Ten-Toed Sloth

Starting at 2:12 Girls producer-director-writer Lena Dunham explains the emotional and psychological makeup of Adam Driver‘s “Adam” character. He was starting to act this year like a decent and considerate fellow until last Sunday night when he said “get on all fours” to whatsername and then had degrading sex with her…nice. Dunham says Adam is trying to protect himself but I know guys like this. He’s an animal. He’s thisclose to physical violence and perhaps worse.

  • IRRITABLE BOWEL CINEMA

Adam just needs a little Phil Roth in his life. I bet that would change your opinion.

    • Bob Hightower

      Portney uses a baseball glove.

  • DuluozGray

little known fact: Bill O’Reilly re-runs get more viewers than HBO’s Girls.

    • joeybot

Well, there is always that absolute correlation of popularity to quality.

      • DuluozGray

Yet all we hear about is how popular Girls is and how it is a breakout hit, yet it draws less viewers than some dope on a cable news channel.

        • http://www.facebook.com/todd.littleton.71 Todd Littleton

Comedies draws differently than news, you know that right?

        • joeybot

Well, is someone here saying no one watches Bill O’Reilly?

Is Girls a breakout hit? Sort of, in terms of watercooler discussion on the internet, I guess. I mean, Evil Dead revolutionized a generation of filmmakers and such, but Annie at the time made more money that Evil Dead probably STILL has. So which has cultural cachet?

        • MisterQuigley

I hate these fucks with the “all we hear” bullshit. They’re always faux-libertarians with their balls in a knot…

        • hupto

          (aka Cadavra)
You ARE aware that HBO is a pay channel and Fox News is basic cable?
(This is what Dulouz has brought me to: defending GIRLS. Arrgghhh!!)

If FOX news cost ten bucks a month, I think you’d see those numbers change a bit.

    • http://www.facebook.com/todd.littleton.71 Todd Littleton

Well yeah… all the talk of loofahs and Geraldo Rivera’s mustache rides brings in the 50 Shades of Grey audience.

Sounds like someone’s quoting something he read on the Breitbart site.

Do you see a guy like Adam when you look in the mirror?

    • joeybot

      He WISHES.

  • http://www.stlcardinalbaseball.com/ Ray DeRousse

This show is getting all of its press because it details the lives of vapid, well-connected rich kids on the coasts. Nobody is watching this or talking about this in flyover country. So I guess that’s a positive thing for people being raised in flyover country.

    • Joshsleeps

I’m in my 20s and I live in Tulsa, the heart of flyover country. I’ll politely correct your misconception and tell you that Girls is a recurring topic of conversation among all of my friends, guys and girls alike. My relatively conservative mother is also an avid fan. My sister, a single mother with her shit together, is also a fan. The reason the press is talking about the show is because, for someone so young, Dunham is a damn good writer who’s holding a mirror up to my generation. A lot of us are shitheads. A lot us recognize the shitheads around us and in ourselves when we watch the show.

      • joeybot

Yeah, I kind of love how everyone in “flyover country” is generally looked at as salt of the earth, down home types…or rubes. Like, they’re all exactly the same, they like the same shit!

        • Joshsleeps

I know. The ignorance is breathtaking.

      • http://www.stlcardinalbaseball.com/ Ray DeRousse

I live in Missouri. Nobody is talking about this show AT ALL here.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jeff-Mclachlan/747758431 Jeff Mclachlan

Nobody in this show is rich.

      • http://www.stlcardinalbaseball.com/ Ray DeRousse

Dunham and her friends are all kids of wealthy and well-connected artistic parents. The fact that her show features kids living lives like that while supposedly not rich shows how out of touch she actually is with her own generation.

  • Jeffrey Wells

No, I see someone more circumspect, and more amused by (as well as lamenting of) my shortcomings and far less governed by brute animal lists.

  • Jeffrey Wells

    Lusts

    • http://twitter.com/Glenn__Kenny Glenn Kenny

“Lists” is actually better. Also, at least Adam has the courtesy to remember the girl’s name.

      • Bob Hightower

How could Jeff remember her name if he never saw her face?

  • http://twitter.com/carlosybarra2 carlos ybarra

When you don’t know how to resolve a scene, add sex. It never fails. Lena Dunham is an overrated hack and Girls last episode is Evidence A of this affirmation.

    • buck swope

then why the fuck do you watch it?

  • IRRITABLE BOWEL CINEMA

Jeff, this may surprise you, but “get on all fours” is code for “here comes anal.”

    • joeybot

Or it means “let me stick it in your vagina from behind.”

  • http://www.stlcardinalbaseball.com/ Ray DeRousse

A question: In Dunham’s very short media career, how many times have we watched a couple engage in doggy-style sex?

    • joeybot

Way less times than I see it in just one day of watching porn.

  • huh

You know a character she created better than she does? Did I read this correctly?

  • http://twitter.com/jasctt Jason T.

He’s the soul of the show. An incredible actor and perf. They get rid of him, I stop watching. Interesting how the male characters on the show are so much better written than the girls.

    • Eloi Wrath

This. He’s incredible in the role. I hated him at first but he’s become the most essential character. All of the regular men have been superb; far better than the guys they’d wheel out in SATC.

Also funny to see so many think-pieces about whether HBO has “gone too far” by showing a guy jizz on a woman’s tits. Apparently all the horrendously violent deaths on all their other shows are cool with the blue rinse brigade.

      • http://twitter.com/jasctt Jason T.

Yeah, he is a pig in the start of the show but he has really come through. Incredible that guys as “with it” as Wells can’t see the problems. Acting out towards those around you is classic addiction behavior and this was a pretty raw portrayal of it. Like I said, the male characters are MUCH better drawn, written and acted in the show and it’s what is keeping me watching it. Glad it’s not a total vagfest.

        • Bob Hightower

Sorry to hear he is incredible in the role. Some said he does a good job.

        • senecafalls

Yeah, because obviously there’s just too many fucking well-written female characters on television and in entertainment. Phew. Must avoid the vagfest.

  • senecafalls

You know what’s funny about Girls? The only people I know who watch it are middle aged men.

    • http://www.facebook.com/randy.matthews Randy Matthews

Its enormously popular with young twenty-something females and the gays (such as myself).

      • senecafalls

I’m a 26 year old female who works in real estate with a bunch of old men. None of my friends watch it (most of us actually hate it, including myself). The old dudes at work talk about it every week.

        • Joshsleeps

so much to hate about it? I will never understand this. there are so many television programs so much more deserving of hate. Not your cup of tea? Cool. I just don’t get the passionate loathing.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jeff-Mclachlan/747758431 Jeff Mclachlan

That’s the largest demo for every HBO show, simply because men in that bracket have more disposable income than women in their early twenties, and are more likely to spring for pay cable channels.

    • jedgeco

I’m guessing most of the people you know are middle-aged men too, right?

    Let it begin.

I just finished watching the first season and I liked it. Of course I’m a closeted cross-dressing absinthe drinking Lesbian deconstructivist painter/paperboy.

    • Raising_Kaned

You also read way too many books (when you have a list of “best Jewish novels” that exceeds five, you have way too much fucking time on your hands, broseph).

  • Jase

    “I know guys like this.”

    Oh, I’m sure you do.

  • Gil Padilla

Absolutely no interest in this. Looks depressing and sad. And I’m 54.

  • punkedup

This is why most cable TV is so over-rated – the only way to get a response is through shock effects

  • http://www.facebook.com/SumoPop David E Phillips

I tend to agree with Jeff while also thinking it’s an amazing performance. The guy isn’t just off, he is seriously unwell.
