“Where Have I Done Wrong?”

Los Angeles Kubrick-philes will be attending a 3.22 DGA screening of David Spodak‘s Anatomy of a Film, a 125-minute doc that analyzes the “structure, methodology and themes” of Kubrick’s Paths of Glory by way of “scripted narration, production stills, documents, slow motion, freeze frame and image comparison.” It sounds a little dweeby and classroom-y, but it was produced in cooperation with Team Kubrick and POG‘s star-producer Kirk Douglas.

Pic features an introduction from Douglas and interactive commentary from producer James Harris and supporting player Richard Anderson. Spodak says he’s “planning to distribute the documentary to universities, film schools and museums and hoping to create awareness for it and gather feedback from potential users.” The screening is happening under the auspieces of the DGA’s Directors Finder Series.

Soderbergh, pre CHE and near-total misanthropy, said CHINATOWN is a film that teaches good filmmaking. PATHS OF GLORY is another. Bulletproof. A working conscience.

Kirk, in his most recent autobiography, rips Ol’ Misanthropic Stan a new one over “Spartacus.” A shameless credit hog, trying to steal a writing credit from the blacklisted Dalton Trumbo. But he lucked out with him on “Glory,” as fresh and biting as the day it was made.

Is there any proof of this other than the recollections offered by Kirk’s camp against Kubrick’s camp? I’m not saying it didn’t happen. The Kubrick Estate has as much of an image to uphold as Kirk. From what’s out there, it goes back and forth — Kirk needed triage on the project and Kubrick was happy to direct on a bigger scale, but was extremely dissatisfied with the historical inaccuracies. Because he wasn’t producing, he couldn’t get his revisions incorporated into the work, and thus a lifelong feud was born between once good chums.

The thing that’s distinct about Kirk saying that was that it was the first time it had come out. I asked him about it, don’t recall if he offered any substantial documentation. Revenge for all the Kubrick and Kubrickians spin over the decades? Maybe. If you’ve ever seen Kubrick directing (that documentary that had him flipping out at Shelly Duvall), he was plainly a lot rougher around the edges than the image he cultivated. Look up Vincent D’Onofrio’s “I am Spartacus” story from Full Metal Jacket. Kind of a nightmare to work with.

I actually didn’t think his annoyance at Shelley Duvall was that big a deal. She kept wasting everyone’s time by missing her cue because she was fiddling with her nose, and the crew kept having to set the outdoor shot up time and time again.

However, I do pity poor Vinnie D.

Could you recount the story? I got nada with search engines.
