Bring Back The Pup
You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone, and it suddenly hit me today, sitting in a swanky Hanoi hotel, that I really miss Tail of the Pup. The iconic hot dog stand disappeared almost exactly seven years ago. I might gone there three or four times at most (due to the health factor) but I loved that that vaguely gross architecture and the fact that it was sitting on San Vicente near Beverly for so many years (after being moved from its original location on La Cienega and Beverly).
The kids and I laughingly agreed in the mid ’90s that Tail of the Pup’s representation of a mustard-lathered dog on a bun looked (I’m sorry) like a bowel movement in progress.

Now here’s a thread that will start low and only work its way down from there.
i’ve never understood how LA can not only be so fixated on the low cuisine of the hot dog while at the same time getting it so wrong. is there no place at all in this city that boils them properly like a NYC street cart? Pink’s style is an abomination and seems to be the norm here
BODY DOUBLE POWER
The top photo looks like 2 balls and a clap-infested chode turned on their side.
Hell, I miss those Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pies, myself. But there’s always Weiner Schnitzel. You don’t have to make a reservation for it like at Pink’s.
Man, I lived in LA for eleven years…and never even *heard* of this palce. (Love that Sigourney pic, too.)
as someone who grew up in l.a. and spent the ’70s working in a few of the bigger clubs, i can promise you that tail-of-the-pup was strictly for bougie plebes and pink’s was only if you couldn’t get to big wienie or oki-dog…
pup really was bottom of the barrel….
I just about had a heart attack the first time I drove by Oki-Dog about four or five years ago and saw its C health rating had been upgraded to a B. Darby Crash would have killed himself if he were still alive.
I don’t get people’s hate of Pinks. They are damn tasty dogs (or at least I love the Nacho Cheese Chili Dog), you can get some real cane sugar Bubble Up to wash it down with, and 3/4 of the fun of going to Pinks is waiting on line and listening to all the various snippets of conversation.
Tail o’ the Pup, however, really was rock bottom. Only ate there once, for good reason. Still, I miss seeing it every time I head down San Vicente.
the original oki-dog on santa monica has little to do with its current incarnation…
