Guaranteed Swan-Song Oscar Nom for Nicholson’s Performance in Toni Erdmann Remake

Variety‘s Justin Kroll is reporting that Jack Nicholson, whom everyone had assumed had more or less retired from acting, will star in a U.S. remake of the Oscar-nominated Toni Erdmann for Paramount.

Sources have told Kroll that that Nicholson “was a huge fan of the original and approached Paramount’s Brad Grey with the idea, and Grey immediately worked with the team at Paramount to secure the rights.”

With Nicholson about to turn 80 on 4.22 and especially given his absence from movies since 2010’s How Do You Know, his Erdmann return will be widely processed as a swan song of sorts and is therefore guaranteed to be Best Actor nominated.

You know going in that Jack will hit a homer with this role, and even if he only manages a ground-rule double he’ll be nominated anyway as a career tribute gesture.

Kristen Wiig will play Edrmann’s uptight business executive daughter. No director has been hired or at least announced.

Adam McKay will produce along with Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbuam of Gloria Sanchez Productions. Maren Ade, writer and director of the original Toni Erdmann, will exec produce along with producers Jonas Dornbach and Janine Jackowski.

Word around the campfire was that Nicholson had quit acting because he was having trouble remembering lines. I never believed that excuse as any actor with that problem could have easily been cued with an all-but-invisible earpiece. It’s good that he’s back, in any event.

I haven’t seen Erdmann, the premise sounds super obnoxious but I’ll take everyone word that it’s great, but lazy and unimaginative Hollywood is at it again, the film isn’t eight weeks old and they’re remaking it.

Are these accountants and theme park managers really that incapable of hiring a good director and writer for an original project?

  • John Cope

Wish his swan song had been Gittes vs. Gittes.

    • Lou Rawls’ Ego

      Is there a script?

      • John Cope

No, I don’t think Towne ever actually wrote one.

        • Jack South P.I.

If he ever did, even if it were just for publication, I would pay $100+ to read it.

        • Lou Rawls’ Ego

          Well he should…pronto!

    • Jack South P.I.

Yes yes a thousand times yes.

  • JoeS

Any bets on how many minutes less than TONI ERDMANN’s 162 minutes will the retread be?

I’ll start. It’ll be 130 minutes. 32 less than the original.

    • Terry McCarty

      Guessing 145 minutes.

      • Frasier Crane

        Is Apatow directing?

    • SJR

However long Jean-Marc Vallée like his movies to run.

      • JoeS

As much as I’ve liked some of Vallee’s work, he doesn’t have that kind of power over studio thinking (not to mention Nicholson’s).

    • hupto

Well, they’ll dump the whole nude party for starters, so that’s 15 minutes right there. The guy jerking off onto the cupcake? Gone. Her singing Whitney in a stranger’s apartment? Gone. Bear suit chase scene? Gone. Equivocal ending? Gone. By the time they finish cutting everything outrageous that made the film so scintillating in the first place, it’ll barely run 90 minutes.

      • JoeS

Sadly, I had the same thought. Not quite as drastic (they will keep at least part of the nude scene). But, we all know about cases where the ‘powers that be’ have failed to see the humor or necessity of critical scenes in films and out comes the chop chop chop. I don’t see TONI II going down to 90 minutes, but I can certainly envision bigwigs demanding it be under 120 for certain.

      • Grampappy Amos

you know it hasn’t played here yet. I wish I could unread that

        • hupto

I’m not a spoiler person, sir. None of what I listed would rank as a surprise, and in fact most of it was commented on in reviews. You will still enjoy the movie, trust me.

          • Grampappy Amos

No offense meant and I’m still planning on going to it, if it ever plays in the Raleigh/Durham area

  • m_00_m

Any way we can get Gene Hackman out of retirement to play Erdmann’s gardener or something? Any role to keep his last role from being “Welcome to Mooseport”??

    • Clockwork Taxi

If Alexander Payne couldn’t convince him with Nebraska, ,it ain’t happening.

      • Professor Wagstaff

I bet Nebraska paid next to nothing, and Hackman has long made acting choices based on money over material. That’s been discussed as why he hated working on The Royal Tenenbaums.

