cool. I can’t say that information really rocks my worldview.

  24. So basically, conservatives like to fight and liberals like it when everything’s cool. I can’t say that information really rocks my worldview.

  25. Evil conservative here – this ad doesn’t offend me, it just hits me as foolish and juvenile and tasteless, but if that’s how obama wants to be perceived, fine with me.

  26. Jesus! Aren’t this talentless heifer’s 15 minutes up yet? Anything for attention! Dumbass –er, Dunham needs to retire already. Nobody will miss her.
