Ready To Inject Fresh 2017 Serum, But There’s Not Much Happening Until 3.10

The 2017 Sundance and Santa Barbara film festivals are history, the Spirits and the Oscars are less than two weeks away and all but concluded in the minds of most, and I for one am ready to jump into the 2017 batting cage and start swinging. But not until the next three weekends are past us. Okay, one or two might pass muster. This Friday’s (2.17) top openers are Gore Verbinski‘s A Cure For Wellness (already dismissed as a shortfaller) and Zhang Yimou‘s The Great Wall (Chinese monster epic, Matt Damon)…nothing. The 2.24 toppers are Eran Creevy‘s Collide (blah) and Jordan Peele‘s Get Out….wait, this might be something. The three big openers on 2.28 are Ry Russo Young‘s Before I Fall, James Mangold‘s Logan (might be decent) and Stuart Hazeldine‘s The Shack (faith movie with HE’s own Octavia Spencer as God). As far as I’m concerned the first two rip-snorters are opening on 3.10 — Jordan Vogt-RobertsKong: Skull Island and Oliver AssayasPersonal Shopper. Don’t listen to the naysayers — anyone who dismisses this film needs to refresh their browser and/or upload new software. Here’s my coverage going back to last May’s Cannes Film Festival.

  • Martin Foyle

Trainspotting 2 is fine, a good companion to the first one. The story just about works, great use of music again. Real star for me was Boyles pacing & editing, it all flows so nicely.

  • Jordan Ruimy

“Get Out” is getting very good reviews. It had a secret screening at Sundance that went very well. So far 16 reviews on RT and all positive.

    • Barney Dunn

saw the midnight screening, was expecting clever humor of Key and Peele, but the first two-thirds of the film were listless and pretty boring, some scenes just went on and on and on and were poorly edited, only thing keeping audience awake were loud scary sound effects. Last third was fun, got some laughs, but the film reminded me of Yoga Hosers in quality.

Did you see the film’s trailer before seeing the film itself? Nothing at all in the trailer would lead one to expect the humor of a Key and Peele skit.

        • York Durden

I saw the trailer. Made the movie look visually amateurish. Maybe it has something to say on the sociological level.

  • How does new Kong get a pass when any other big budget studio tentpole monster movie of this caliber instantly receives the same derision that a Santa Barbara movie audience gets?

    • Matt of Sleaford

It’s set in the 70s and lifts a lot of imagery from Apocalypse Now? Just a guess.

  • Bob Strauss

Get Out is kind of extraordinary.

  • PC Brownshirt Jackboot

“James Mangold‘s Logan (might be decent)”

If it turns out to be decent are you going to email Mangold and ask for some shots of Jackman’s nips?

    • Naaahh.

  • Clockwork Taxi

Even with the reviews being very mixed and leaning toward negative, I am excited to see A Cure for Wellness. I’ want to see what Verbinski can do with a two and a half hour mental hospital movie.

    • Bob Strauss

Surprisingly little. Or maybe not surprising.

    • Aaron B

Agreed. I think even “The Lone Ranger” isn’t without it’s merits. That finale is pretty damn great.

      • Clockwork Taxi

I really think there should be some sort of a club for people who kind of like The Lone Ranger. It’s a mess, but an extremely cinematic one that only a master could pull off.

  • lazarus

A Cure For Wellness got a B+ and some very encouraging words from David Ehrlich on Indiewire, not sure what the word is elsewhere.

    • Jeff

So that means it’s bad right? He’s a talented writer but his taste is brutal.

  • Dr. New Jersey

O/T, but loving Kubo and the Two Strings ads here right now.

    • The “Choose…” meme it uses is slightly less weird than seeing “For Your Consideration” in an ad for peanut butter.

    • Eve

Me too. I loved this movie.

  • Edward

I love Octavia Spencer almost as much as you do, but all I could think when I watched “The Shack’s” trailer was it must be another crapfest from Nicholas Sparks.
I hope Verbinski can get out of Pirates jail with “Cure”. He’s got talent.

Much as we all love Olivia Spencer it is a truth universally acknowledged that all films where a protagonist is described as having his life changed forever by faith are guaranteed to be gag-inducing crap.

*Can we call her Olivia (paycheck) Spencer yet?

      *I jest, I adore her.
