Keanu Reeves Is 48, Dude

I can stand someone saying “uhhm” once or twice or even three times but if they won’t stop I’ll immediately write them off. It’s the “mmm” sound that tears it. I myself say “uhhhh” or “aahhh” but never, ever fucking “uhhm.” It’s not a huge biggie to most people, I realize, but to me “uhhm”-ers are right up there with people who throw their heads back and howl obnoxiously as they sit with four or five friends in cafes.

The film is Generation Um… (5.28, Phase 4). All actors who were really good looking in their 20s automatically become interesting as hell when they hit their 40s and grow short scraggly beards.

Never mind that you’re splitting a hair that only you can see with the uhmm vs ahhh debate. You have said uhmmm, quite often actually. Just listen to some of your podcasts.

    • MovieSquad

Yes, i attended a film series hosted by Jeff at UCLA several years ago, and I distinctly remember lots of uhmming and murmuring

  • http://www.hollywood-elsewhere.com/ Jeffrey Wells

If I’ve said “uhhm” in the podcasts then I’m in denial about that. And I’m going to re-double my efforts to not say it as much.

    • Raising_Kaned

You also frequently interrupt, wait for your chance to talk, zone out, or even type away (!) while your “guest” is trying to make a point (“oh, I didn’t know you could hear it”).

Granted, all these behaviors were much more prevalent with Sasha, but still…

      Pot. Kettle. Black.

P.S. If the “mmm” sound is such a problem for you then perhaps you should consider stopping using “Mmm-hmm,” as well.

God, I can’t believe I even bothered responding to this (esp. when you’ve posted an almost identical entry to this in what couldn’t have been that long ago).

      • joeybot

But it’s so hard to not be self-involved.

    • Raising_Kaned

Having said all of that, though, you do make a fair point about good-looking young dudes aging interestingly into middle-age.

  • Trimmer

You might want to listen to your Matthew Modine interview as well.

  • bfm

I don’t mind “uhmm” nearly as much as I dislike “like”. It’s right up there with chewing gum for making an individual look stupid.

  • Bob Hightower

Hey, Jeff, this new system is a bit of a mess, because the latest post is no longer at the top. So you have to root through old messages to find new ones. This reduces the readability of the site and its entertainment value. Isn’t there any way to put this in more logical order, as it was before? We don’t have time or probably the inclination to go through all the posts each time we look at a topic. Eventually people may drift away or post less, which would hurt your site.

    • Raising_Kaned

You can customize these settings (to a degree).

Under discussion, if you select “newest”, you’ll get the most recent entries up top.

However, that doesn’t include replies — which are nested — so sometimes if there’s a new comment posted in a discussion it’s not going to be automatically clear what (or where) it was.

It’s just one of those trade-offs with “upgrading” — in certain ways, the old-school way was more straightforward and intuitive.

      • Bob Hightower

Thanks for that info. It is helpful. But it seems that with “nested” replies, you still have to root around to find them, which is a hassle, time-consuming, and offputting. I do like to see what people are saying in response to other people’s posts, but this is awfully confusing. And where do you select “newest”? I don’t see that.

        • http://www.stlcardinalbaseball.com/ Ray DeRousse

There is a dropdown at the top of the comments section labeled “discussion.” When you twirl that down, you’ll see the ability to filter comments by newest, oldest, and by rating.

          • Bob Hightower

Thanks, Ray, that’s very helpful. I wish I could reset this once and forever, though!

          • Max Stephens

I just went to http://www.hollywood-elsewhere.com/2013/03/hilarious-2/ selected Newest, and saw a comment from the post about the pope. Is this a consistent Disqus flaw?

  • PatJim

Considering the nature of this post, I think either total deletion or an update with an apology would be appropriate. What hypocritical horseshit. Even for Wells.

  • Hollis Mulwray

    Group laughter. Laughing at me?

Speaking of aging poorly, here’s a shot of Henry Cavill standing behind Amy Adams who must be playing Ma Kent or some random geriatric he saves from a nursing home.

    • senecafalls

WTF? She looks like a normal 30-something woman. I know it’s rare to see those, but give me a fucking break with this “geriatric” crap.

      • http://twitter.com/Cinesnatch Cinesnatch

I believe Brian was employing irony in the context of a previous post.

        • senecafalls

Well it’s hard to tell sarcasm from seriousness around these parts sometimes.

I mean, you’d think a dude ranting about how he’s ok with “uhh” but flies off the handle at “umm” was sarcastic. But it’s not.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1329069668 Brian Bouton

It was a callback and sarcasm which made it harder to catch.

  • senecafalls

I’ve only listened to one of your podcasts but there were definitely a fair share of “ummmmms” in there.

  • IRRITABLE BOWEL CINEMA

Jeff, I know you set the bar high for a minimum daily post amount…but…uhmm…Hey! You know what bugs the absolute shit outta me? People who cough. Worse than nails on a chalkboard.
