I love that Rope of Silicon‘s Brad Brevet had the gall…the absolute nerve!…to predict the five likeliest Best Director finalists 9 1/2 months from now. I kind of agree with his picks. We’re all assuming that one outlier, somebody nobody’s eyeballing right now, will step into the arena sometime between October and Christmas, but these five will do for now.

Yeah, I can roll with all 5 but christ, lists like these remind me of how few prestige projects are helmed by chicks. And I’m not saying the Oscars are responsible for bogus tokenism but rather from the ground floor, we need more women directing major pics. USC’s film school says 40 percent of their students are female. They can’t all be studying costume design so what the fuck?

It’s not getting within a million miles of any Oscars, but I love the look of Sofia Coppola’s Bling Ring (that sounds bad when I put it like that, but I stand by it).

i am totally mystified by how thia got made…it’s already been done by lifetime (pretty well, actually, and under the same title)…it just seems kind of strange….

I’ve mentioned my love for the source material before… if (admittedly it’s a big “if”) Susanne Bier can replicate the slowly-ratcheting dread/foreboding of the plot and the unashamedly naked and cold ambition of the title role, ‘Serena’ could be something special.

What, no love for Harmony Korine? Spring Breakers is a lock for best pic.

Reading Jesse’s comment makes me realize that were Kim Pierce to get a nod for CARRIE (yeah, I know), I’d openly celebrate.

  • Mark74

    No Paul Greengrass?

  • Ray Quick

Absolutely no idea who the two right-most people are, and since I don’t know anything about ROPES OF SILICON I damn sure ain’t clicking on a link for it. Who are they?

      Geek movie site.

Well, you could say that any movie site is for “geeks”. The Brad & Laremy podcast is pretty good (and shows they aren’t geeks) though it could do with some editing as 90 minutes is too long.

    Ask Ben Affleck about predictions.

It’s the most obvious list possible, and one that is only going to prove to be 40% correct. The trick would have been to think outside the box and pull out something like a Tom Hooper for The King’s Speech, which absolutely no one saw coming in March 2010. Which is also why lists like this are absolute bullshit.

  • MisterQuigley

Why does Jeff repeatedly link to blogs better than his? Talk about hilarious…

  • Bob Hightower

This shows the depth of Jeff’s Oscar addiction. The last Oscars are just over, but he can’t stop.

  • punkedup

Yes, who will Mickey Rooney vote for to validate the very best?

  • moviewatcher

    Habemus Papam, Jeff.

Time for another anti religion tirade!!!

  • Mark

Someone want to defend Clooney’s front-running presence here? He’s well past the age when most directors peak, and to date has struck out twice (w/ very good scripts) and hit two modest doubles that no one needs to see again.

    • Mark

Also his doubles were just filmed stage plays. Monuments Men will
require a more cinematic style, which is where I reference you to his
      two strikeouts.

  • Noiresque

So, George Clooney, Fred Armesen, Martin Scosese, Tate Donovan and Mark Ruffalo’s weird brother.

Yeah. Brad Brevet must be dreaming.

” In other words, the bulk of the Catholic Church’s current following is among the somewhat less well off and less educated and less hip in the less developed areas of the world — am I reading that right?”

So stupid people = religious people.

Oh, jeff, not every single catholic is Michelle Bachman. You need to go back to the “Isaac and Ishmael” episode of “The West Wing” and see the scene:

    “Islamic fundamentalism is to Islamic
    what
KKK (or the tea party, or creationists) is to Catholicism”

Oh and your demographic/geographic research is wrong. I think you need another trip to wikipedia!

  • http://www.facebook.com/christopherotto Christopher A. Otto

Definitely looking forward to Monuments Men, but I think it’s going to be either (1) too slight, or (2) too Argo for Oscar. The vibe I’m getting from it is “Ocean’s 12 during World War II.” It should be a helluva lot of fun, but I’m not sure it cries Oscar Front-Runner. …

I think Coogler is that oddball pick. I think Wells probably fits in somehow since it would be hard to Weinstein to be shut out with that sort of prestige project like August Osage County.