    • JoeS

Sadly, with Hackman, it appears to be a health issue. I’ve been on sets with elderly actors. I can sometimes not be very pretty. Let Mr. Hackman enjoy his remaining years.

      • Clockwork Taxi

That’s sad to hear. Last I heard he was smacking around homeless guys who insulted his wife.

        • JoeS

It is a shame. For a while there, Hackman was my very favorite actor. So versatile.

        • cyanic

Which for some reason read endearing to me.

      • Professor Wagstaff

Maybe if he can have another opportunity to berate Wes Anderson he’ll change his mind.

      • Matt of Sleaford

I was watching Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives a couple weeks ago, and they just happened to be profiling a diner in Santa Fe that Hackman frequents. It did appear to be a complete coincidence. Hackman looked distinctly uncomfortable at being in the piece, but he was still a good sport.

        • Frasier Crane

          The news from 2008.

  • Eric

Nicholson and Wiig would be a delight to watch so long as Nicholson is healthy. I haven’t seen him even in an interview or award show for years it feels like.

    • The above Lakers video was shot in 2015.

      • Eric

Well, the video proves that the man can still drink and gawk at every female that walks by.

        • Grampappy Amos

where the hell is my video?

  • Professor Wagstaff

Wiig’s a boring, obvious pick. Get someone like Michelle Williams.

    • KD

      Hell, even Greta Gerwig…

    • cyanic

      Jessica Chastain.

      • hupto

        Yes!

        • Savage Brit

Wiig makes me think of Nicholson and “Anger Management.”

      • Pertwillaby

        Yikes!

    • JoeS

      JoeFoolery says:

Are we allowed to let ourselves speculate over who we’d like to see do the full frontal nude party scene enter into our suggestions?

I vote Chastain based on the early speculation.

P.S. Of course, being a Hollywood production, it is likely to be much more demure.

  • BobCashill

“You know going in that Jack will hit a homer with this role, and even if he only manages a ground-rule double he’ll be nominated anyway as a career tribute gesture.” The same was said about Rules Don’t Apply.

    • Jeff

Nicholson is a god actor compared to Beatty who was always a better producer and tastemaker than actual performer.

  • Jeff

Wiig is mediocre at best, really big miss there. There are dozens fault great actresses in that range, I can already guarantee how she plays every beat. Nothing would make me happier Oscar wise than Nicholson winning a fourth and breaking a tie with Denzel and DDL.

    • Dr. New Jersey

Nicholson is great, but that Oscar for As Good As It Gets should have gone to Robert Duvall for The Apostle.

      • Jeff

Sure but he deserved at least another one for Chinatown or About Schmidt. So it all evens out.

        • Franny P

Ironweed, Prizzi Honor, A Few Good Men, Five Easy Pieces, Easy Rider to name several more where he got robbed, not to mentioned several roles where he did not get a nomination, Carnal Knowledge, King of Marvin Garden, Shining, Batman, Hoffa.
Welcome back Jack I missed you big time.

    • AnnaZed

… There are dozens fault great actresses in that range …

      What does that even mean?

  • MillstreamPigworker

Really, we’re already supposed to give a shit about the fucking 2019 Oscars? Maybe stop caring so much about trophies, it’s very Trumpy. Oh wait…

  • Reverent and free

Glad to hear. I was dreading that he’d exit like Brando.

  • AnnaZed

Isn’t this a land speed record for scarfing up a foreign property and regurgitating it Hollywood-style?

    • Matt of Sleaford

I don’t remember which film it was – maybe Infernal Affairs or The Ring – but I know I’ve read of Hollywood remakes going into production before the original film is even released.

  • nodirectionhome

Ive not seen Erdman but after reading the premise and the team behind it, the production could go two ways. Lets just hope McKay pushes more towards Big Short than say Daddy’s Home.

  • Matt of Sleaford

It must be great to read every piece of entertainment news through the prism of its Oscar prospects. Saves time.

“Casey Affleck In Coma After Freeway Crash”

Looks like he has Best Actor in the bag now. Lucky guy….

  • Ron Burgundy

Wiig is awful. Someone explain her ability to get work. Watch The Martian, for goodness sake. What the heck kind of performance was that?
