I disagree with Dana Stevens more than most critics but she’s certainly clever.

She’s a thoughtful writer, but occasionally and obliviously brings body image and class issues into her reviews just enough that I find her distasteful (yes, I’m well aware of the irony writing this as I post on HE).

I’m surprised you didn’t write it. The reviews of this movie have been lazier than usual. Most of the ones I’ve read use some variation of it.
Yes, the movie invites it by consciously referencing the MGM film. But you’d think more critics would come up with something more original than: “It’s not as good as the Wizard of Oz.” No fooling? Not as good as a universally-beloved film that’s long since risen above the realm of cinema to become a cultural touchstone? Fancy that.

It’s interesting that with all the comparisons and disparagement this film is garnering, hardly anyone brings up the wonderful and dark “Return to OZ.” It almost seems like this film never existed.
I’m baffled that this could be a hit, but if the film encourages the target audience to read actual literature, and not just YA/official erotic fanfic tripe, then good for it.

I’m still baffled over why this film could be a hit, but if it encourages the target audience to read actual literature, and not this godawful Young Adult crap, then at least that’ll be a boon.
