Moises Chiullan writes an ongoing column for Hollywood Elsewhere, which he's been contributing to in various forms since July of 2005. He currently serves as Managing Editor in addition to his capacity as a columnist.

He began his work on this site as one among seven or eight sub-columnists and filed once or twice a week about the moviegoing life in Tallahassee, Florida. He focused on the perspective of many Americans who are outside the reach of indies and arthouse films that only play NY/LA. He has also covered South by Southwest for H-E every year since the inception of this column.

His column went on hiatus a couple of times. The first was for a couple of months in mid-2007 due to a big move that brought him west to Austin, Texas. Then it went offline again late the same summer until early in 2008. In both cases, this was due to the needs of making a 9-to-5-based living. Since returning to the column in 2008, he's focused on the challenges facing theatrical exhibition and the evolution of home viewing. Early in 2009, the site's Discland column was discontinued and Moises vastly expanded his own DVD & Blu-ray coverage.

He was born and raised in north Texas the son of a graduate school professor from Kansas and a Cuban exile. His adult brother is autistic but could still act circles around pompous actors who "go Simple Jack" to increase their chances for awards.

Moises was a member of the first class of Texan 3rd graders force-fed standardized tests instead of curriculum. He attended the same High School as David Koresh (albeit quite a few years later). An unexpectedly generous scholarship sent him out east to Florida State University since he was wait-listed by the University of Texas. He chose one major (Film), then another (Communication), got kicked out of one (Theatre), and finally settled on Anthropology.

Moises contributed to a few different print publications on-campus while a student at FSU. Most (if not all) of them have ceased publishing. He once refused a paycheck on account of an editor re-titling his review of Craig Brewer's Hustle and Flow as "Do the 'Hustle'!".

Now an Austinite by transplant, Chiullan is married to Ashley, a real-life cowgirl, and doesn't see himself leaving the hometown of the original Alamo Drafthouse Cinema any time soon.
